Updated version! Still decent after all this time :)
UPD 4/18/2016: Got Legend in two days climbing from rank 19 after an 8 months break in Hearthstone.
This is the deck I used to climb to rank 4 legend on EU. It's an old tempo mage deck originally created by Shtan with a few changes to adapt to current meta.
4/12/2015 UPDATE: I JUST GOT #1 LEGEND! Took me 8 wins in a row from rank 8!
Stats from rank 190 to 4:
The stats to rank 1 legend: 26-1
Current stats, as I'm playing everyday to keep my position in top 5:
Card explanations:
- Mana Wyrm: Strong 1-manacost minion, good against all kinds of decks. Cannot be replaced.
- Mad Scientist: One of the "perfectly balanced" cards in game. Cannot be replaced.
- Sorcerer's Apprentice: Has a great synergy with cheap spells.
- Unstable Portal: Amazing card. Buffs Mana Wyrm and can be played cheaper with Sorcerer's Apprentice. The chances of getting a decent minion are quite high.
- Flamecannon: Very strong early game removal. Gains huge tempo when played along with Sorcerer's Apprentice on turn 3.
- Frostbolt: No need to explain this card.
- Counterspell: Very good secret against most of the decks that are played in current meta. Worst case scenario when it comes out of Mad Scientist and your opponent still has the coin. It's disappointing but there is nothing you can do about it. Other than that it's okay to burn any opponent's spell.
- Mirror Entity: Amazing secret for any tempo deck, needs to be played out of Mad Scientist or with Kirin Tor Mage for maximum value.
- Kirin Tor Mage: Many people doubt this card but I think it's pretty good to have one, since there are 3 secrets in deck and you will not be getting them out of mad scientists all the time.
- Piloted Shredder: No need to explain, strong 4-manacost minion.
- Kezan Mystic: Insane card, helps sooo much against aggro decks like face hunter or mech mage.
- Fireball: No need to explain, an autoinclude card in any mage deck.
- Loatheb: Great card. Shuts your opponents spells and has good stats - must have.
- Sludge Belcher: No need to explain how good this card is.
- Sylvanas Windrunner: One of the best cards in the game. Can put your opponent in an awkward position, force him to make an unfavourable trade. Cannot be replaced efficiently.
- Dr. Boom: Blizzard fix this one please.
- Ragnaros the Firelord: Can snipe out a big minion or deal 8 damage to the face. Cannot be replaced efficiently.
- Kel'Thuzad: Most of the time you're the one who controls the board so this card can provide an insane value plus its BGH-immune.
If you have any questions about muligans, some match ups or replacements - feel free to ask in the comment section.
I used faceless manipulator though for sylvanas
Hey, quick question about replacing some legs. What can I replace Sylvanas with and Ragnaros? I don't have either, thanks!
no polimorphy ???
I run 1 poly in my version. Its been so much more useful than the kirin tor mage I dropped for it.
Is 1 flamewaker enough ???
I replaced Sylvannas with emp. thaurisan and rag with chromagus. are these changes fine? are there any beter changes?
Loving this deck OMG
playing it at the moment, i´m not laddering much.
but went from 15 to 13 quite easy.
i first goal in laddering is to get past rank 10 :D
Great deck, although cancer paladin still recks me xD
Edit: My latest video climbing to legend with this deck (started the series at rank 20 this is the 7th part around rank 12 and 13). I have updated the deck with the latest changes and give some advice as to how to play it.
Love this deck! Awesome deck for an awesome class. I have had some good success with it. I was almost legend (got to rank 5) before the season reset and I should get to legend this season if I can find the time to play. I am making an educational youtube series for this deck going from rank 20 to legend. I will post one of my videos here in hopes that it will help some people learn to play this deck a little bit better.
im rank 5 with this deck in eu i play mid range when i start playing allot of warlock and play this deck when i dont
What about adding antonidas instead of Ragnaros? It's a lot of spells in this deck
Antonidas with this version just doesn't fit very well. Some people run a tempo mage similar to this deck with 2 flamewakers and cheap spells like arcane explosion and mirror image. In those decks with lots of low cost spells Antonidas often gets to be played. Here though we do not have enough cheap spells to make it work. Antonidas ends up being a 7 mana 5/7 that gets killed before you can get value out of it.
I put Antonidas in my deck. Drop the kezan, kirin tor mage, or sorcerers apprentices. All useless imo.
I disagree. Those cheap spells get used early in those decks anyways.
Sometimes I wait for a frostbolt or secret before dropping Antonidas, but if you have a counterspell up he is usually pretty safe. Or your opponent will waste a bunch of cards getting rid of him and then have nothing to counter the Dr. Boom or Ragnaros you drop the next turn.
This deck is fairly slow and there are no card drawing mechanism in it. Big legendaries like Loatheb, Sylvanas, Ragnaros, Dr. Boom, and Antonidas are essential for the late game.
Nope I find the same result, this deck is bad. You only win if you get lucky portals.
I put more big legendaries in my deck so I have things to cast in the late game
Works pretty well.
This deck is terrible. too many classes destroy us. especially face hunters and there are a lot of them. basically aby deck that rush you down will win, and hand lock will destroy your anus
I think you just suck with this beautiful deck ;)
