Updated version! Still decent after all this time :)
UPD 4/18/2016: Got Legend in two days climbing from rank 19 after an 8 months break in Hearthstone.
This is the deck I used to climb to rank 4 legend on EU. It's an old tempo mage deck originally created by Shtan with a few changes to adapt to current meta.
4/12/2015 UPDATE: I JUST GOT #1 LEGEND! Took me 8 wins in a row from rank 8!
Stats from rank 190 to 4:
The stats to rank 1 legend: 26-1
Current stats, as I'm playing everyday to keep my position in top 5:
Card explanations:
- Mana Wyrm: Strong 1-manacost minion, good against all kinds of decks. Cannot be replaced.
- Mad Scientist: One of the "perfectly balanced" cards in game. Cannot be replaced.
- Sorcerer's Apprentice: Has a great synergy with cheap spells.
- Unstable Portal: Amazing card. Buffs Mana Wyrm and can be played cheaper with Sorcerer's Apprentice. The chances of getting a decent minion are quite high.
- Flamecannon: Very strong early game removal. Gains huge tempo when played along with Sorcerer's Apprentice on turn 3.
- Frostbolt: No need to explain this card.
- Counterspell: Very good secret against most of the decks that are played in current meta. Worst case scenario when it comes out of Mad Scientist and your opponent still has the coin. It's disappointing but there is nothing you can do about it. Other than that it's okay to burn any opponent's spell.
- Mirror Entity: Amazing secret for any tempo deck, needs to be played out of Mad Scientist or with Kirin Tor Mage for maximum value.
- Kirin Tor Mage: Many people doubt this card but I think it's pretty good to have one, since there are 3 secrets in deck and you will not be getting them out of mad scientists all the time.
- Piloted Shredder: No need to explain, strong 4-manacost minion.
- Kezan Mystic: Insane card, helps sooo much against aggro decks like face hunter or mech mage.
- Fireball: No need to explain, an autoinclude card in any mage deck.
- Loatheb: Great card. Shuts your opponents spells and has good stats - must have.
- Sludge Belcher: No need to explain how good this card is.
- Sylvanas Windrunner: One of the best cards in the game. Can put your opponent in an awkward position, force him to make an unfavourable trade. Cannot be replaced efficiently.
- Dr. Boom: Blizzard fix this one please.
- Ragnaros the Firelord: Can snipe out a big minion or deal 8 damage to the face. Cannot be replaced efficiently.
- Kel'Thuzad: Most of the time you're the one who controls the board so this card can provide an insane value plus its BGH-immune.
If you have any questions about muligans, some match ups or replacements - feel free to ask in the comment section.
In the current meta it is difficult with all the aggro, however as long as you play against the opposing decks knowing what cards they're going to drop and watch the patterns you'll be able to start climbing. NO DECK gives you 100% win rates so quite your bitching.
This is solid and only really struggles WITH ANY DECK when you draw crappy replacement cards after a crappy initial draw. . . .
Keep in mind, if you're dropping sorcerer's apprentice unless you have to on turn 2 then you are likely playing this deck wrong most of the time and for god's sakes throw back secrets in your initial draw unless you have kirin combo already ready to pound face.
I know this is tempo but I watched some streams saying that decks in the meta these days are designed so that you can have an otk from say 15 or less health. Zoo is slowly reviving and Grim Patrons are a pain in the ass. is there any way to find place for a flame strike? IMO Kel is decent but it doesn't quite hit the mark. You also have enough creatures and board to stabilize so Kel is pointless. Also, don't you have those times where you run of of hand cards and are top decking. You draw a Kel. 6/8 for 8, great.... Flamestrike is better in the sense where is wipes out your opponent's board. It is 7 mana but i feel that in most case scenarios, you would be happier to top deck a flame strike then a Kel.
Sometimes, i just like to play around and have some ACTUAL fun, not hardcore fun ;) and I put in Ysera. He/She makes games so cool and Ysera Awakens is basically a 5 dmg flame strike for 2 mana.
I like this deck, but I had to stop running it because in my experience it will instantly lose the game if the enemy spams the board. I don't see any board clears going in this deck whatsoever, so as soon as the enemy puts stuff on the board its like... you just concede on the spot. I think it's really great vs opponents who play 1 or 2 threats at a time though. But against Patron Warrior, Muster Pally, Zoo, Mech Mage, Shaman I just got destroyed as soon as they put too much stuff on the board, without any hope of drawing into a board clear.
Exactly that, you lose board control, you lose the game
Did you change anything? Did you hit 1 again?
Like the deck. Doing pretty good with it.
I am curious why no flame strike though? When the board gets filled on the other side I dont have much to counter that.
Have to say that deck is both fun and powerful! Good work, dude!
However, usually I lose the game because I cannot come back when got board clean. Do you think this deck can add some card draw for consistency, like Acolyte of Pain, Arcane Intellect, and Flamestrike as a come back?
Why would you play this card in a tempo mage?
I don't think that's a good idea. Most of the time you don't have that many cards in your hand, so your thaurissan basically does nothing. It is a completely broken card for decks like freeze mage and druid and absolutely useless in a deck like tempo mage.
if you really need a flamestrike try to put it instead of Kel'Thuzad
I have enough dust for a legendary, im thinking about cenarius antonidas or rag. I dont really have a deck to use ragnaros in except maybe druid and this deck. Which one do you think i should craft? I can use antonidas for both mech mage and freeze. The legendaries i currently have are sylvanas, cairne, dr boom, alex, deathwing, bolvar, king krush, and edwin.
Personally, I took out KT to add flamestrike.
Last couple days I did great with this deck, today I've just been getting rekt. :/
Edit: Somehow I replied to the wrong thread. Sorry about that.
Any replacement for Dr Boom? Dont have him :c
I'm sorry but there is no way to replace the most imbalanced card in the game.
I have golden troggzor, do you think its worth to use it to craft boom? (I only use trogg in my current mech mage)
absolutely yes
It is an extremely strong card but only in mech deck. 2 Golems, 2 Shredders and 1 Dr. Boom is simply not enough.
This card just straight up loses to face hunter 90% of the time, even if you get off a good kezan mystic. And struggles hard against Paladin, as there is no answer to Tyrion. And you struggle against zoo unless you get all your early game cards in a great draw.
It's decently strong against warrior, demon / handlock, and rouge, seems about 50/50 with druid. But hunter / zoo and pally are show up just too often.
I climbed to 5, but i've been struggling against the aggro decks (esp hunter). I made some changes dropping kirin tor mage, and one fireball (often use it for removal anyways, prefer to have an answer to tyrion) for flame strike / poly morph. But I think adding a healbot would weaken the other matches so far, should I just consider hunter a lost cause?
I've straight up lost to hunter 100% of the time (about 12 games), even with perfect turn 1 draws . I've tried a few different cards like toss in a sen'jin shieldmaster and...well it doesn't matter, this deck gets wrecked by facehunter and does very well against most other matchups.
This deck doesn't need Emperor of Balance.
