Props to Genocide51 for the idea on this one. Basically the main combo in this deck is to stall the board long enough for you to draw into Emperor Thaurissan, Prophet Velen, 2 Mind Blasts, Velen's Chosen, and a Holy Smite in order to kill the opponent in one turn!
Although the main combo involves killing your opponent in one turn, there are other ways to win. The deck does not solely rely upon one combo to win the game. In fact, I've won most games by dealing about 15 damage to the opponent with the taunts and other minions throughout the game, and then I finish them with a few pieces of the combo.
The Combo: This deck has the ability to deal 30+ damage on turn 10 with the combination of playing Emperor Thaurissan on turn 9 (or whenever you get the combo cards in hand), reducing the cost of all of the cards in your hand by 1 at the end of your turn. Then, on the next turn, you will be able to play Prophet Velen with the buff from Velen's Chosen and burst your opponent to death using 2 Mind Blasts (dealing 12 damage each for 1 mana) and a Holy Smite to do the remaining 6 damage. Because of Emperor Thaurissan, Prophet Velen will be 6 mana, Velen's Chosen will be 2 mana, Holy Smite will be 0 mana, and together the Mind Blasts will cost 2 mana, making a total of 10 mana and 30 damage on turn 10 (assuming there is no other friendly minion on board who already has a Spell Damage +1).
Who need's Ice Block? One health and I won.
This deck has plenty of stall mechanics and plenty of draw, so it is be feasible, just as Freeze Mage is feasible. Good luck against Warriors, but other than that, I see this working. Addressing the inclusion of Alexstrasza, I believe she fits in the deck because, if all else fails, you still have enough burst to kill the opponent with Alexstrasza, Bloodmage Thalnos, Holy Smite, and Mind Blasts. It could also make the Warrior match-up winnable because, unlike Freeze Mage, this Priest will be able to burst 30+ damage, which means a Warrior could have 30 health and 15 armor when you use Alexstrasza, putting the Warrior in killing range. The Freeze Mage doesn't have this much burst so the Warrior's armor ends up saving the Warrior in that match-up and the Warrior wins with ease because the Mage runs out of burn. In the Hunter match-up, the heal from Alexstrasza is often game changing. If you don't have Alexstrasza, the best replacement is probably Ragnaros the Firelord.
Resurrect fits perfectly in this deck because it acts almost as a Duplicate. The RNG can also be controlled so as to always bring back a minion with Taunt. For example, you could play a Deathlord as your first minion on turn 3 or 2 (if you have coin) and resurrect it immediately after it dies. Either way, Resurrect almost can't bring back a bad minion if played later on in the game; it will almost certainly either bring back a minion with Taunt, or a minion that will provide card draw.
Lightbomb is one of the most powerful clears in the game. It is very challenging to replace this card, but if you don't have Lightbombs, I would suggest replacing them with another copy of the Auchenai Soulpriest and Circle of Healing combo to clear the board.
Bloodmage Thalnos is great for the spell damage if you want more value from your Holy Nova, or other clears. It's also a decent minion to play on turn 2 to draw some cards. If you have Resurrect and another taunt in hand, I would hesitate to play Bloodmage Thalnos on turn 2 because you want to resurrect a taunt over a Bloodmage Thalnos. If you don't have it, replace it with a Loothoarder or a Kobold Geomancer, depending if you value the card draw or the spell damage more. I would suggest the Loothoarder, however.
Note: OTK means "one turn kill" for those who did not know.
UPDATE 1.1:
UPDATE 1.1: This deck is viable. I've tested it and face hunter doesn't stand a chance. Here is the counter we've been searching for! Resurrect is strong if you use it correctly.
Update 1.2:
Update 1.2: I've added the Auchenai Soulpriest and Circle of Healing combination to help with match-ups against midrange decks. Auchenai Soulpriest is also a solid 4 drop (something the deck was originally lacking) which can help clear the board with the Priest hero power as well as with Circle of Healing. I'm also considering adding Holy Fires into the deck. If Freeze mage becomes very popular on ladder, Kezan Mystic might have a spot in this deck as well. Thank you for all of the constructive criticism!
Update 1.3:
Update 1.3: I've swapped out 1 Acolyte of Pain and 1 Holy Smite for 2 Annoy-o-Trons to have a stronger early game. The early taunt is important.
you mean since lotus, channel fireball ?
It's funny how tastes vary. I have fond memories of running Prosbloom during the 5th edition rules (1997?), when you didn't die until the end of the phase. You'd go into negative life and then come back out with a massive Drain Life for the win.
Actually, OTK is rarely as big an issue in Magic compared to modern digital CCGs because Magic -get this- allowed you to take actions on your opponent's turn. Which meant that combo decks always had a weakness to something as simple as a key part of the combo being disrupted. If your opponent countered your City of Solitude (the enchantment that PREVENTED counterspells) or you tried to go ahead with your combo without it, then you faced the possibility of being caught with your pants down and having effectively nothing else left to fall back on.
There is no digital CCG that features a "hold it, I want to play something" button you can use to affect the board on your opponent's turn, or even to do something as simple as play a counterspell; even the Hearthstone version of Counterspell has to be set up in advance and since it triggers automatically it can be baited out. This is the single biggest restriction of digital CCGs and the thing that makes OTK decks such a bane in them- if the opponent has their win combo, they win automatically because there is nothing whatsoever you can do to stop them.
And people complain that Face Hunter is non-interactive and mindless...
One major difference is that Hearthstone combo decks go off on turns 8+. The other player still has a chance to race. In Magic it was turn 1.
No, that was just the open "Black Lotus Channelball" decks. That's not really at all the same thing as the "Properity+Cadaverous Bloom+City of Solitude+Drain Life" combo decks and the like. Besides, even in open there was always the chance you could go "Black Lotus, Mountain, Channel, burn 19 life into mana and add the last one from the Lotus, 20-point Fireball" and your opponent just flashes you a grin like the grille of a mack truck, chucks a blue card out, pays 1 life and flops down Force of Will. Or if you weren't going first, just Force Spikes you (the ultimate humiliation).
Somone got a refined version? :- )
I swapped out a few cards and it feels a little more consistent but I am still testing it out:
Swapped 1 acolyte for 1xwild pyro since acolyte is sometimes a bit slow especially if it only draws you 1 card. Wild pyro also can accelerate your card draw a lot when combined with northshire + circle, can be used to activate the acolyte and can also be used as a board clear, just feels a lot more versatile.
I swapped out both sludge belchers because this deck does well enough against aggro anyway to not need a 5 mana taunt and I didn't feel it was worth the risk getting the 1/2 slime from resurrect. Instead I included 2x injured blademaster, it feels so good to injured blademaster turn 3 and follow it up with 2 resurrects.
I also swapped out holy nova and deathlord for auchenai and circle. Since I can use a holy nova type effect by using wild pyro. It might be better to swap out a lightbomb instead of a holy nova but I havent tested that yet.
So the following changes I have made are:
-1 Acolyte of Pain
-1 Deathlord
-1 Holy Nova
-2 Sludge Belcher
+1 Circle of Healing
+1 Wild Pyromancer
+2 Injured Blademaster
+1 Auchenai Soulpriest
The lower overall mana cost also means you can dump your hand and cycle faster to look for combo. Thinking of swapping out Alexstrasza also because it feels slow at times and you can't really guarantee a combo kill on the turn you play it. The best you could do is Alexstrasza + thalnos+ coin + 2x mind blast + holy smite = 15 dmg (after a thaurissan turn) but its unlikely you will be able to save the coin for that, and only works if you go second. I havent tested with shadowbomber (alexstrasza+2x mind blast + shadowbomber+holysmite) but I think in most cases shadow bomber will make the deck more inconsistent.
I am currently rank 13 with it but its near the start of the season so I haven't seriously tried to climb to the top yet. I do have a pretty good win rate so far though so looking good.
FYI Velen's chosen on Velen is not necessary for the combo. You can also play a bloodmage or a kobold first, and then play Velen. This means if you don't have Velens in your hand when casting Thaurrisan but topdeck have bloodmage or topdeck it , it's ok.
Prophet Velen substitute card ?
so i'm trying malygos cause i don't have velen
Very strong & super funny deck! Ty for shared it ;) +1
This deck wont really work without alexstraza.
I dropped a game to this deck on ladder with Handlock, and honestly I think if it weren't for the surprise factor of Priest bursting for 14 damage in 1 turn the opponent would never have had a chance to win vs anything mid-rangey enough not to auto-lose steam vs the Taunt wall. The deck needs to be a little less cute and have more mid-rangey threats itself. I think Dr.Boom and Sylvanas are probably an auto-include for instance, just so you can muscle back the board.
Malygos also seems like a decent choice just for redundancy of combo enablers.
What is our mulligan here?
I keep losing to midrange/control decks, aggro is no problem at all!
They just kind of kill me before I can pull off the combo or I never draw the emperor, etc, etc.
I am rank 7 right now and really want this deck to work, because I love tge Velen mindblast combo!
Any advices on how to better play this deck?
I mean, if you're already rank 7 you're pretty good to hit legend later on in the season with the deck. Midrange is a weakness of the deck, so it might require good draws to win.
Thank you!
I´m struggling against zoolocks D:
So much minions x.x > need auchenai circle
its 11 mana for alex combo (alex+thalnos+smite+2xblast). wtf
