Reached Legend during Season 12 using this Deck and my Midrange Hunter !
Introduction
Hello everyone ! I'm Spark, Legend player from France, and today we'll be taking a look at my Demonlock build.
As you may already have noticed with my recent Hunter Decks, Snake Bite and Deadly Tactics, respectively focused on Beasts and Deathrattles, I love highly synergistic Decks. After opening Mal'Ganis recently, I decided to take a look back at Demon synergies as I already toyed a bit with them in the past.
The Deck makes great use of all those awesome interactions and can fight a wide variety of Decks pretty efficiently with its solid Midrange playstyle. It's slightly on the Control side with some very cool and reliable combos in it, which will often reward you with some crazy wins.
I used the Deck with some awesome results from Rank 6 to Legend ! You can see my winrates at the end of the guide (updated weekly).
Deck Breakdown
Combo Pieces :
The Deck has access to many different combos using a target (a minion with a valuable deathrattle) and an amplifier (a way to activate the deathrattle while generating some form of value) from the following list :
Targets : Nerubian Egg, Voidcaller, Sylvanas Windrunner, Boom Bot
Amplifiers : Power Overwhelming, Void Terror, Shadowflame
Voidcaller is the central card of the Deck. This little guy will help you regain Tempo by throwing down some Demons for free while dying. Its body is good at trading during the midgame and its effect is just devastating, always try to make the best of use of it by playing weaker Demons to ensure he summons the bigger ones ;)
Void Terror is one of the most underrated card in the game. Of course, it may seem cheesy at first glance but when you use it in the right build it can do some amazing stuff !
Its primary use is to trigger Nerubian Egg or follow up a Power Overwhelming play to build a strong threat that your opponent will have to answer.
It can also help triggering Voidcaller to summon your beloved Doomguard, or Sylvanas Windrunner for a game-winning late game steal !
Shadowflame is already a great card but is even more valuable in this Deck. You'll look for similar combos with it, triggering a powerful Deathrattle while clearing the board. You can also power up a minion with Power Overwhelming or Abusive Sergeant if the opponent's board is too sticky ;)
Core Demons :
Voidwalker and Mistress of Pain are really great at dealing with early aggression. Especially the second one since it can heal yourself for some damage in the process and you should really look to abuse this interaction with the available buffs in the Deck.
Doomguard is a superb card for the card has pulling it for free with Voidcaller is an insane tempo move ! If you can't pull this off, you'll be keeping the card in your hand to close the game later on. I personally never had to use it from my hand and found many lethal by keeping it ;)
Dread Infernal is another great target for Voidcaller because its 6/6 body is just the perfect mid-sized threat. Playing it with its Battlecry effect can also be very useful from time to time so don't underestimate that ;)
Mal'Ganis fits the Deck perfectly as you have a lot of Demons to power up and its effect can protect you from so much damage. Pulling it off with Voidcaller will force your opponent to answer it right away and that's fine if he does so. Using it from your hand in the late game can mean the win if you managed to make your opponent waste all his resources ;)
Lord Jaraxxus is just pure awesomeness. Its classic use will win some close game in the late game thanks to the heal, weapon and free 6/6 demons ;) Besides that, pulling him for free with Voidcaller is also a really nice move as a 3/15 body can do a lot of work during the mid game !
Demonic Spells :
Darkbomb is just a good tool to have. It can deal with early aggresion, help killing stickier targets or simply reach lethal damage.
Hellfire comes along with Shadowflame as you can't be sure to have a minion for it on turn 4 against Aggro Decks. Remember that it can also trigger your Nerubian Egg while clearing the board ;) Besides that, its face damage can also be helpful when you're looking for lethal. I can't count how many games I won with Hellfire + Doomguard or some Power Overwhelming shenanigans.
Imp-losion is a really strong tempo tool but slightly too unreliable to justify playing 2 copies. You really want to use it when you're sure that its randomness won't mess up your play ;) After that, the 1/1 bodies can be used with Abusive Sergeant, Power Overwhelming, Defender of Argus or Mal'Ganis for more value.
Demonheart is really a better card than I expected. You'll often surprise your opponent with a powerful trade while keeping a potent threat on the board. The best target for it is definitely Mistress of Pain as you can heal for so much damage with it, allowing you to abuse Life Tap.
Supportive tools :
I already talked a bit about Abusive Sergeant. Its effect allow you to trigger Nerubian Egg while trading, heal yourself for more with Mistress of Pain while trading, power up Shadowflame, or create a target for Big Game Hunter.
Speaking of which, as you don't have true hard removal, Big Game Hunter is pretty important for the Deck because you're often going into the late game. The good thing is that you tend to draw a lot of card so you'll generally have it when needed ;)
You are also playing your own target for it in the name of Dr. Boom because the card is just too good and can bait Big Game Hunter to protect a future Mal'Ganis play. Besides that, Boom Bot are great target for your combo pieces ;)
Finally, Defender of Argus and Sludge Belcher complete the Deck with some defensive options as the metagame is pretty aggressive. Note that a taunted up Lord Jaraxxus can simply mean the win against Aggro Decks ;)
Mulligan
Cards to keep : Voidwalker (except against Warrior), Abusive Sergeant, Nerubian Egg, Mistress of Pain, Darkbomb
Good against Aggro : Hellfire
Good against Control : Voidcaller
Situational keep : Void Terror if you have Nerubian Egg in hand
Alternatives
If you're missing some cards or simply looking to adjust the Deck to your personal preferences, here are some cards you should consider : Demonfire, Loatheb, Antique Healbot, Siphon Soul, Illidan Stormrage, Kel'Thuzad, Ragnaros the Firelord and Alexstrasza
If you're looking to try out some other tech cards, here are the cards that I find the most expandable from my experience : 1 Void Terror (having at least one is too much of a good tech honestly), Defender of Argus, Imp-losion, Demonheart (although I really like this tech and find it very efficient) and Dread Infernal
I'll obviously work on including Imp Gang Boss when Blackrock Mountain will be released, so look for some updates at this time ;)
Update : BRM Release
As stated above, Imp Gang Boss just fits the Deck perfectly ! It was pretty much the 3-drop we lacked for the Deck and it's doing amazingly well at trading against aggressive Decks.
The addition of more early game Demons lead me to test Demonfire again, 2 copies felt a bit too much as I sometimes needed the standard 3 damage spell to kill an early threat so I decided to run the mix of 1 Demonfire and 1 Darkbomb.
Then I decided to tech in the new Demonwrath and god it's doing amazing ! That's a very appropriate early game tool to control aggressive decks and complements perfectly our set of board clears with various amount of damage. Not to mention that it obviously synergizes well with the build ;)
Finally, Emperor Thaurissan fits the Deck very nicely as you often draw many cards throughout the game thanks to your hero power, so it always produce great value. This card by itself allow some crazy combos that couldn't be possible otherwise or simply make your standard combos cheaper, which is a huge a gain in tempo !
Here is a laddering session with the updated Deck :
I also took this opportunity to update my Zoolock : Demonic Zoo !
This is pretty much the aggressive variant of this Deck and also uses a lot of Demon synergies to achieve victory, so don't hesitate to check it out if want to have some fun with another playstyle ;)
Update : LOE Release
The Deck has also run through some minor changes to adapt to the meta after the release of League of Explorers ! Nothing to crazy about that, but had to take a look back at the Deck since I didn't changed it for a long time.
I had to adapt to a faster meta and put back 2 Defender of Argus for their great synergy with our early minions and Lord of Jarraxus when summoned by Voidcaller.
Demonfire comes back in the Deck as it kills Knife Juggler very nicely and can empower your demon, which is especially helpful with Mistress of Pain to make it stickier and regain a good amount of life.
Gameplay Videos
I've uploaded a Deck Gameplay Series spotlighting the Deck in action.
I definitely recommend checking out the entire playlist to see how to play the Deck and how awesome those Demon synergies can be !The playlist contains the following Match Ups : Warrior, Secret Mage, Mech Mage, Zoolock, Priest, Druid and some other laddering sessions or game highlights.
Closing
The Deck is a lot of fun thanks to all those synergies, it can shine at each stage of the game and has some really unsuspected burst potential.
It is particularly strong against slower Decks due to Life Tap and its solid late game value but can also fight aggressive Decks pretty well due to its efficient early tools and mid-game presence.
Here are my winrates with the Deck on the ladder (Legend S12) :
That's it for the guide guys, I hope you'll enjoy the Deck as much as I do !

Where are the new cards? Is this up to date? It says updated to kharazan, but i cant see anything from LOE on.
The last update is from LOE. I've tried a similar Deck in Wild with the addition of N'Zoth and it's still very fine.
But I'm not updating such old decks, rather creating new posts ;)
You probably had a notification because I edited the title, so all my decks contains the season, makes it a bit more clear since I post many lists ;)
Hey mate, +1 from me, rly good deck on current meta... atm climbing ladder from lower ranks (where i fell after some crazy testing ideas :D ) and bcs of mass aggro shamans around i made few changes:
-1x void terror and -1x sludge belcher for +1 antique healbot and +1 loatheb. works perfectly :)
Yeah it seems fine =) Thanks for the feedback, have fun !
I really like the changes to this deck. This deck seems much more consistent and forgiving to small mistakes. Well done Sparkaz! I think you have created another great deck!
Thanks man, indeed it gained consistency with those changes, especially in the current meta ^^
No, Illidan's decent but far from optimal
I didn't experimented with this card yet. I don't really feel like it's that good of a card but we need to test it before stating anything ^^
If you wanted to add some taunt to this deck, what would you suggest? Something anti-agro if not a taunt minion.
Argus is a good choice to go along with Belchers ;)
Hi there! Glad to see someone else have success with the demons! I made a deck very similar to this (found this in "similar decks") I noticed people asking for an updated list for TGT, and I agree that there is not much to do or see there as far as this particular style of deck goes, but I did include 1 tgt as well as some other variations that I think you may find interesting.
I like this build for the most part, but I never enjoyed putting nerubian eggs in anything but zoo, not even a huge fan of their conditionality in zoo. I think they are great, but I just don't like them, if that makes sense..... so I replaced them with wrathguard, as well as a few other changes. They synergize very well and I like the fact that I get the good minion immediately, despite the obvious downside. it still synergizes fine with void terror, and even better with shadowflame. I also put in a molten giant and a healbot, as well as some other things. The results have been very good and somewhat interesting. I have to say that the wrathguards are great for the early game tempo and molten fuel, and rarely come back to haunt me.
Like I said, found this "similar decks." The highest similarity was 76% so there are definitely key differences.
Feel free to check out my deck list here: http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/332030-tgt-demonlock-midrange
Would much appreciate hearing what you think =D
Oh I see, you're a little bit more on the Handlock side with this variant ^^ That seems perfectly fine ;)
I didn't tried Wrathguard at all, I think it's too punishing to be played normally but as you said, it's an excellent shadowflame target and void terror (well, you could honestly go even more handlock with watcher). Anyway, how this card is doing for you ?
Thanks! Wrathguard is pretty good. I definitely find it to be more of an asset than a liability almost all the time, and it is great with mal'ganis as well as the molten giant and lord jaraxxus. (and the afforementioned combos above) I sometimes see ppl just throwing molten into demonlock but I never felt as good about it as I do with this deck, partially due to wrathguard. I kind of tried to take all my lock experience with zoo, handlock, and the demonlock I never used, and mush it all together coherently. I had to take out most of the zoo stuff though, because it just didn't seem to fit.... Also wrathguard as given me more early game tempo than ever before with this sort of deck (and it carries onto the molten possibly, ie the endgame.) It also made Jaraxxus work quite well, unlike before. The watchers not being able to attack is a huge thing against them in this deck, sense I am trying to keep tempo in the early. If you play wrathguard at the right time, there's a good chance you will get decent value out of it. I often get a 2 for one minion deal off it at least, when played turn 2. I get one on turn 2 alot of the time. and If you dont get it on turn 2, it can be shadow flame fodder, hidden behind a taunt, power overwhelminged and eaten by void terror, and more. If you get mal ganis out the turn before, then its text is almost null and void. Also, if you think about it, you might just be leaving your face exposed if you didnt play wrathguard so what's the harm? atleast it kills things. It's not really going to be a downside unless like.... cobra shot or some AOE or something. but then you have healbot, and many many taunts to keep the opponent at bay.
Also, your opponenent might get cocky on you and do a bunch of face damage through that thing. little does he know that you have a molten giant, and Jar Jar or Mal'ganis in hand. You're obviously not a handlock, so they usually dont see the molten coming. It works great in the deck and I just love the card.
I used to run jugglers and creepers and bombs in my 2 drops and it just wasn't working as well as wrathguards. not to mention imp-losion and the fact that patrons were even more prominent..... It was bad. Not the deck itself, but it held no place in the meta.
But yeah I guess I did go a bit more handlock with this build, but it has much better tempo in the early and mid game, as well as a pretty sick late game. It's still pretty tempo/midrange based.
Thanks for the feedback! glad you approve of the deck. It seems to be doing rather well. it's only gone from rank 20-10 so far, but that is only due to time constraints. This deck is better than that.
PS. This warlock deck has done the best against mage, hunter, and rogue (the warlock's worst matchups,) as well as the other classes, of any other warlock deck I have seen/used. At least for me.
Yeah I see, it makes sense, especially since you're also running molten giant ^^
Yeah, unfortunately 2 was a bad idea against all the aggro on the middle parts of the ladder. I'm going to edit the deck right now to it's current form. -1 argus -1 wrathguard +1 hellfire +1 belcher.
This seems to have made my winrate against aggro much better. this deck did fine before, but I just had one of those horrid days on ladder that made me realize some tweeking was necessary.
These wrathguards are really great against any kind of priest priest and secret paladin, though, which are fairly rampant on the ladder in my region. They are not bad cards, I dont think. They can definitely be very good, even having 2. Against many aggro decks, they are not bad, but having 2 can make things hard at times. I think this card is good as a "one of" unless you are going super aggro style.
Yeah that seems a little bit more consistent this way ;)
Thanks for the additional feedback about the card ^^
Thanks!
Also, np, I hope my stream of consciousness wasn't too disorganized xD
Basically, in control, it's great tempo but having 2 requires too much healing against aggro, and may ultimately slow you down too much. In aggro, 2 may just be fine.
On a final note demonwrath has been doing good things, but semi screws me in the zoo matchup sometimes. I like the card but I don't know if I should keep it because of this....
Cheers!
I concur Sparkaz, I still love this deck. I still have not had the luck of getting Mal Ganis.
I run:
-1 MalGanis. -1 Lord Jarax, -Emp Thaurisson, =- Hellfire, -Imp Gang
+Harrison, +1 Kezan, +Dark Bomb, ............
OK, My deck is probably one of your earlier Versions...HAHAHA Deck Name was saved in Deck Tracker.
Point is, that is is one of the funnest decks out there, even while missing some key cards. Those Void Terrors run wild. When ever I am struggling (like now, I am behind the Ladder curve with the expansion) I go to this deck, and enlightens my faith that I know how to play this game. I am not a FACE FACE Agro player, I am more of a control player. It creates issues when I play against agro, or, even worse, attempt to play an agro deck..I play control...lol
Ahah nice, glad you still enjoy the Deck =D
This is the version I am running. I am thinking of crafting mal'Ganis, and replacing Sylvanas with it. It will be interesting to see if that works more consistent. Although, having 5 ways to pop Sylanas (2 Void Callers, 2 Power Overwhelming, or straight running it in a big minion) is nice, and has turned the tide a number of times.
Harrison Jones is a no show quite often. I seem to be running into less weapons this week. He was added with the influx of Grim Warrior and Oil Rogues. Replacing him with Mal Ganis is a thought, but, moves the curve a bit higher.
Dreadsteed seems like a decent card to add somewhere (although, I have not opened any packs with them yet). Only cards I could see removing are the Voidwalkers. That would def. curve too high, and agro would run me over by that point. Plus, those dragon priests with Cabal would ruin the day..haha
Any spaces you see to put in a TGT card? Thanks!
