I don't like playing Aggro, so I came up with this control deck, and this led me to Legend (from rank 15) And also my first time in Legend!
I had to add Kezan Mystic since 50% of all matches were against Hunter or Mages. It's a very specific card against this classes, and when used correctly, it's instawin
This deck can have board control since the beggining of the game
Matchups:
- Hunter: 70-30
- Control Warrior: 85-15
- Warlock: 60-40
- Rogue: 85-15
- Paladin: 40-60
- Priest: 60-40
- Druid: 75-25
- Mech Mage: 60-40
- Shaman: 70-30
(Against a Scumbag Hunter) :D
Here it is my first video which turned out to be a great game. I'm sorry it's in Spanish and the sound isn't pretty good, but it is my first day :D
Next match was against Face Hunter. Got rekt by my awesome skill (and luck)
If you want more gameplays, I will try to upload more gameplays with this an different decks (I'm new with this)

Winrate in Legend
(With 3 Face Hunters in a row) Kezan + Illuminator -> Watch their fear in their eyes
Replacements
1. Perfectly Replaceable
Troggzor the Earthinator -> Archmage Antonidas (I don't have it), Harrison Jones or any control card that you like
2. Ok to be replaced
Sneed's Old Shredder -> Ragnaros the Firelord, Alexstrasza. I would like to try Ysera too, but I don't have it
3. Almost Impossible to replace
Dr. Boom -> You can try one of the above
Kezan Mystic and Illuminator -> Key cards against Hunter / Mech Mage
Mulligans
Easy. Usually try to pick the low cost cards to start controlling the board as soon as possible.
Mana Wyrm + Unstable Portal it is a really strong opening against control
Mana Wyrm + Frostbolt it is a really strong opening against aggro
Some considerations:
Priest
Mana Wyrm, Frostbolt, Flamecannon, Unstable Portal, Mad Scientist
Don't play Mana Wyrm on turn 1 unless you have something to remove the (possible) cleric!
Warrior
Mana Wyrm, Mad Scientist, Flamecannon, Unstable Portal, [Piloted Shredder (Preferable with coin)]
I found Sneed's Old Shredder very good against Warrior since they don't usually run silence, and they usually have to spend 2 removals on this card
Hunter and Mech Mage
Top tier: Mana Wyrm, Frostbolt, Flamecannon, Kezan Mystic
1st Tier: Mad Scientist, Illuminator, Unstable Portal, Sludge Belcher
Try to duplicate the Healbot or Illuminator. Always clear EVERYTHING, specially all beasts
Rogue
Ice Block will prevent any One Turn Kill, so clean all their board and play Loatheb when they play Violet Teacher, or if you don't have anything else to play
How To Play
Against Aggro
Their main source of their damage are minions, so try to keep the board clear, cards like Illuminator and Antique Healbot will help you recover the initial damage
Frostbolt and Mana Wyrm will help you stopping their start
Against Control
Try to maintain board control, but go face when you have a clear advantage on the board, you can always finish them with Fireball
About card draw
I didn't find it necessary because of its mana curve. Normally you always have something to play, but like any card game, there is a luck factor, and you might have an awful hand for some turns.
But if you want to increase that chance of having cards, you could add Azure Drake or Arcane Intellect instead of Troggzor the Earthinator, which I think is the most replaceable card of the deck. Maybe -1Unstable Portal for a second one
Customization is always important when playing a deck, you should change everything you want to make it suit your play style
I had fun playing this deck, so I hope you enjoy it
Feel free to ask / add suggestions
The problem with using Archmage Antonidas in this deck is keeping him alive a turn to actually cast spells. Without cheap spare parts to capitalize on his ability he will often times just be a 5/7 for 7. I would favor a Sunwalker, Piloted Sky Golem or even a Blizzard as a replacement to Troggzor the Earthinator.
I played this deck and just pass rank 14-17, I just lost it in that rank it work?
any thoughts on more aoe? been getting wrecked by shamans lately
I didn't get the last 3 naxx expansions. i did 2 loot hoarders instead of the scientists (card draw is never a bad thing) and instead of the iceblock i did counterspell. i hate it when mages flamestrike my board.
played this deck to do my 7 win daily and amassed a 12-4 record over the night. I really enjoyed playing the list although I do not think it is perfect.
illuminator is so situational. i think healbot would be better or should at least added. I also think i want one more secret. either a duplicate or another entity.
also, i really like troggzor. not sure what else should be at the end of the curve, but troggzor is good.
Is echo worth running in this in place of kezan? I was gonna do science since I've only used kezan like 2 times in the last session.
Any input?
I traded Sylvanas for harrison. Had a game where I duplicated harrison against a rogue. Many tears and cards.
I want to add in ysera and, maybe rag. Dunno yet, only rank 13.
hey congrats on doing well with mage control in the current meta! I ran secret mage and did well with it before (http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/106981-top-28-legend-na-secret-mage-very-strong-vs-meta) and ive been trying something similar to your deck
a few changes though
+1 kt over trogg
+1 rag over sneed
I have both cards but those have been working better for me.
Also -1 illuminator and -1 ice block
+1 kirin tor +1 mirror entity
although the heal combo is nice its too inconsistent and I like playing with board control
-1 poly +1 mind control tech
better for ladder climbing as we play more aggro
-2 piloted +2 water ele
water ele so good. its a fatter body and people go the distance to kill it
This is my version.I've played this deck A LOT and I do not see how your win percentages can be that high against certain classes. specifically hunter. That is a very tough matchup for this deck. Mystic and Illuminator seem too gimmicky but haven't tried them at all so interesting choice. My build is a little different but a fairly similar play style. I think the core can stay pretty similar but this is a deck that you can tweak quite a bit to have better matchups depending on what you are playing against.
Also find it funny that this is salty mage and my user name is supersalty. =P
I like this deck a lot, I replaced my stall ("troll") mage with it. I don't have Troggzor the Earthinator so I am using Kel'Thuzad instead. I find KT to be very strong in the deck, I have not lost a match when I was able to play KT in a meaningful spot. Particularly if you get him going with a Sludge Belcher it's a very difficult spot for the opponent.
Biggest losing condition is against aggro hunter with good draw if you don't draw removals or Illuminators early; the deck is slow enough that you can be beyond hope of stabilization by T5. Only experience is at top of ladder with new season starting.
I faced a stall mage in a mirror matchup and the match took 35 minutes!
Looks like a really cool deck. I have one question though. What is your reasoning between shredder over Water elemental? Is it just cause its more sticky?
This looks to be a great deck once I'm able to finish it up. I don't have Troggzor at which I replaced with Antonidas, as well as Sneed's with Big Game Hunter to deal with Dr. Boom and giants a little easier. Is there any merits to running a second Illuminator if the current is stacked with aggro decks?
I wish we could find a good use for this card. With out the ability of the card it is just a war golem and the ability of the card is too RNG to be much use.
Salty deck with no Salty Dog... ;n;
Hi, love this deck! Really wanna try focusing on it this season. However i dont have sneeds old shredder or troggzor, but i do have cairne black knight, rag, alex and yseera, so i tried yseera and rag, but i found out that alex can be so good in aggro matchups where you draw a bit unfortunately, how would you replace those two cards considering the cards i have (also got 2 sky golems however) Thanks again :)
the only card i don't have is iceblock, does it work replaced with another healbot? or ice barrier?
Nstemp's Salty Control Mage Gameplay.
Guys... You don't need cards that read "draw card" to generate an advantage. Mad scientist draws you a card AND plays it for you. Duplicate is a draw 2 effect. Archmage generates you an unlimited amount of cards.... Get the picture?
Thanks for this deck, it is pretty fun to play some different cards. I didn't have Troggzor or Sneed. I subbed in The Black Knight and Ysera. It seems to work pretty good. Ysera has won a game for me so far but maybe Sneed would have too. It seems like The Black Knight would be helpful against hunters and also mages who play belcher.
I tried it out intermittently for 20 games, 12-8 (60%), played in ranks 20-14. Fun deck to play.
My changes:
-2 Piloted Shredder, +1 Kezan Mystic, +1 Water Elemental
Surprisingly, I found I wasn't getting much utility at all from the shredders. With so many Hunters and M.Mages trying to climb quickly on the ladder, adding an extra Mystic for a chance to draw it has helped, since there is no card draw. Threw in good old water elemental for hunters, pallys, occasional warrior, and to a lesser extent druids. Soaks up a bit of their removal.
Trogz and Shredder isn't quite the formidable late game I'd hope for, many times they are just ignored on the board in my experience. Will try out Harrison for Trog and Ysera/Rag for Shredder. Seems like reasonable replacements.
Gratz on the legend m8.
My experience is that even though 75% of ladder is hunter and mech mage, kezan is not that useful, as I almost never have it when I need it. Also, the body is so weak in this meta.
I agree with you on the late game, testing out KT and rag instead. How did your changes work out?
