My own tech version of mech mage. Credit to Chakki for playing something very similar about a month ago, his deck was the inspiration for this.
I added in the Cogmaster because I needed more early game tempo, 1 drops proved to be too important to cut. +1 Loatheb for anti-spell decks.
The most popular question that i've received in this thread is "what can I replace card 'x' with?"
Card Replacements
- Archmage Antonidas: There is no replacement, he is 100% mandatory.
- Piloted Sky Golem: I'm only running 1 right now, and it really makes a difference in late game pressure. Again, I would sub in an Azure Drake for spell damage & card draw.
I'm playing this deck for a while now, here are the changes that I made:
-1 Piloted Sky Golem
-1 Toshley
-1 Kezan Mystic
+1 Tinkertown
+1 Mechanical Yeti
+1 BGH (Much better than Kezan since everyone runs Dr.Boom but only 2 classes have consistent secret)
Getting shit on with this by oil rogue, any advice on the matchup? thanks
[card]Troggzor the Earthinator[/card] is the ultimate Oil Rogue killer. Consider it if you're hitting too many rogues!
With a similar iteration of the deck i only have problem against Mill Druid, do you have advice to do better in this MU?
I don't think i've seen one since the first week of GvG, so i'm not entirely sure :-/
Maybe i was still too low in the ladder, over rank 10 they disappear :)
I would have to disagree. I rode a 70% win streak from 4-legend with thos last night with little to no issues at all.
@Salamandar73, You are totally entitled to do as you wish, but with all of those changes you made, you're better off making your own deck and writing up commentary for it because it is no longer "my deck" anymore. You suggested removing the two most important cards in my deck Bomb Lobber as well as adding a Lil' Exorcist which is purely a defensive card...this completely goes against the entire deck strategy in the first place. Mech mage does not win by playing defensively; it wins by playing offensively and continually adding board pressure while sometimes removing the opponents minions. Bomb Lobber not only removes 4 health minions, it adds board pressure which is very important.
I will agree with you that my point about hitting legend with it is anecdotal, however from a strategic standpoint i'm telling you that your changes are suboptimal based on what I already have here.
I've always found Flamestrike useful in mech mage, to reset board. Then you can regain board or even fish for that last fireball or Antonidas + spare parts to close the game. Without Flamestrike, if opponent has board, it's GG. I've taken out Kezan Mystic for it. Also don't have Toshley, so I put a drake.
One of my friends swears by running 1 Flamestrike, but I tend to disagree with this. Mech Mage wins by getting board control and snowballing from there. More often than not, if you lost board control, you're kind of screwed anyways. With that being said, I prefer to tune my deck to have one singular goal (aggression in this case), rather than make it a hybrid (agression/some hard removal). I've found that Flamestrike is often a very dead card and I don't recommend playing it in Mech Mage
what do you say -1 fireball for +1 polymorph?
100% no on this one. Fireball is taunt removal and late game burst (more often that not). Polymorph is decent in some decks but mech mages need to maintain pressure in order to win. Polymorph is more of a defensive card
i took out the kezan mystic for mimiron's head. turned out to be quite interesting lol, but doesnt always work. i cant see how i can fit my mimiron other than this particular deck though. its perfect
Hmm I haven't thought of this, I only included Toshley because of the strong body and spare parts. It could work though, let me know if you give it a try!
I have every card except Antonidas, obviously this would be a problem with other mech mage decks, but this deck seems to have more late game. What is a good replacement for Antonidas?
I don't really know of any, he's a pretty huge win condition in the lategame.
Is there any good replacement you would suggest for Toshley? I have Boom and Antonidas but I can't really justify crafting Toshley since he's so niche. Thanks!
I'm still pretty new so I'm missing Dr.Boom and Toshley. I added 2 Azure Drake instead to have some card draw and a 4/4 compliments the other 3-4 drops to help draw attention. As I'm typing this I'm on a 3 game win streak and just had a Priest concede at 26 or 28 HP once I dropped Archmage Antonidas and his hand was empty.
Was looking for a non-portal (can win you games but too unreliable), non-secret (taking 4 deck slots is too much when everyone expects the mirror identity) mech mage variant and I think this is the best I've tried.
Had made those same tech changes to your deck a few days ago and they're great. The Cogmaster is essential to the early game and Loatheb can be just what you need to protect your board and push for lethal the next turn.
The real star here is the Bomb Lobber. Fantastic tempo play. Nice find on that!
Haven't had much use for the Kezan yet though. Only used it once vs a Hunter. Needed it another two games vs. mirror and it didn't come up. Keeping it in for now because it doesn't hurt you too much as a 4 drop. But I may opt for a second Mech Yeti.
Thanks for sharing your deck!
You may be correct about the Kezan mystic I think. I'm considering putting in an additional yeti as well. let me know how it works for you!
