Hello everyone, I want to share my DiscoDrake Paladin, a Paladin Control Deck which features 2 Core Wincons and made it from lowest rank to legend this month.
Wincons:
At heart, this deck is all about holding the board and winning through pure strength or attrition. You got 2 tools for this purpose which will enhance your deck greatly:
First, you got Lor'themar Theron, who will double all your minions in your deck. At the point you play him, a clock is ticking for your opponent, since at some point you will outvalue most opponents by pure brute force. If that is not enough or you are unlucky finding Lor'themar Theron, you got the second option of this wincon. You are digging throughout the game, and your 4th excavate will give you as a reward The Azerite Dragon, which also will boost all your minions. Since you have so many midrange minions, both cards will gift roughly the same stats and help you win through board.
If everything false apart and you need an alternative or your fight for attrition is coming to and end or you cant find one of your first wincons and feel you dont have any more time to stretch the game, then you have your second wincon, which is Kazakusan. This big Dragon will give you 2 copies each of 5 treasures you will discover as your new deck. This can and often will turn the tide in your favor and maybe rescue a lost thought game.
Problems:
Since this is a controldeck which focusses hard on board and attrition, it depends on long games. Unfortunately, sometimes you wont be able to go for a long game because of either an very hard aggressive enemy deck which you need to brake down fast and hard or because of an enemy deck which focusses on combo gameplay, in which case you need to speed up as much as possible.
My advise would be to allways mulligan as if you were facing an aggressive deck. This way you will avoid the biggest problem caused by aggressive decks and yet be able to apply pressure if the opponent is playing a combo deck. Speaking of which...
Mulligan:
Always watch out for early cards which will give you either carddraw like Redscale Dragontamer or Alliance Bannerman or card creation tools like Bronze Explorer, Kobold Miner and especially Runi, Time Explorer. These will keep your handsize high, draw or create you vital cards and provide you with answers early on. Alternatives are cards that keep you alive such as Righteous Protector or Cathedral Gargoyle or cards that impact your boardfight immediately, like Amber Whelp, Daring Drake or Burrow Buster.
An option is if, and only if, you start with the coin and a 4th card in hand, you may keep one of your key "mid to lategame"-carries, which are your four 7 mana cards Amitus, the Peacekeeper, Lor'themar Theron, The Leviathan and Anachronos. You pick them if you suspect a specific matchup, where you will take Amitus and Anachronos against aggressive decks as they provide you with time (pun intended) and space. You only keep Lor'themar in expected controlmatchups which will be boosted heavily by a then turn 6 played Lor'themar Theron.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is actually straight forward and not highly complicated, yet you need to be able to adapt and know when to strike or hold. Try to maintain a big handspace as your variation is a great strength. Decide which wincon is your most likely and try to use it as best as possible. Again, if something goes wrong, adapt and change your path. This deck is highly adaptable and that is your key to victory. And please dont sleep on the Timewarden and Raid Boss Onyxia combo.
If you got any questions just ask me below. Have fun and good luck.
