This is the priest deck that I took to legend this month (I scraped in with 2 hours to go!). I had a 64% win rate with my deck tracker over 64 games, but I don't track all my games as I play some on mobile.
The aim of the deck is to draw Creation Protocol and copy some of your extremely useful minions. The deck has very limited minions so you always get a decent one from Creation Protocol. Sometimes you will draw all your minions - it sucks, but you can still win.
Which minion to copy is very dependent on the match-up. Against minion aggro or tempo decks you want Ignis, the Eternal Flame. Against control you want Yogg-Saron, Unleashed or Aman'Thul. Against arcane hunter you almost certainly want Blackwater Behemoth.
Against OTK style decks (including warrior) you want Ignis, the Eternal Flame, but you will probably lose this type of match up. I think I probably only won a a couple of games against warrior. Sif mage is a bit better, but still heavily favoured towards the mage.
You almost never want to copy Ra-den unless you're well into a game with lots of minions already played (this card is usually played either as a finisher or to protect a board against a clear).
Prison of Yogg-Saron is in here 1) to reduce the number of spells, and 2) as an "oh shit" button.
The deck wins through three main routes (with a uncommon sneaky fourth one!):
1) Multiple Ignis weapons - the first is often a 1 mana poison weapons to stabilise the board. Then you want to aim for 5 or 10 mana weapons depending on board state and mana. Whether you choose to summon minions or go for health depends on the board state and match up. Against warrior you want minions from a windfury 5 mana weapon.
2) Value (Yogg and Aman'Thul) - grinding down other control decks. My experience was that I tended to beat other control decks because i) I only run a 30 card deck ii) this deck has more tempo than a typical control deck. Remeber than Aman'Thul does not kill the enemny minions - he disappears them. That means they can't ressurect them, and I won plenty of games against warlocks who didn't seem to understand this!
3) Extreme health (Behemoth) - againt hunter just out heal them. Blackwater Behemoth is excellent into ZOMBEEEES!!! and I won plenty games through this interaction. Worth noting is that Blackwater Behemoth will attack the mininon summoned by Hidden Meaning (assuming the secret was played first). I was very sceptical, but Twilight Torrent is also decent in this match up.
4) There is a fourth (very unrealiable win con) which is to resummon and copy discovered charge minions with Ra-den and Aman'Thul. Usually you kill your own Ra-den then use the summoned Aman'Thul to copy the re-summoned charge minions. This also works with Dar'Khan Drathir.
Deck strategy is to keep Creation Protocol and any discover effects. Against aggro or paladin you probably want a board clear too. Against Rogue you want a silence (probably Shard of the Naaru). Never keep a minion - we want to discover them, not draw them. Ignis is the most versatile minion so you never want to draw him naturally. Power Chord: Synchronize can also give you your opponents win-con and is especially good with multiple Dar'Khan Drathir being resummoned by Ra-den.
In terms of substitutes I don't think there are any substitutes for the minions. You probably don't need Ra-den but adding another spell reduces the chance you find Creation Protocol with Thrive in the Shadows.
I tried using the locations to reduce the number of spells, but it's probably not as good. With the locations I also tried Dispossessed Soul and this was OK, but it does reduce the consistency of the hit with Creation Protocol. Maybe a deck without Ra-den could try it? Fan Club is lackluster in this deck and Cathedral of Atonement has too few targets and you nearly always have quite a full hand. I also tried Dirty Rat to increase the win-rate against warrior, but again, on balance, it loses more games than it wins. I didn't try the priest weapon, but this seems like it would be objectively worse than the locations. I also tried a version using love everlasting and Identity Theft but it struggled against any early focussed decks.
It is (imo) a fun deck, and no two games play out the same way. Just a shame that Odyn, Prime Designate is in the game. That said, my final "boss" was against a warrior, and playing Odyn, Prime Designate cost them the game...karma I guess!
Been thinking bout swaping Ra-den for a viper since Ignis weapons are so predominant as a win condition. Also I havent used Ra-den succesfully a single time I think.
He is an intersting card and if you had to cut one minion, it would probably be him.
That said, I won quite a few games with Ra-Den even just using him as a tempo play when he was only resummoning a couple of ignis's.
He's also really good fun (imo) and it's lovely to ressurect a board of Titan's, copy a Behemoth, clear the opponents board, and heal to full!
As an alternative you can always copy your opponents viper after they destroy your first weapon!
I swapped out Holy Nova for something more useful like Dirty Rat so its not doing that badly against warrior and mage.
Certainly a reasonable swap. Holy Nova was originally included to be used against Drum druid decks (either on it's own in the early game or in combo with silence when they get buffed), but I didn't see too many of them at the end of last season. I did actually find it to be quite a useful card though outside of that match up though, and it is a card you can happily play on an empty board to reduce Yogg and clear a hand space.
Drum druid was also the reason why I went with Harmonic Pop over Lightbomb, as the latter wont clear a buffed board. Whirlpool is also a consideration, but given most of our minions should be copies it's not always something you want to play.
Ra-den is kind of a confusing card to me: When you make a copy of a card and play the copy, does he recognize that as "not starting in your deck" or will any minion that was actually in your deck, regardless of whether it's a copy or not, not be acknowledged by him?
Copies made by creation protocol or power chord: synchronise will be resurrected by Ra-den. The minions summoned by Aman'Thul's ability (6 cost with taunt and lifesteal) will not be resummoned as you don't play them. The legendary added to hand after you use Aman'Thuls abilities will be resummoned if you play it from hand.
You do need to keep track of which minion was the copy though if they all end up in hand.
Worth noting is that a Ra-Den will never re-summon himself, even if it was a copy.
Excellent, thanks for the information. Hopefully you understand why I had to ask, as the wording on that card could easily be interpreted a few different ways. One of the weaknesses of not using a token system like in a table-top game where it's visibly different when you have a "generated" resource in play/graveyard.
This deck is really fun and quite good!
Glad you're enjoying it!
well as much as i liked this deck - it begins to ultimately suck ass after platine 10 :D
I did literally play it to legend, so it might depend on your match ups. As I said in the write up, any OTK style decks are basically an auto loss, but every other style of deck is winable.
Checking my stats, the highilghts for this deck were against Paladin and Death Knight, whereas the worst results were against druid (both flavours of OTK) and warrior (OTK.)
Either way, I'm not suggesting it's some crazy meta breaker deck - I just enjoyed playing it so I thought I would post it! If it's not winning for you it definitely becomes less fun :(
edit: one interaction I forgot to mention in my write up is that you can use Deafen to silence Yogg (or Aman'thul) to allow them to attack. This definitely won me a couple of games but it wont work the turn you play them.
nah man it's fine i love this deck of yours, just it became very hard after platinum in start of the season, i definitely would push legend again with this deck
Sometimes Yogg is not enough for clearing, if creatures have, for example, a divine shield, or gain stats too quickly through buffs, or at a high rate of crowding the table with large creatures in general, etc., but most often this is true in matches against paladins, a couple of times I felt the lack of Shadow Word: Ruin
Steamcleaner is a great card against DK, Warlocks, Control Priests and decks with Fizzle
In general, E.T.C is such a life-saving card for special cases when the classic rock-paper-scissors scheme is somewhat not in your favor
The strategy of having 10 cards in hand IMHO is fraught with the loss of key cards for further play, not so necessary when there is a lot of healing
I've been thinking about a similar deck for the last 2-3 days and I have to say that you managed to make a pretty balanced build of this type. Regarding the cards that you described - yes, I agree with most of your conclusions. In fact, this particular variation is very good, it’s fun to play, the efficiency is decent, although I would probably add E.T.C. here with Steamcleaner and Shadow Word: Ruin, but I don’t know how appropriate this is when there is a strong dependence on Creation Protocol
Good job dude, and thx for for the detailed description
I think E.T.C could be interesting as you have potential to pick multiple times if you get copies of him. That said, I think he's probably a little slow and the cards you typically inlcude in ETC arent ones that tend to all be useful against the same deck.
Yogg is the main card to deal with large boards or a single large minion (rather than something like shadow word ruin).
Steamcleaner is an interesting one though. I played plenty of (pre-buff) plague DK's and the trend seemed to be that the plagues just arent quick enough against this type of control deck. They mostly won through an aggro style of game where I missed by clears.
You can also try the strategy of having 10 cards in hand to protect from both curses and plagues (usually through summoning multiple Aman'Thul's). It's not as easy without Cathedral of Atonement though.
