TLDR: Rogue has amazing dual tribals. I harnessed every good card available to them and to my amazement, they all work as a promising tempo-style rogue deck.
UPDATE: AFTER 3 DAYS OF GRINDING TO LEGEND, AMALGAM ROGUE IS NOW LEGEND VIABLE
A lot of my win rate with the deck isn't entirely accurate because I constantly experimented but within the last 44 games the deck went through minor tweaks to adjust it so it's practically the same decklist.
CREDITS:
With the feedback and suggestions from everyone in the comments, this deck's potential continues to grow stronger. Thank you everyone for viewing and participating in the growth of this deck
My brother: Suggested E.T.C., Band Manager
YSS: suggested Smothering Starfish, A good tech choice!
cvltbringer666: Recommended Pozzik, Audio Engineer (really solid disruption tempo play)
Kadakk: Playtested my deck and made a video about it, check out his youtube in the comments!
Reinan23 (data and suggestions in the comments): Contributed both to the playtest and evolution of core elements of the deck. Discoveries such as:
This expansion left me wondering where Rogue would end up in terms of power. Would it be another expansion where Miracle Rogue would be on top? I started to consider other options since I really enjoyed the thief package and was worried Rogue would lose that sort of flexibility I kept coming back to enjoy last year
So what did I do? I tried everything available in the new rotation lmao. Deathrattle and Thief stink now since all the core cards to that package have now rotated, so that's a no. I knew lots of people are trying combo rogue since it's the new playstyle Blizzard is pushing so I passed on that. The only archetype that I felt had potential was pirate rogue, but by itself, the tribal couldn't keep up with what the other classes are coming now with the new rotation. Then I wondered, what works with pirates? What would make them able to keep up with anything that comes their way? Then it hit me... Rogue has minions with Great Tribals.
Enter Amalgam Rogue, The Frankenstein of the Rogue class family and my greatest creation.
It blew my mind how smoothly this deck plays. If you're looking for a rogue deck that will constantly surprise you AND your enemies, then this is the deck for you
My thought process on tribal card options
Starting off, I never considered how crazy it was that Rogue has access to many GOOD dual-tribal cards such as:
- Jolly Roger (undead pirate)
- Cutlass Courier (undead pirate)
- Mistake (all)
- Invincible (beast undead)
- Click-Clocker (mech beast)
- Amalgam of the deep (all)
- And the king of the amalgam tribal: The One-Amalgam Band
Notice how many premium undead pirates there are? (pirates were missing some sort of attack and health buff to push them off the ground)
Not to mention that Rogue has access to some of the best standard pirates such as:
- Dread Corsair
- Pufferfist
- Southsea captain
- Filletfighter
- And one of my favorite win-con cards: Pirate Admiral Hooktusk
Sprinkle in the very best cards neutral and class cards, and the tribal lineup is monstrous, such as:
- Crabatoa (beast)
- Rolling Stone (Elemental)
- Rowdy Fan (Quilboar)
- Ghoulish Alchemist (undead)
- Beatboxer (mech)
- Potionmaster Putricide (undead)
- Ziliax (mech)
- Party Animal (beast)
Mulligan and strategy:
Now to the meat of this deck, How to play it.
To be honest it's simple. ALWAYS PLAY TO THE SITUATION
The greatest strength of the deck comes from the fact that you can adapt to any playstyle (this deck is more of a midrange deck than tempo, but I NEVER have an issue with having a strong tempo play up until the endgame.)
I would summarize the deck strengths as this
Pros:
- Jack of all trades: It can beat every deck archetype if you understand what you are up against
- High creativity: this deck brings a smile to my face and warms my heart with how different each game feels
- Easy to pilot: It's a tempo deck at heart, spend your mana well and always keep the pressure and your plays will be easy to make
Cons:
- Jack of all trades: Now keep in mind, This deck cannot be the best in every playstyle and that's a blessing as well as a curse. There will be moments where you will get out-aggroed by a demon hunter or a warlock throw out big stuff on turn 5 and wipe you out. You cannot always be the best at what you are trying to do in each game.
- Poor resource management can cost you games: Use every single tool at your disposal for each game. If you lose your card draw engine early on it may be game set. Fail to maximize weapon swings and buff targets? Yeah, that can Sink the ship. Creativity is key but also keep in mind when to show discipline and hold back when you need to, it may very well come down to the last few cards you have.
Now that we have established the strengths and weaknesses, let's talk about the:
GAME PLANS AND MULLIGAN
As a tempo style-flexible deck, here is the plan for each archetype you face off against as well as what I feel how sided the matchup is:
- Control:
Key Mulligans: Amalgam of the deep, Cutlass courier, Party Animal
You have a slight edge despite almost being favored towards them. If you use your resources well and constantly pressure your opponent then you have a fair chance of catching them off guard with your finisher cards like Crabatoa, Pirate Admiral Hooktust, Astalor Bloodsworn, and The One Amalgam Band. If they run out of ways to deal with your board then the game is yours.
- Aggro/burn
Key Mulligans: BeatBoxer, Jolly Roger, Filletfighter,
This is a pure coin flip match, you do about as well if not better against most aggro matchups if you use Ziliax to your advantage by buffing/magnetizing it and keeping ahead on board. Clear tokens with Puffer and you can get away with wins. - Combo/Midrange
Key Mulligans: Jolly Roger, Party Animal, Cutlass Courier
Be prepared to refill when necessary, treat it as another control matchup except it's okay to overextend, Always have something to pressure them, more so than the control matchup.
And that's about it for covering this deck. I am going to be playing it often and will stand by my baby. I couldn't keep this deck to myself, make some memories with this deck like I am. I look forward to seeing how people perform with this, how they change it up, and if it makes its mark on hearthstone. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I wish you the best of luck with this Amalgam deck!
I added:
(UPDATE) I added x2 Cult Neophyte because the amount of cheap spell value from almost all the classes is downright criminal
+1x E.T.C., Band Manager: I love this pick because after talking with my brother about it having a sideboard in a midrange deck can help solve those specific cases where you need the "perfect" card (I miss zephrys). The sideboard cards I added are:
Eviscerate: For those times you wish you had 4 extra damage to face (or to clear a minion but usually that's not a big issue)
Sunfury Clergy: For those times you need to survive against burn
Pirate Admiral Hooktusk: For those times you need to outlast your opponent (stealing from Control or Value style decks. Keep in mind there's not too many pirates so you can wait until you know for sure you can proc it)
I'm trying to update this deck for Titans, anyone have any suggestions?
How's this deck doing nowadays?
Haven't played much of it lately since I was trying other decks but it should still be going strong with the nerfs. I'm excited to try the upcoming miniset
Absolutely love this. Got me interested in Ranked Standard after 6+ years of other gamemodes. This deck got me really hyped again.
In Classic mode im around plat 5 and in BG's im 6500 (for skill reference). Even though that's not high I still have 14-1 with this deck (starting at bronze 10). Surprised me, but ofc it'll even out somewhere and at that point i'll have to learn my opponents / meta better.
I recommend playing around with the deck and following comment suggestions. I swapped in 2 shadowsteps myself
This deck got me to diamond 4 this season from reset at 22-6. Unfortunately now I am seeing a lot of frost DK and DH, which are the worst matchups for this deck and any deck IMO. I am currently 23-10 d4. Fun deck for sure, will give it 10 more games to see if it's legend viable.
Good luck man! Yeah, I agree Frost Deathknight and Demon Hunter are unfavorable but with the right mulligan, you can even out the matchup. Pozzik is really good against Demonhunter and the new DK nerfs help
I really like this deck, and I wish I the meta isn't what it was right now but unfortunately it is. There is too much mindless aggression going on and if you don't get a beatboxer, party animal or a combo of your 1 drops/breakdance/shadow early on you lose. And, even if you do get those cards it's almost a coin flip. The deck is great and refreshing; it's unfortunate that other classes are super cancerous right now, more so than I've ever seen since 2014. I even teched zilliax into this get to try to get some pull backs with it and life steal - doesn't matter. If we start seeing less UD Priest, any DH, and Frost DK then this deck would be amazing. There's just too many of those right now at d5+.
For clarity here is what I am talking about (I don't know how to reply with an image of deck tracker):
Priest Loss 15 min ago, DH Loss 28 min ago, Warrior Win 34 min ago, DH Win 44 min ago, DK Loss 54 min ago, DK Win 1 hour ago, DK Win 1 hour ago, DH Loss 22 hours ago, Priest Win 22 hours ago
That's 5-4 and those DK wins I top decked and played immaculately, it usually doesn't go like that
I really like how the list looks right now @MediumKahunnah and i believe its very close to perfect 30. I'm wondering how you feel the deck without Shadowstep because honestly i haven't played without that it just feels really smooth and fits well the deck gameplan, right.
I dont think Cult Neophyte is as abuseble in this list although it can sometimes save you against AoE and steal a Win just like that so i can see its merit, also Zilliax doens't feel as strong as before, it's kinda hard to say that because he was one of my favorite card back in the day i played a ton of Odd mech Rogue and he was key for that deck haha but yeah i dont think he is strong enough nowadays but i could be wrong tho...
I would say -1 Cult Neophyte -1 Zilliax +2 Shadowstep and inside E.T.C band -1Smothering Starfish for +1 Sunfury Clergy.
Anyways, good job with the deck update and everything man this is a blast to play, i missed playing old school tempo Rogue, the deck feels smooth to play and its very enjoyable to pilot. Cant wait to see the MC Blingtron buff next week!
PS: Sylvanas, the Accused is absolutely savage here , i love it!
GLHF.
I wonder if you play mistake, shadowstep, play mistake would it be 2 random minion bands?
The problem with Mistake is that he mess up with Cutlass Courier draw, you dont want to draw him ever from that, as for Shadowstep you have better targets to use step, your amalgam band will be most of the time at least 5+ bonus effects since there is so many tribal minions in the deck. a vanilla 1/3 minion doens't stand a chance in current hearthstone unless you have a really good reason to play that... totem shaman for example desperate needs that one drop, naga mage because of siren etc.
I'll try shadowstep out, I've considered it before in previous versions but I was always against it for the reduction of tempo it can bring if you don't have a good target for it. With the current list it should be fine but I firmly believe that Cult Neophyte is good against most of the current meta as a one of so I keep that card around. I also forgot to update the E.T.C list because I have been running Sunfury Clergy for a little while now, whoops. Thanks again for the insight and I'm looking forward to how the deck performs after the upcoming nerfs and buffs! (Blingtron getting a buff is cool)
Yeah you were right Shadowstep feels amazing haha
Love this deck. Randomly got through amalgam of the deep a Metrognome, I curved it out so good I thought it could even find a slot. What do you think?
Sometimes it does the job from discover but its definely not worth the slot.
I don't think there's enough mech support but it sounds ok. Dunno what to slot out for it, most of the draw in the deck can get the job done like cutlass Courier or the amalgams
Really fun and interactive deck, that I did not see a huge amount of success with, just yet, but I think it's because I'm still figuring it out. Blood DK seems to be the hardest matchup for me, obviously. Thanks for the list! Hopefully it can thrive after the upcoming balance patch!
My only suggestion for the current list: I run Pozzik, Audio Engineer instead of Nerubian Vizier. Most games I didn't feel the need for the spells it provided, it was quite tricky to trigger it, and missing just a single undead isn't a big deal I think. Pozzik on the other is just an insane tempo play, which this deck shouldn't sleep on! Coining it out turn 3 and buffing it with Rowdy Fan sometimes just wins games on the spot, and on top of that it summons Mechs which you can magnetize on.
Thanks for the suggestion! I tried Pozzik, Audio Engineer really early on and I didn't see the value in it. It definitely helps with matchups like Demon Hunter and Miracle Rogue where you need them to waste Mana dealing with it. I'll make sure to credit you for it.
It surely is matchup dependent but I've seen some decent success with it! It generetas an early threat, which I felt is a key tool for this deck, as if you can't beat control early on, you'll not beat it. Thanks for the add and the credit!😁
I've been running MC Blingtron in the Vizier/Menace slot (also still running the 2x Fogsails although I haven't tried Neophyte).
MC feels really good.
EDIT: just saw where MC was added to the deck.
