Deck Description:
This deck is a different take on Priest Undead synergy in the new Lich King expansion. The idea is to cheat out Undead threats on the board with summon and res effects on cards like Flesh Behemoth, Bonecaller, High Cultist Basaleph and Amulet of Undying, and complement them with Undead synergy cards like Undying Allies, Grave Digging, Shadow Word: Undeath and Invincible, overwhelming your opponent into submission in classic Big Priest fashion.
There is plenty of sustain on the Undead cards themselves, with taunt, lifesteal, AOE damage and big creature removal on a stick.
Overall, this is a reasonably competitive deck for the competitive meta. It's not a T1 deck and definitely has weaknesses (spell-based decks, big minion counters like Objection and Freezing Trap, OTKs if they can sneak by your hand-disruption, very fast aggro/tempo decks like Implock). Play this deck if you're looking for:
- A flavorful priest deck that makes heavy use of the new Lich King expansion cards (18 Lich King cards).
- A non-aggro shadow deck.
- A fun deck that's different and can surprise your opponents on ladder.
Mulligan:
In general, try to hit your low-mana cost cards in your opening hand, though you might want to keep cards like Undying Disciple if you know you're up against aggro, Tenacious San'layn if you know you're up against a face-damage deck, or Plaguespreader if you know you're up against a slow deck with a minion finisher.
Big Combos:
- Undying Allies + Tenacious San'layn or Plaguespreader into High Cultist Basaleph the following turn for a resummon (or double resummon if you manage to kill off the reborn one too).
- Undying Allies+Flesh Behemoth to draw and summon a copy of two big Undying threats. Terrific way to get your board loaded off of two cards.
- Lor'themar Theron + Flesh Behemoth to double your big minion's stats in your deck and then cheat them out when the behemoth dies.
- Plaguespreader, Undying Disciple, Bonecaller and Flesh Behemoth + Xyrella, the Devout to get a massive turn of boardwipe, draw, summons and hand disruption.
Update: Currently climbed up to Diamond 4 with this list (on a winstreak, mainly assisted by a lot of aggro and death knight matchups). May possibly sub in some Shadow Word: Ruin if I encounter many rogues, but otherwise, keeping the list stable as I climb the rest of the way to legend.
been playing some games without the hero power 2 dmg. because its a lots of spells to give up for a 2 dmg. ping
is it only a theme thing that you use that card or early game minion dmg? but it opens up a lot of removal to play in normal mode.
You're welcome to try it without Benedictus, but I have found the 2 dmg ping crucial to stopping certain decks in Diamond (Imp warlock, token Druid, etc.). Without it, it's more difficult to keep board control early, in my experience.
Version 4.0 Changes (currently climbing mid-Diamond)
Out:
+ 2x Far Watch Post Reason: Not great if drawn late.
+ 2x Cathedral of Atonement Reason: It's a solid card, but I found better use for the slot.
+ 1x Blackwater Behemoth Reason: Again, good card and may swap back in if needed, but too slow and not an Undead.
In:
+ 2x Shadow Word: Devour Reason: Complements our needle and allows for clears against early wide boards. May swap this out for Ruin if there are a lot of rogue/druid matchups.
+ 2x Spirit Guide Reason: An undead taunt which draws shadow spells on death, and can draw Mi'da if you got him killed and in your deck.
+ 1x Mi'da, Pure Light Reason: Adds healing to the deck, and combines with Spirit Guide.
Version 3.5 Changes
Out:
- 2x Twilight Deceptor Reason: Feels clunky. Too slow of a play in this deck most of the time.
- 2x Identity Theft Reason: Swapped out for card draw.
- 1x Shadow Word: Ruin Reason: Sits dead in the hand a lot.
In:
+ 2x Far Watch Post Reason: Druid.
+ 2x Cathedral of Atonement Reason: Need plaguespreaders to be more impactful so opponent doesn't just ignore them. Also, card-draw.
+ 1x Blackwater Behemoth Reason: Hunter,
Version 3.0 Changes
Out:
- 2x Venomous Scorpid Reason: The priest spell discover pool has a lot of garbage spells, and everyone seems to deal with scorpid too easily in diamond.
- 1x Sire Denathrius Reason: post-nerf Denathrius doesn't do much for us anymore.
In:
+ 2x Identity Theft Reason: Seeing a lot of druid lately, which theft is good against. Also provides an additional shadow spell for our shadow spell synergies.
+ 1x Shadow Word: Ruin Reason: Deals with rogue and bless priest generating massive boards. Also provides an additional shadow spell for our shadow spell synergies.
did putt ID back in and take the scorps out?
Feel free to swap for ID if you like - I am finding more use from the scorps so far so I'm keeping them for now.
Heads-up: trying out some changes to the list to make it a bit less passive in the early game and introduce some hand disruption against meta cards like Shockspitter and Sire Denathrius.
Version 2.0 Changes
Out:
- 2x Shatterskin Gargoyle Reason: Random damage feels a bit unreliable.
- 2x Identity Theft Reason: being greedy with Identity Theft isn't really in this deck's gameplan. Also, against Death Knights, we often hit corpse cards that we don't really want and limit our discover pool a lot. Swapping out for a more active 3-drop in the early game.
In:
+ 2x Venomous Scorpid Reason: Gives us something more to play early game, and can potentially hit heal cards to keep us alive or powerful non-shadow board clears to deal with troublesome enemy boards.
+ 2x Plaguespreader Reason: While this is technically not a "big" undead, hand disruption is premium right now because folks are running creatures in the meta that can win the game out-of-hand like Shockspitter, Sire Denathrius, Astalor, the Flamebringer, Vexallus etc. Transforming them into Plaguespreaders helps you, and having your own minions transformed back into Plaguespreaders doesn't feel too bad since you have undead synergy in your deck.
very fun deck and i dont have astalor and theron. replaced them with 2 mind eaters.
and it still work, mostly death knight so far.
Pretty fun deck so far. Not sure on power level, but makes use of undead synergy quite well.
