... unless you shuffle duplicates into your deck. (Really, be careful about that.)
This is sort of a work in progress; I'm looking for fun, grindy games, particularly vs control warrior. Below is a game where I take a warrior to fatigue. [UPDATE: Mission accomplished; I've had a ton of fun with the deck, and I want to thank you all who upvoted. This is now the thirdsecond-most popular deck I've posted on Hearthpwn. I hope you have as much fun with it as I have.] [FURTHER UPDATE: Elementalcore featured the deck, with some changes, and posted a video Youtube, so check that out, too.]
Mulligan for Beaststalker Tavish (and Reno Jackson, against aggressive opponents); there are few enough damage spells in the deck that you probably won't get the quest reward on line until late in the game. Flightmaster Dungar and Archdruid Naralex are good to buy you time and find some answers for mid-to-late game threats. I like to coin out Naralex vs DH and hunter, to give me two chances to generate Ysera Awakens to answer their Drek'Thar.
Other than that, look for cheap damage spells and Candleshot. If the matchup will be a slow one, Harpoon Gun on turn three, into Ambassador Faelin on turn four sets up a very strong mid-game.
There are a number of useful combinations with Twinbow Terrorcoil -- not just Piercing Shot, but Deadly Shot, Marked Shot, Tame Beast(Rank 1), and Tracking -- but the big late game value bomb, that gives your Tavish hero power gas for days, is with Tidestone of Golganneth.
Sir Finley, Sea Guide can be used to dig for a timely Tavish or Reno. There are some fine points to playing Finley; you can tailor your hand a bit to arrange the new bottom three cards, which can then be dredged with the Harpoon Gun. But mostly, just get Tavish on line.
Another combination that is occasionally possible is Mo'arg Forgefiend and Improved Emergency Maneuvers for 24 health in taunts, and 24 armor.
If Tavish is the most important card in the deck, Dragonbane Shot is probably the second most important. Don't waste the shot on a non-honorable kill, unless you absolutely have to. The Shot can absolutely carry you in late game with Tavish's hero power.
Hey, look at me with 47 life going into the Kazakusan end game. Will it be enough? I won't spoil the ending. If you have questions about choices in the game, I'll answer in the comments.
Any thought about not running Brann Bronzebeard?
The first iteration of the deck included Brann, but he felt more greedy than necessary.
Interesting, I definitely want to try the deck but I think I'll try working Brann in there at first. Him with Mutanus is just really good.
No doubt. Let us know how it goes, an what other changes you make.
Wow, well done Gnorf. The explanation was very informative, and the Muligan suggestions were spot on. A couple of things about this deck that make it more fun to play is one, I almost always get Tavish before the Quest takes the hero power to 0 cost, unlike most Hunter decks that will take your hero power to 0 cost before turn 6. Two, the Armor and Reno healing allow you to withstand some early damage and set up for your Tavish onslaught. I didn't have Kodobane, but as much as I miss that card draw, I found the Rat King to be excellent...one thing's for sure, with Tavish you'll constantly revive the Rat King, unless a stupid Priest silences him. Lol
Oh, and I make sure not to play Smothering Starfish while Rat King is alive.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I wondered if Rat King would be good value; I think I'll try it out.
Your mention of Kodobane also reminds me that my hand is often too full to draw 3 (or 4 with the Tidestone combo) without milling, so there might even be a case for including traditional "hand" cards, like Twilight Drake or Goldshire Gnoll. Spice Bread Baker might be an alternative to Dungar, or Forgefiend, if you wanted to lower the curve a bit.
A lot of the fun of the deck for me is just trying cards I normally wouldn't play. I never played Spammy Arcanist, (or Defile), but I'm really liking it in the deck.
Great. We need more fun deck like this!
Replacement for hydra
Anything, really. If you wanted a third beast, I could make a case for Springpaw, Plated Beetle, Rustrot Viper, The Rat King, Mountain Bear, depending on what kind of match-ups you have most commonly.
I do love Devouring Swarm and Doggie Biscuit to give rush to my minions and sometimes double-up on them, like Venomous Scorpid. Removal and value.
Just about anything with the "discover" keyword. Entrapped Sorceress, Vulpera Scoundrel, School Teacher (though it generates a battlecry, not a spell)... and Southsea Scoundrel might be particularly fun.
This is an amazing deck I miss like 3 or 4 cards replaced them but man I love it
Just tried it and I love it ! TY
Thanks for the note. :-) I've had a lot of fun with it, and I'll probably continue to try to improve it with upcoming expansions.
Not easy to handle. It is really satisfying ! Tremendous wr so far.
