This month has a heavy amount of Secret Mage and other aggressive decks being played. Oddly I have only played one Reno Priest, all other priest matches have been the reanimator variant. I tried to build a deck that can effectively counter most matches I am encountering the most. This list tries to gain a lot of armor and counter some plays.
Kobold Stickyfinger will make Kingsbane rogue concede on the spot.
Chief Inspector is really useful against Secret mage as the only odd counter to them.
Brann Bronzebeard + Coldlight Oracle will usually cause slower decks to burn a lot of cards. This can cause win conditions to fizzle.
Nice deck,I run a similar version and it's doing decently well. I have a couple of questions though:
How do you deal with big priest? You seem to only have brawls and Barov as mass removal (flurry can help but removing your armor vs them can backfire) and I don't know if that's enough to stop the full boards of 7/7 that resummon themselfes, expecially with no transform effects , sylas or any other way to pollute their res pool
Have you considered supercollider? That is REALLY good in that matchup and it can also shut down a lot of aggro/midrange decks
Are you sure acolyte is needed? Coldlight can act as a good enough draw engine that doesn't fatigue you faster than the opponent (which, with a deck like this, is a serious consideration vs control decks) and giving aggressive decks some cards shouldn't be an issue for this deck specifically
I suppose rattlegore is there to try to apply pressure but...how do you deal with it getting stolen? Or is that such a rare thing that it doesn't matter/is worth the risk
I call it a meta counter because for me the meta is filled with Secret Mage, Kingsbane Rogue, and other random aggressive decks. To this end I built the list around having the highest odds of beating these decks, usually through shear life gain. With that said any control or combo match up is going to be a very low win percentage for this deck. You can usually win against Reno priest due to the amount of armor you can gain, however big priest is probably worst match up. My best luck against them has been getting a Brann + Coldlight combo when they have a full hand.
After playing around 100 games with the deck this month, I got to the point where anytime I am matched against a priest I wait to see if they are Reno or Big. If they are Big I just concede. It's not worth the 15-20 min game for a <50% change to win.
I have since gone with the recommendation below and removed one acolyte for an Archivist, although to be fair I haven't played her once. So she is simply a contingency plan. And Rattlegore is a big threat to help close out a game. I haven't encountered any situations where it was stolen. Most aggro match ups are over before turn 9, so it mostly gets played against Secret Mages. Reno Priest will sometimes polymorph it.
Usually people say that more board clears help vs Priest, but that's a hideous lie. What helps is a couple of cards that summon minions on their side. I just took out Barov and a Flurry for 2 Terrorguard Escapee and an acolyte for a Muck Hunter and there you have it. Hell, you can even put Tinkmaster Overspark if you have him.
removed one acolyte of pain and replaced it with archivist, since we go into fatigue very often.
It's a fair replacement if you do find this happening. Most games for me end before I get that far since aggro decks run out of steam. But control can take awhile if they believe they can chip through your health pool.
