True control is finally back on Priest's menu.
With the recent addition of Palm Reading and Hysteria, I believe Odd Priest has finally gotten enough support to make an impact on the metagame. With a good spread of matchups against notable decks such as Dark Glare Warlock, Secret Mage, Big Priest and Cubelock/Renolock I found the Raza Priest matchup to be the most difficult as we have to rely on hitting their Spawn of Shadows + Seance in one turn with Mindrender Illucia.
This is an underplayed architype that is similar to Odd Warrior in its ability to consistently sustain against the fast decks of wild using strong removal and constant life gain through the powerful hero power that Baku the Mooneater provides us. Unlike Odd Warrior, we have the resources to power through decks like Big Priest/Cubelock and stop combo decks with Mindrender Illucia while also having the upper hand in control matchups thanks to Archbishop Benedictus allowing us to stay ahead in fatigue against cards like Tickatus and King Togwaggle combos.
I look forward to the direction this architype leads to in the future and am excited to continue improving it.
An Explanation of Power Word: Glory
I genuinely think Power Word: Glory is a sleeper "removal" card in priest decks now that Hysteria exists, at least in a non highlander control architype like this one. It's essentially a 1 mana "remove a minion" spell that sets up Hysteria or Mass Hysteria into later turns by keeping it on the board and to give us burst healing. Making it a flexible removal spell that later heals for 4 or potentially more. The card could also just be used to set up a combo of massive burst healing with Wave of Apathy + Power Word: Glory + Hysteria, clearing the board and healing massive amounts.
An Explanation of Omega Medic (Cut For power Word Glory)
While playing the deck I found that while Renew and Zilliax combined with our hero power provide excellent sustain, I was still looking for an odd costed restoration card similar to Greater Healing Potion to close out some matches as sometimes 4-7 healing in one turn wasn't always enough to get out of reach near the end of some games or after swingy turns from the opponent. I considered Sandhoof Waterbearer for a while but really disliked the idea of it being a 5 mana 5-5 do nothing proactive as a heal 5 when we already heal 4 with our hero power. The 10 mana crystal requirement might be intimidating, but this deck truly does well in surviving until then as games go well past turn 10 quite consistently. In play testing, Omega Medics heal 10 really felt like a psudo Reno Jackson combined with our hero power, and it being a minion allows us to push for the board while getting past things like Counterspell. I find that the flexibility of the card's cost allowing us to play it on a turn with AOE such as Psychic Scream makes it an excellent choice, and I plan to continue running the card as my little Reno Jackson (until we get more solid restoration cards like Renew in this deck).
An interesting premise of being able to play actual control decks again, but it will never work as long as I keep facing C'Thun, the Shattered, or pretty much any combo deck. And boy are those prevalent in wild.
This looks super interesting! If I can ever get my hands on some of the legendaries in a non-painful way, I’d love to try something like this (Missing Lyra and Dragon Soul currently.)
Lyra the Sunshard and Dragon Soul are more of an experiment right now, they aren't necessary and the deck plays fine without them. I just love the alternate game plans they offer. Palm Reading is just insane and enables so many cards to work that would otherwise be bad (such as those two). Some options to try in their slots are Kobold Stickyfinger, Brann Bronzebeard, Deathlord (Honestly not a huge fan of Deathlord right now), Sphere of Sapience, or maybe you could cut the Coldlight Oracles and try to make a dragon package work, which I've been wanting to do with Cleric of Scales and Drakonid Operative.
I've also just been experimenting with a bunch of different cards, one of my favorites right now is Fortune Teller. I ended up dropping this as a 5 mana 10-10 against pirate warrior then magnetized with Zilliax to instantly win the game haha, I'm not saying a card like Fortune Teller is meant for the deck, but I think experimenting with cards we would otherwise overlook is something this deck can benefit from. For example I really think Power Word: Glory is seriously strong in this deck as a removal/restoration spell that sets up our Hysteria and Mass Hysteria, if I never took the risk to try it, it would have never seen the light of day, and that's why I'm choosing to give Lyra the Sunshard and Dragon Soul a chance. Anyways let me know how it goes! It's been preforming awesome on ladder, I had a buddy pilot it to legend in two days from bronze 10 and I'm about to hit it myself, Raza priest is really the only poor matchup.
