Been having decent success with this deck. Going to get as much use out of the highlander package before it rotates.
I'm having fun with it, too. Pretty good results against aggro and slow decks alike, depending on what you mulligan for and what you draw.
This deck features a relatively low curve and a lot of early game options to keep yourself alive but still a few key high cost cards for value in the late game. I decided to cut a lot of the dragon synergy that Highlander Mage usually plays and it has been fine.
Trick Totem and Deck of Lunacy are flex spots in my opinion. I like them both because I enjoy a bit of random, but you could replace them for cards of your choice. The value you get from lunacy can be very helpful. Depending on the matchup, you may want to consider not playing lunacy and seek out your C'thun pieces instead.
EDIT: Decided to axe the Trick Totem in favour of a Doomsayer. Against a number of board states, he has been more reliable. Against aggro, if they sink damage into Doomsayer instead of your face, that's still a win in my books.
Plese Update Bro.
Hey, I appreciate your interest. Unfortunately, many of these cards that made highlander mage great are now moved to wild (this was made before rotation), and I prefer to play standard. I have a few different standard mage decks I'm experimenting with at the moment.
If you'd like a good wild deck similar to this one, you can search for "reno mage" and I'm sure you can find something to your liking :)
What a deck! So sick of the quick burn ones, was looking for a good Highlander mage and this it
I seem to always have the answers I need when I need, or I can find them.
However * I did take the advice of commentators and removed the deck of lunacy for the archmage vargoth,
archmage can double the totem's spell or give you 4 secrets with corrupted ring toss, which has saved me with the paladins and locks.
Hey, thanks for the comment. :)
I also agree, actually, that since experimenting with this list more, Deck of Lunacy is more likely to mess up the highlander cards than provide greater value.
Will consider what to replace it with... since I don't have Vargoth I may try something else. But as I said, definitely flex spots, anyway.
Deck of Lunacy because you like some randomness? :) wand thief, prime, portal, jandice, keywarden, etc. not enough randomness? Mage is random just like rogue.
Still not sure about Cthun, the spells are not that great and costly.
I think I'm a little looney, so I play to my strengths ;)
C'thun sort of just feels like a good backup plan against other control decks, since a lot of these cards are fairly reactive.
I suppose you could use Alexstrasza like the previous builds did, instead. Try to stick a board and then snipe their health to 15 and hit face.
Nice, I like expensive highlander decks. I haven't played Deck of Lunacy yet, but wouldn't it screw up C'Thun, the Shattered spells? Wouldn't it also have a chance of killing your highlander cards?
I guess 5 mana 8 cost spells are probably pretty solid value anyway.
Hey there, thanks for the comment!
I am actually still on the fence with this card in this deck for the very reasons that you said. Usually I like it for matchups when I don't believe I will need to use C'thun to win the game. For example, against most aggro decks. Against control decks, you will likely just not want to play Deck of Lunacy and look for the pieces as your win condition.
And yes, sometimes Deck of Lunacy will give you duplicate spells, so it's a bit of anti-synergy there with the highlander package.
Depending on how the game has played out and what the board state looks like, you'll need to make a decision to play it or not.
If you play Potion of Illusion you could consider swapping in Archmage Vargoth and Mask of C'Thun
It gives you an OTK chance (also strong with Eye of C'Thun and Deck of Lunacy)
Hey, thanks for the comment. :)
I agree that Vargoth could be fun in this deck. I actually don't have him, so I didn't bother trying it. But it certainly could work.
