This by far the most successful Token DH deck I've played (and I've played a lot). It carried me all the way to legend two seasons in a row!
This token deck is more mid-range orientated than most DH token decks. The idea is to trade your tokens in the early game and using your cheap removal to keep enemy minions off of the board, then in the mid-game, combine your tokens with Parade Leader, Knife Juggler and Wrathscale Naga to deal with bigger threats, and Renowned Performer, Insatiable Felhound and Fel Guardians to slow the opponent down.
Feast of Souls and Skull of Gul'dan should help you from running out of cards.
Felscream Blast and Throw Glaive are both useful in combination with your illidari cards, as they can help deal the last bits of damage to each enemy minion, but both cards can also be used to kill your own minions when you really need to (to trigger Wrathscale Naga or get a bigger Feast of Souls or Nethrandamus).
Against aggro decks, don't be afraid to drop Parade Leader or Knife Juggler on curve. Slowing down your opponent's early game is a lot more important than saving them for a big turn later. Your mid and late game will likely be stronger than theirs anyway. Always trade your non-taunt tokens, and don't over-commit your taunts. If you already have a Renowned Performer (or its tokens) on the board, for example, consider keeping Fel Guardians in hand in case of a board clear.
Against slower decks, you will want to hold onto your minions and removal as long as you feasibly can, to get the most value out of them. Ideally, you want to save up for big turns when your opponent plays out a lot of stats. At this point you will want to play out a Parade Leader or Wrathscale Naga, and then one of your token cards, which should be able to deal with most threats and leave you with something your opponent has to deal with. If you have a Wrathscale Naga and tokens left on the board after the opponent's minions are cleared, try and use Felscream Blast and Throw Glaive to kill off your other (non-taunt) tokens to get the most out of your Wrathscale Naga before it is killed.
Update: I decided to add Zai, the Incredible back into the deck. Yogg-Saron, Master of Fate was proving to be underwhelming in this deck (it only won me a handful of games out of hundreds), but there was still a need for more late-game punch. Zai, the Incredible allows you to copy key cards such as Nethrandamus, Wrathscale Naga, and Expendable Performers, which allow the deck to have more staying power against slower decks. It can also be used to copy Skull of Gul'dan, but I would generally only suggest that if dropping Zai on curve, and if the Skull is to the left of your hand. Against aggro, Fel Guardians, Renowned Performer, and Felscream Blast are all decent targets for duplication, too.
I also swapped out Umberwing for Insatiable Felhound. While Umberwing has more synergy with the deck in general, it was generally underwhelming in this deck. The lack of rush or taunt made the tokens a lot less effective than other minions, and against aggro you don't want to be using your face to clear minions if at all possible, which made the weapon itself be of little value. Insatiable Felhound, on the other hand, is great to slow down those aggro decks even more, giving you more chance to get to the mid and late game where you have the advantage. The curve of the deck is also high enough that corrupting it is relatively easy, at which point the lifesteal can make a big difference.
Currently testing out replacing 1 copy of Command the Illidari (the least useful of the Illidari cards) with an Animated Broomstick. The broomstick can help in the early game against aggro by letting you make favorable trades with your 2-drops, but is also helpful later to either let Fel Guardians join a Wrathscale combo, or to make Nethrandamus more immediately impactful.
Looking forward to your next update
Do you think cthun would slow the deck down?
At the time you posted this, I believe C'Thun, the Shattered would have been a bad pick for this deck, but with the recent change in the meta, I think he may be worth it. I'm currently trying it out (along with a few other changes) and have fairly good results so far. I'll update the decklist when I have more data!
Finally! A token DH deck that looks fun! As soon as I manage to pull/craft Expendable Performers and Zai, I’m trying this one out. Thank you!
Hey, just wanted to drop in and say this deck is lots of fun. Usually!
I made a token DH deck based off your original list and have been really enjoying it.
I'm just curious, how much mileage do you usually get out of Feast of Souls? I've found that I often don't get a good chance to use it as my opponent is usually wise to my game plan after they see the first Coordinated Strike and they know to clear off tokens.
Right now I'm using Wandmaker, Mo'arg Artificer and Eye Beam instead of Parade Leader, Feast of Souls and Demon Companion and it has been doing fairly well.
I think when it comes to certain matchups, for example Soul DH, it's really important to have a good chunk of healing available, because for the combo you need to usually wait until at least turn 6 and get a good skull discount before you can do anything crazy. And you know how fast they like to hit your face!
But that's just my two cents! Cheers!
I'm glad to hear you are enjoying the deck!
I actually get quite a lot of mileage out of Feast of Souls. Particularly in matchups such as Warrior and Priest, but also Hunter to an extent. You need to keep in mind that this isn't an aggro deck (I like to think of it as mid-range). Your early game is slow and mainly designed to slow the opponent down. Once you reach the mid-game, this is where Feast of Souls really shines, as it allows you to get ahead in cards, which then allows you to happily commit your other enablers to start dominating the game.
I agree it is unlikely to be as useful against Aggro/Soul DH (simply because you will most likely be dead before the card advantage matters), so I can understand if you want to swap it out if you are only playing against that (although there are many other cards in this deck that would also apply to).
I definitely wouldn't take out Parade Leader. It's a key component of how the deck works. If you have it early, you can simply drop it as 2-cost minion that the opponent has to deal with (ie, slowing them down). And it makes sure your token cards scale strongly into the mid/late game. I would drop Knife Juggler before Parade Leader.
Regarding Demon Companion: I agree it is not vital to the deck, and I'm actually currently testing the deck with Hench-Clan Hogsteed in its place, and I think it is working well (another card to clear early minions, plus it works with all the token payoff cards for a little extra punch), although using Eye Beam in its place could also work.
Hey again, thanks for the reply!
I appreciate your advice. I will put Parade Leader back in and try Feast of Souls again. I mean, it's a token synergy card, it should be in the deck.
Through my experimenting, it really feels like this deck is not easy to play. I often find myself struggling to decide if I should just drop tokens on the board without anything to attack, or wait and combo it. And then if the opponent does not put any minions on the board, should I cash in a Wrathscale Naga and kill my own tokens, or wait another turn... it's quite tricky.
Maybe that's what makes this deck fun, though. It's not braindead aggro, and there are multiple avenues to combo for the win.
Yeah, it's definitely not easy to play. As I mentioned in the deck description, I've played a lot of Token DH, so a lot of those choices have become almost second nature to me. But there is a fine line between using a card now without synergy in order to stop the opponent snowballing, or holding onto it in order to get the most value.
Regarding Wrathscale Naga: I would say that cashing in on it is almost always the correct play. The main exception would be if you have several taunts and don't expect the opponent to be able to kill your Naga without having to attack through all of them, but that isn't a common scenario.
Hey, im having a ton of fun with this deck and im winning aswell :D awesome
This deck is awesome, my favourite so far. I don’t usually play DH cause I hate the soul share crap, but this wow! What a refreshing take on DH! Great job!
I was playing Soul DH from day 1 of Scholomance release (I even had a deck list posted here for it before Scholomance was released) right up until everyone else realised it was good. Then I got bored with it. lol
But Token DH has always been my favorite DH deck :)
OMG. lol... I had my opponent BM'ing me with emotes the entire game. Then bam I beat him with Yogg and all his greatness.
Crazy game for my first game!!!
1 for 1 :)
Also.. Glaive time :)
OK, I might not be winning every game but omg this is fun lol
Yeah, the meta is all over the place at the moment, so some days I'm up against a lot of good matchups, and others I'm against mainly bad ones. When the meta finally settles, we will know if this deck is truly good. Either way, it's a lot of fun! :)
Hell ye, this is exactly the type of deck i was looking around for.
Winning about 70% of games, and I'm having a blast playing it.
