Just hit legend with this tempo/small spell mage deck! It has strong matchups vs Pala and Rogue while also being able to defeat druids. I feel like this deck is reasonably easy to pick up, while still offering a lot of interesting decision making!
I know winrates with very small sample sizes are a bait, but this deck feels solid against the ladder meta right now, so i wanted to share it with you guys! (sry for the clickbait)
Mulligan tips & gameplan: (will add more details if you guys are interested)
- Hard mulligan for Lab Partner and Primordial Studies, keep Cram Session if you have either of them.
- Keep Firebrand versus Pala (dont let them stick minions to the board), Druid (kills their 5/4 stealth) and Aggro Decks
- Picking up Counterspell from Magic Trick will often save your live against Druid.
- Don't make the mistake and be too greedy for value in matchups that are not value oriented! Sometimes a Sorcerer's Apprentice or Evocation for only 2 cards can pay off immensely - prioritize your curve and mana usage!
- Regarding Primordial Studies: most of the time you'll want to pick the cheapest options - Lab Partner or Astromancer Solarian to fill your mana curve and empower your small spells. Don't get too greedy on value in tempo matchups!
When in doubt remember GM Zalae's words: "tempo good"!
Depending on what decks you are facing, it might be a good idea to put in a Frostbolt (this card is good vs Weapon Aggro) or Mirror Image instead of Violet Spellwing (this card is good vs Rogue). Brain Freeze is also a bit flexible, in some matchups a replacement might be stronger.
A lot of players are starting to run Cobalt Spellkin in these kinds of tempo mage decks. In some matchups this is probably stronger than Jandice Barov.
For card substitutions also check out the comments!
Edit: I have had better results vs faster decks after subbing in Wandmaker.

Is this deck still usable ?
Fun deck!
What changes do you recommend with the recent nerfs of Evocation and Astromancer Solarian? Just crafted a bunch of cards to play this, and didn't expect it to last forever, but the timing of these nerfs is really pushing it.
i think both cards are still extremely strong, and worth running. the deck just got a bit weaker in general.
but the two mana solarian is still a great tempo card, the prime form can still win games (albeit 2 turns later) and evocation is still an extremely powerful mid-lategame tool, even though it's early game potential has been crippled.
while Evocation is still very good, the biggest problem about the nerf is, you cant pick up additional copies of it via Wandmaker and Cobalt Spellkin
struggling against hunters alot with this
Made it to Legend for the first time using this deck. Thanks so much! My win rate was over 60 percent.
I'm lacking Jandice Barov & Chenvaala, any card that I can replace them for the time being?
i have already given very detailed thoughts on that in other comments below, check those out!
Consider Conjurer's Calling or Cobalt Spellkin. Jandice Barov is not essential to the deck, crafting Chenvaala is highly recommended.
Just went legend with this deck. Currently 4250 EU. Swapped Chenvaala with another Devolving Missiles because I found it often too slow against the fast hunter and paladin decks. Great fun with this.
congrats! thanks for sharing, maybe your suggestion can help people that are facing a lot of hunter matchups!
I was tempo legend last month. Now 9/10 games im faced vs hunters. And because they are so skilled players, with lots of thinking, card placement, mana management (hope u understood the sarcasm here)... tempo mage not working anymore. And bomb warriors also. Let me tell u, i get only hunters and bomb warriors now. Cant win.
Maybe ill try Questmage or even no minion mage is better vs them
Yeah this face deck meta bs is ruining the whole game for me. I like to think what my opponent has for cards and what my options are... now I just try to survive and they just go face.
Hi. I have only Evocation and I have dust to craft only 2 more legendaries. Wich ones should I craft? My thoughts, please tell me yours:
- Chenvaala: the best option i think, huge sinergy with the deck, but not so much for other mage decks.
- Astromancer Solarian: I know Prime could save you games, and Astromancer give you spell damage, but i dont know...
- Jandice Barov: strong, could be used in every mage deck, but seeing the numbers in http://offcurve.com/masterstour some tempo mage decks are cutting it.
- Ras Frostwhisper : strong, could be used in shaman decks.
Thanks!
To be honest i believe this deck won't work with just 2 legendarys.
if i were you i would prioritize crafting Ras Frostwhisper. this card feels extremely strong and versatile and is absolutely necessary vs aggro and zoo decks. remember it also converts your spell damage into face damage!
for the second choice i'd recommend you'd go with Astromancer Solarian. while Chenvaala is (as you correctly assessed) very strong in this specific deck, i think Solarian is still the more important choice. it's a card you'd want to run in almost any mage deck, and in this deck one of your best early drops, while also providing a powerful lategame turn.
edit: added two replays to show you how strong Solarian is in the early game :) here and here
Thank you for your answer, it confirm my instinct to craft Ras and Astromancer! And thanks for the replays has well!
Nice Deck, I dont have Ras yet so I replaced it with a calling, which is still a good value. I'm only at 61% winrate but the deck is fun to play.
Hard matchup against control war & priest though, most of the time they'll easily clean your board and without 2 callings it's hard to keep the pressure on. Works nice on stealth rogue (as long as you muli your spellwing or devolve) and yes you didnt match any hunters. Still had some wins against highlanders but face is quiet hard. As for druid, I agree it's a good deck, but still, not much you can do when they pop guardian animals on turn 4, maybe firebrand & devolve & pray for low rolls.
I like this Deck, but i think about playing with The Amazing Reno
For what would you replace it?
What you think about this card in this Deck?
this is a tempo deck! with this deck you'll usually want to end games around turn 7-10. if you come to the point where you need The Amazing Reno to survive, the game is usually lost anyways. in those stages of the game, if you loose board control, your only win condition is burst, while freezing the big threats- stalling the game with this card will not bring you closer to your win condition. so in most cases this is just a dead draw (because you dont have the mana to play it) that significantly weakens your game plan.
TL;DR i think The Amazing Reno would be a terrible card choice for the deck, if you want to run an expensive late game card (even though it might weaken your early draws) Pyroblast would make way more sense.
edit: i did not intend to sound harsh or rude. i just wanted to make clear I don't think this card would work in tempo mage.
Deck got farmed by Smorc hunter =\
Hey! Nice deck!
I can craft Evocation or Ras. Which one should i go for and what is a good sub for the other?
