Greetings Traveler !
My Name is Lipston and i am a casual player. This is my #1 Post at Hearthpwn, about a Deck, that brought me in August 2020 to Legend with a decent winrate.
Every month, i ask myself "what is the best Deck to Hit Legend"? At the beginning of the month, I had a crazy run with Aggro Demon Hunter to Dia 1 (3 stars). But than, i dropped and climbed, dropped and climbed.. and so on. I felt pretty mad, so i started playing many decks and ended up on Dia 5 (0 Stars)... tell me if you know that story ! ;-)
This Rouge Deck was just fun to play and the most important you can win vs. everything! Of course you have matchups that are better than others.
I played with this from D5 to Legend with more than 60% WR (after my changes from version 1.0 -> more details see below)
PROOF for Legend:
As you can see, on my Version 1.0 i sucked pretty hard, but i had ZERO knowledge about the Deck and what to Mulligan! I had a negative WR, so i changed something and than i started winning and winning like crazy .. the first games i did after the change, looked like this:
In my version 1.0 i had: Akama 2x Brain Freeze 2x Shifty Sophomore but after i played 9/12 with this i made the following changes:
- Akama changed for -> EVIL Miscreant
- 1x Brain Freeze changed for -> Questing Adventurer
- 1x Shifty Sophomore changed for -> Questing Adventurer
I cut Akama cause i didn´t feel that much impact in the game. In 21 games i was never able to drop Akama Prime.
A perfect card, that brought me many wins was Questing Adventurer. With some 1 Drops from EVIL Miscreant this card is just a punch in the face!
The Lackeys are also pretty good to build a big Edwin VanCleef.
In my first 57 games i played also with Infiltrator Lilian, but in my Last 7 Games where i played 6-1 i cut her out and added 1x Hooked Scimitar. Lilian is a great card, don´t get me wrong! Especially when you play vs. mid range or control decks, but she is really bad against aggro decks, because she is way to slow with 4 Mana. The weapon is really good to make some pressure or fight other minions.
So this Decklist here (Version 1.2) is the final cut what i would recommand to use!
I really wanna write a guide about this Deck! The thing is, i don´t wanna put in that much work into something that nobody cares.
So here is the Deal:
5 Likes -> Mulligan Guide10 Likes -> Matchup Guide (including Mulligan vs. every Class!)

We reached 5 likes, thank you! Here is the promised Mulligan Guide.
Best Start -> Spymistress / Secret Passage / Greyheart Sage
You always want a 1 Drop to start. Greyheart Sage on turn 3 is so powerful. You get 2 more cards and got a 3/3 body on the board.
Secret Passage is in my opinion a good card in your starting hand. Usually you don´t play this card before 4 Mana, but it is always good to have the option. I had so many games with a stealthed 1 drop on the board and didn´t get Greyheart Sage, so you can play Secret Passage on 4 and hope to get it, or play other 1 drops, or Wand Thief if you get lucky, you get also Shadowstep.
Alternative start: Wand Thief / Spymistress or Worgen Infiltrator / Backstab
Also good cards at the start: Backstab / Wand Thief / EVIL Miscreant (only with Backstab or Coin )

We reached 10 likes, thank you! Here is the promised Matchup Guide (including Mulligan vs. every Class!)
IMPORTANT for this DECK: This deck wins "mostly" with many minions on board or some heavy Questing Adventurer / Edwin VanCleef. You have to trade alot with this deck, cause you need board control. Only in few moments you can go all in and attack face. THIS IS NOT THE AGGRO-STEALTH-ROGUE. For me this Deck felt like Midrange.
Keep that in mind.
I will divide the matchups into 3 areas:
- Easy
- Medium
- Heavy
Demon Hunter (5-5) >Medium<
Most DH playing super aggro (minion based) or aggro soul. Bot matchups are really tough.
If you play vs. the minion version with Battlefiend than try to get board control and trade everything you can. The control version don´t have many minions that can trade your minions. Here you have to wreck his face and let him trade your minions away.
Mulligan: I can´t recommend a "specific" Mulligan for DH, but try to get minimum a 1 drop or Backstab to face Battlefiend.
Druid (5-1) >Easy<
Two matchups i met. Gibberling or Guardian (the most decks).
Let´s be honest! If Druid got his mega super hyper ramp and drops on turn 3 Guardian Animals it is mostly be over. But if that not happens, you have a really good spot in this matchup. Try to peak for cards like Questing Adventurer / Edwin VanCleef. Druids can´t deal with BIG Minions.
Mulligan: Try to get Questing Adventurer / 1 drops / Secret Passage / Wand Thief / Shadowstep to create something BIG!
Hunter (5-2) >Medium<
All Hunters i faced was "Face Hunters". The Maingoal is to trade his minions and win over the board. This is a really tough matchup.
Mulligan: 1 drops / Backstab / Wand Thief / Wand Thief / Greyheart Sage
Mage (5-4) >Medium<
For this Rogue Deck .. tough. My biggest trouble vs mages was, that they took all my big boys like Questing Adventurer / Edwin VanCleef with Devolving Missiles away. The Maingoal is to build a big board, what he can´t contest. You have to trade every spell damage minion away!
Mulligan: Spymistress / Secret Passage / Greyheart Sage
Paladin (8-3) >Easy<
Yes, you are really favored vs. PALADINS !!! You wanna win this matchup? TRADE EVERY Minion on the board, so he can´t buff and will lose soon. This is everything. No Minions -> No Buffs -> No Win (for Paladin). Be sure that you opening hand could deal with a Aldor Attendant.
Mulligan: Aim for Spymistress / Ashtongue Slayer / Greyheart Sage / Backstab
Priest (1-3) >Heavy<
This is by far your worst matchup. You are really not favored in this matchup cause the priest got to many removal for your low health minions on the board like Holy Nova / Breath of the Infinite. In this matchup it is also pretty important to trade and not run against Apotheosis
Mulligan: Try to peak for you best startSpymistress / Secret Passage / Greyheart Sage or alternative try to get a big Questing Adventurer early
Rogue (6-7) >Heavy<
Most of the rogues i met played super aggro with cards like Self-Sharpening Sword / Burrowing Scorpid / Wolfrider / Hooked Scimitar. Your maingoal here is to survive as long as you can. Trade everything you can, so that he must trade your minions to not get killed.
Mulligan: For this matchup you need a good start like (see above "best start"). But Wand Thief is also a super card. If you can Shadowstep her, you can get crazy cards like Devolving Missiles / Arcane Missiles or some secrets.
Shaman (0-0) >Easy?<
Funny thing, i didn´t met 1 Shaman in 100 games... but i really think we are in a better position, no matter if totem or highlander/control.
Mulligan: (see above "best start"). But i would try to get every time Backstab if you face Totem Shaman, to remove his totems early. Ashtongue Slayer cold also be helpful, to save your stealth minions from dying vs a 1/1 Totem.
Warlock (2-0) >Medium<
I didn´t meet many Warlocks. This warlocks i saw were "Zoo". I would say this matchup is pretty good winnable. Just think about board control. Get his minions away. He also can´t kill your big boys like Questing Adventurer / Edwin VanCleef.
Mulligan: I would recommend the the same start like Shaman.
Warrior (2-1) >Easy<
I also didn´t meet many Warrios. If they play "Bomb Warrior" you have a pretty easy game. Try to avoid Bladestorm and have with your big minions some 1 health minions on board to save the other. In this matchup i would not trade much. They don´t play taunts or many minions. Face is the way !
Mulligan: Try to peak for "best start" (see above). You really want a Secret Passage in your opening hand, cause you have to deal with many armor and need answers for this.
I really hope this will help you to get some ranks! :-)
If you have any questions don´t hestiate to ask me ! :)
replacement Vaancleef?
Deadly Poison
can i play without Vancleef?
just got from plat 5 to dia with 83% WR. Only lost against mage. Thanks dude.
You are welcome :)
update. 61% WR from plat 5 to dia 5.
with all due respect, that kinda decks kills the fun out of the game, i hate to be the "if u cant beat them join them" guy, so im quitting the game till they nerf the hell out of rogue or send Secret Passage to hall of shame :(
lol
Replacement for Jandice?
To be honest ... i think this card is really core in this deck. She won me many matches. You can generate so many good Minions out of this. So often i get a taunt to save me from lethal dmg. The thing is also, you can shadowstep her and play it again for 3 Mana .. this is pretty huge..
No she's definitely replaceable just add more burst damage
Why not play face rogue if thats how you feel imo.
I play exactly this list but -1 quest adventurer + 1 brain freeze, It's quite good imo, I started from https://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/1361387-sa-legend-83-tempo-rogue which I recommend reading, the playstyle (and cards) is not much different
I wouldn't say Warrior is an easy match. It is if you have a good start and they don't have answers the first few turns, but that's not always the case. My worst games were against priest, hunter and warrior
Against mage what i do is i try to make them think im aggro rogue (not playing non aggro rogue cards if i can), so they waste missiles to devolve my stealth minions. It happened a few times to me lol. Works against other decks too, they waste removals cause they think you are aggro
I thought about 2 x brain freeze too, but questing adventurer let me win so much games, i would not cut one out.
That is the thing about warrior, i really can´t even tell you how hard this matchup is. On Legend i faced exactly two .. pirat warriors and lost it :/
But good tipps for Mage. I´ll keep that in mind! ;-)
Are there any tips you can share regarding trading/when to keep minions stealthed, etc.? I seem to be having some trouble deciding at times because they usually just get removed after they go face once and leave stealth, or would it be worth it just to get the 2-3 face damage in?
Are there any specific matchups, you got problem with?
This Deck doesn´t work like the aggro stealth deck. You don´t have cards like Cold Blood what could give you a advantage with your minions to deal face dmg.
But to know when to trade and to go face is the key for winning with this deck.
I would let a stealthed minion not longer than 1 (maximum 2) turns in stealth without attacking.
I hope this will help you.
P.S.
I´ll write later a strategy + mulligan guide for all matchups. :)
When I'm up against more aggressive decks like face hunter and aggro rogue, they seem to be able to rush me down before I can rush them down and when I'm up against more control-style decks like mage and priest I almost always just seem to be short of lethal. The deck seems to be very good, I just can't seem to pilot it right for some reason lol
Thank you, I appreciate your reply/updates to the guide :)
Guide is online now! :)
Well, you picked all medium/heavy matchups i listed for this deck! ;-)
Aggro Rogues are after Priests by far the worst matchup (if they are super aggro). Face Hunter also pretty tough but more beatable than Aggro Rogues.
Just try vs. Rogue and Hunter to trade as much you can. Let them trade your minions away (if this is possible). Most of the Hunters will still go face (cause they are Face-Hunters... lol). :)
The thing is, with EVERY Deck, you have bad matchups, also here. My maingoal was, to find a good deck vs. annoying Druids and Paladins. And in both matchups, you are favored.
Keep it up and i hope you climb with this deck! :-)
