Legend (EU)
After aproximately 1 month playing almost exclusively Highlander Mage (reaching 1000 wins in the process, yay) and having tried all sorts of variations of deck Ive this one the most consistent and reliable against most of the decks out there.
It has a couple more draws with Bloodmage Thalnos and Starscryer and one more early removal with the Icicle (can work as card draw too). My biggest concern with most of the decks out there was running out of cards and not having enough early removal. These 3 additions were key to make the deck successful.
The point of the deck is very simple, you either clear all stuff against aggro or stall until you can pull the Archmage Antonidas (you can pull 3 fireballs consistently) in combination of the cheap spells + Alexstrasza (Thalnos and two fireballs > 14 damage. It beats all the slimy priests out there unless they get really damn lucky.
PS. You might notice that some of the "usual" cards are missing and for a good reason. 90% of the games the Tortollan Pilgrim was absolutely useless, and just a drawback against aggro. Same goes for Deep Freeze. They are just too expensive for what they end up doing most of the time. The extra secret is usually not useful either, as people play around it and you end up taking the damage to the face making it two wasted cards.
UPDATES!
Made some changes in the deck to match the somewhat slower meta after the July patch. Running Counterspell instead of Ice Barrier (this is still a bit of an experiment. Added also Deep Freeze to give the Dragoncaster more juice and Frizz Kindleroost, to allow the Dragonqueen to still be OP, and well we have a bunch of dragons so its always nice to have then discounted. Thinking about adding the Tortollan in the deck too.
Hi man, I've played a lot around with the deck with Twilight Drake, without and with both Twilight Drake and Manasaber. Twilight does very seldom anything productive and its just there because its a dragon. I always keep a dragon in hand if Im playing against any controlish deck, and Twilight Drake doesnt help much against aggro tbh as it sadly doesnt have taunt. So its just really not needed, I find. Manasaber allows you to "cheat" on the mana and doesnt get killed on the first turn so in my humble opinion, much better having it. Answering your question, I do not usually have problems activating the spells
Great deck but still strugle in early game vs agro such as DH or dragon Hunter.
Thanks! I know, its always gonna be hard agains ultra aggresive decks, thats why you have to Mulligan hard for any of the low cost cards in the deck, and this list contains a few more that the average highlander. Its very rare to not find one of the early removals before by turn 2/3. Its also important to keep Thalnos and Strascryer if you get them, even if just for the sole purpose of putting a body on board, stalling a bit and drawing.
not enough early game i think
If you feel like you need even more early game, Ive also played with Hench-Clan Hogsteed.
Pretty good against DH, to be played instead of Siamat for example.
Love it, I will try for legend with it next month, already have it this month. I don't care for the 3 damage secret either, I had success vs the 2 Demon Hunters I faced so far. Beat a Warrior with 60 armor pretty easily at fatigue. Only 1 loss to a Hunter in 5 games. 4-1
Cheers mate, glad it worked. I feel like this list just checks all the boxes. I just went through the usual highlander lists several times, looking at how often each of the cards had been underwhelming while playing and some are just there because they either look good on paper, or can just pull OP shit from time to time.
Appart from the extra secret and Ancient misteries, the Tortollan Pilgrim being 8 mana is simply to slow if you are carrying small spells and there is a risk of him not pulling the good ones. Same goes for Deep Freeze, its not horrible by any means, but unless you get it for free from the Dragoncaster its just two bodies for 8 mana and a freeze, too expensive against most of the decks you are gonna be facing.
The idea of chaning the Puzzle box for a Pyroblast has also crossed my mind. The box is for obvious not very reliable, but it can provide you with an extra life from time to time... I will have to try the switch.
