Hey everyone,
I know the timing for releasing this decklist isn't great given that a new expansion is about to be released, but the archetype should still be viable in the upcoming meta given the strength and simplicity of the win condition.
In any case, here is my take on a slight variant for face hunter on a budget. I recently made a new account and climbed from rank 16 to 5 with this in a few days of casual queing, so it seems face hunter can still be competitive in low to mid/high ranking.
Mulligan:
You generally want to mulligan hard for the toxic reinforcements, dwarven sharpshooter, and phase stalker. Animal companion is an excellent keep as well, particularly against control oriented decks like res priest. Otherwise nothing else in particular is worth holding, including the weapon.
Strategy:
smORC! In the early game you want to play your deathrattle minions over HP and force your opponent to deal with them. You'll derive at least an equal amount of damage from this as you would from HP and potentially more if your opponent can't deal with them immediately. Ideally you want to hold the owl for minions that can give you a particularly hard time like zilli or khartut, but this is situational. If you have a lot of damage on board and a taunt is in your way, owl is never a bad choice. Try to keep unleash as a finisher unless you absolutely need to clear the board to prevent yourself from dying; hopefully you'll be able to draw one of the timber wolves as well to maximize damage potentiality. In this vein, if you have unleash and timber wolves in hand sometimes it is better to allow your opponent to take control of the board and lure them into a false sense of security and consequently playing more minions. I've won a surprising amount of games this way, as players at lower to mid rank often forget to play around unleash. Also, try to hold off on using arcane shot on face until you need it for lethal, as it an excellent removal tool for pesky taunts or zilliax. Otherwise, just remember to play secrets strategically. I.e. if your opponent has a board full of minions with 2 or less health and one minion with more than 2, remember to play explosive BEFORE you play misdirection or freezing, that way you don't miss potential damage/removal. Similarly, always play freezing BEFORE you play misdirection: you get nothing out of redirecting damage if the minion in question just gets returned to your opponent's hand before it can do any damage.
This is a great deck for people that don't have a lot of dust/are relatively new to the game and want to hit rank 5 for optimal return on end of the month rewards. If you like the deck please upvote it so more people can see it! Best of luck and let me know how it works for you!
EDIT: Added 2 scrapshots to replace lifedrinker. Will experiment with this to see how it feels, jungle panther or even a bad luck albatross to tech against highlander would also be viable replacements.
What can replace lifedrinker now? I gave one pack tactics, any other options?
i replaced with 2 scrapshots but 2 jungle panthers should be fine as well if you don't have the dust to craft them.
scrap shot does actually really nice, I thought lack of beasts would be a problem but it isn't really since the buff isn't so important and even though there are only 5 beasts they still get buffed often somehow
How about playing Teron Gorefiend there? I think he combos nice with our deathrattle minions, maybe also with unleash because our opponent can't kill the hounds and they come back as 2/2 charge minions?
Teron is very good and a decent inclusion for this deck. There are actually a few cards that I might change, but this is a budget friendly decklist so I don't want to make it too expensive. I would suggest removing either a timber wolf or leper gnome if you have him. If it were me I think I would remove the leper gnome; timber wolf is excellent as a cheap kill command activator, unleash buffer and all around quick buff in a pinch when you have beasts on board and need that little bit of extra damage.
Bad Luck Albatross would also be a solid sub for one of the rotating Lifedrinkers. I don't see Highlander decks going anywhere and its beast synergy with a not terrible stat line for cost. Definitely wouldn't run two of them, but its a solid meta card that fits with your theme and curve.
Bad luck albatross certainly isn't a bad suggestion. The only issue i have with it is how easily it can be removed without having done any damage, which is an issue in face hunter. Jungle panther is harder to play around bc it has stealth, and scrapshot does 3 damage immediately while simultaneously buffing a beast in your hand and consequently making it more difficult to remove once it is played. Albatross is a good tech for highlander decks tho, so I think it could be a good choice if you're running into a lot of highlander players.
I gave you a +1 because it's a good deck. I however still feel dirty for playing.
I created a second FTP account to see how easy it would be to play now that there's a Free deck for new players and a free DH deck.
However, all new players start at a beginner rank 40. Meaning at MINIMUM you have to play 60 games to get out of the beginner levels.
With this deck, I went 71w and 10 L. And some of the losses could have been prevented. Face hunter is, and probably always will be, the cheapest deck for new players.
Edit: I also did it in under 16 hours.
Very nice man!
Thanks, great deck! How it can be improved, how do you think?
Thank you! There isn't a ton of room for improvement per se with this archetype, but if you have the dust I might suggest removing one timberwolf and adding a toxic reinforcements in its place. I've also seen some more recent variants using bloodmage thalnos and 2 rapid fires for spell damage lethal, which is interesting but I'm not sure if it's necessarily better. If you were to go that route I would take out one timberwolf and both leper gnomes. It's also worth noting that very soon lifedrinker will rotate out and I've suggested jungle panther as a replacement, altho scrapshot from the new expansion would also be viable.
A good deck for morons.
A downvote and a salty comment? Did someone playing face hunter do mean things to you? Lol
Yes. He stole my sweetroll. :(
this deck when played correctly is OP
Thanks, glad you're doing well with it!
Replacement for Lifedrinker? Disenchanted rotating cards.
Thank you for bringing this up, I completely forgot that lifedrinker was rotating out! After perusing my collection for cheap, low mana cost alternatives that have the potential to deliver similar damage output for a similar cost, the closest alternatives I could find were blackwald pixie and jungle panther. I would recommend jungle panther bc it activates kill command and synergizes well with with timber wolf and leokk.
I know this is a budget deck, but if cost weren't an issue would Dragonbane be a good add to this deck?
Dragonbane is a decent add. You don't typically see it in face hunter bc its damage has the potential to not go face and clearing the board isn't really a priority for face hunter, and it is relatively expensive from a mana perspective. With that said, now that leeroy has rotated out you could certainly take out one of the lifedrinkers and put it in and I don't think it would necessarily be a bad thing. Just a little more complicated to play if you're looking for lethal and your opponent has minions on the board.
EDIT: I completely forgot, but another commenter reminded me that lifedrinker is rotating out soon. If you still want to play this deck in the upcoming meta, I would recommend replacing lifedrinker with jungle panther once it does rotate out, or (as you suggested) one dragonbane and one panther, provided you have the dragonbane.
i dont see a reason to play him in this deck. after all, if the enemy's board is full, u most likely hit the wrong target and end up getting beat up instead...
