Highlander Big Spell Mage feat LPG + Rafaam
Refined following the nerf to LPG. Achieved Legend 6 during August season with original version, got Legend again during September season with new list :)
Is Tar creeper the only elemental in the deck? Strange to run Sandbinder, no?
And Zephyrs! XD
Ah good point, good point. I see the value. Unfortunately, I dont have Sandbinder.
Nor do I have meteor, kalygos, zola, barista, alanna, and LPG. Not sure what I should prioritize buying, or subbing in.
The Alanna payoff is a big reason to run this package, the natural replacement would be King Phaoris who's better in some ways and worse in others. Meteor and LPG can be replaced with some other spells that cost 5 or more mana like Blast Wave, Flame Lance, Pyroblast or Box of Yogg. Zola and Barista are there for extra value from your powerful minions, you could replace with Baleful Banker and Youthful Brewmaster. Kalygos lets you cheat out spells so I would replace with Naga Sand Witch.
Very nice looking list you’ve got there! Quick question though: what should I cut to make room for Frost Lich Jaina, Dirty Rat, and Skulking Geist? (Cards which I consider to be eternal staples/must-haves in any Reno Mage list)
I don't think any of those cards belong in this list but if you must then cut stuff like Stone Hill Defender, Manic Soulcaster and Alexstrasza,
Duly noted, but I’m rather curious about which meta you’re laddering with.
For me personally, the rank 4-5 meta I’m seeing is made up of Secret Mages, Combo Warlocks (Mechathun, Snip Snap, Treachery Mill), other Reno decks (mostly Renolocks), Mech Hunters, Mech Handbuff Paladins, Odd Rogue, Thief/Cutlass Rogue, Even Shamans, Evolve Shamans, Quest Shudderwock Shamans, (occasionally returning) Jade Druids, and (occasionally returning) Big Priests.
Do you mean to tell me that you laddered your way to Legend without the matchmaker ever pairing you against a single combo/OTK opponent along the way? (Or somehow still managed to beat combo/OTK regardless of your lack of dedicated combo disruption?)
Yeah combo decks are beatable with SMORC alone. This is the advantage of the LPG + Big Spell packages, it allows you to generate more threats in control matchups than a more defensive Reno mage build running say N'zoth would allow for.
nice
Decks are INSANELY dust expensive this expac
Really fun deck. Thanks for sharing. I think I'm likely to switch out Leyline Manipulator for a Skulking Geist, but otherwise will continue to play it as is!
Really cool deck! Thanks!
I've never been much of a Mage-player, but this one really caught me. I like the versatility and the tactical thinking needed to pilot it. I don't own Dragoncaller Alanna yet, so I put in Medivh. As pointed out earlier, he doesn't fit in perfectly, but has enough big-spell-synergy to work with.
Currently playing EU Servers, bouncing between 4 and 2. Though I think I got the general idea of the deck, there are still some aspects I'd like to hear your comments on:
- how to you deal with Big Priest? Without any Polymorph-effects on board, I find it quite hard to counter him. If he coins out Barnes on turn 3 into Y'Shaarj into "Name-your-favourite-Big-Minion", I don't see a real way to react. Even Zephrys doesn't help much, because the AI doesn't seem to get the essence of Big Priest. I always get options to kill the enemy minions, while silencing or polymorping them would be much better. So how's your matchup against those decks?
- another issue are early big threats in general. Played against some Hand-Buff Mech Paladin, who buffed a Flying Machine and just overran me on turn 4. Any plan on that? Or just "live with it"? As said before, I really miss some silencing (which I run in all my other decks).
So maybe you could share some of your experiences. Besides that, I'd really like to see some videos of your deck in action!
Hi Muddler, sorry for the late reply, glad you're enjoying the deck!
If Big Priest coins Barnes into Y'Shaarj that's near impossible for any deck to deal with unfortunately being the ultimate high roll for that deck.
Kazakus can fetch you 5 or 10 mana polymorph potions. I have had Hex and Polymorph offered from Zephrys as well, the trick is to play him with 4 mana left if possible to increase the chances that one of those two is offered.
Otherwise try to stay ahead on the board without committing too much, find that sweet spot of enough pressure to require a response and thereby stop the Big Priest from doing what they want while keeping back resources to retake the board the following turn after a clear.
Be aware that playing Power of Creation or an Alanna that summons more than 1 dragon if you suspect that the Priest will play Psychic Scream in response will turn off your singleton cards till you draw the duplicates from your deck.
The Eater of Secrets occupies a tech card slot in response to 42% of my match ups being mages. Feel free to swap him for Spellbreaker or Polymorph, though Polymorph weakens Dragon's Fury and Raven Familiar a little. Also Zephyrs can fetch silence, especially if played with 0 mana remaining. Zephyrs is really the go to card for all your needs when in a pickle, great versatility.
I don't stream but I have deck tracker recordings of my matches. Here's one against a Hand Buff Mech Paladin that high rolled :)
Awesome list.
Have you ever considered Medivh, the Guardian?
I have tried him for 10 or so games and he seems to be very consistently awesome. Granted, there is some anti-synergy with Kalecgos, but there are anough spells in the deck to just play these cards one at a time. He also works great with kazakus' (especially 10 mana) potions.
I did run Medivh in earlier versions :)
Cut him because like you said the deck has lots of ways to reduce the cost of spells between Kalecgos, Solia, Thaurissan, Sand Witch and Leyline Manipulator.
Cool that he's working for you though, what did you cut to put him in?
the deck loses to Mecha'thun 100% of times
EDIT: list of archetypes this deck loses to
Warlock: Mecha'thun and Big
Warrior: Pirate and Control
Rouge: odd Tempo, Pirates, Odd and Combo
Priest: Combo, Big and Reno
Mage: Burn and Secret
Paladin: sometimes odd Aggro
Hunter: Mech
basically, you have a good win rate vs board based deck since you have enough board clear that's why Druid, Zoo Warlock, and Shaman are somewhat of an easier matchup, you still need to draw Reno Jackson though
Odd Paladin in an exception since it can generate tokens from the Hero power
Hunter, on the other hand, can make big minions and the Hero Power is hard to overcome
Pirate Warrior, Pirate Rouge, and Burn Mage just burn you way too fast to keep up
Mecha'thun is just undefeatable
Big minions are just too big to be cleared out, you need tons of luck, and Reno Jackson us useless
most other control decks just overvalue you especially Warrior and Priest
IDK about the 82% win rate but the deck cant climb ladder or compete for high ranks
The card choices are so unusual, feels really weird to see all these cards together :D
As a Reno player since day 1, excited to try :)
Hope you enjoy the synergy :D
83% winrate my ass. This deck gets destroyed by ANY tempo deck in less than 6 turns. Only if you draw perfectly you might stand a chance. 6k dust wasted, thank you! <3
Yet the deck is now on HSReplay and out of 430 recorded matches sports a 69.1% winrate, currently the 2nd highest winrate deck from any class or format, only beaten by a variant of secret mage despite I'm sure lots of winnable matches being lost due to misplays since as I admitted it is not an easy deck to pilot.
