Hello there!
I'm Toffi and I've loved the Tesspionage decks in the Year of the Raven but I've seen it's popularity radically decline in RoS so I've tried to bring it back in order to bring some fun games that keep on changing for y'all!
This is a control-oriented deck that heavily relies on Spectral Cutlass and it's buffs like Deadly Poison & his buddy Captain Greenskin to save ya butt and even though there is an Aggro-meta right now you can survive and most often than not win if you play your cards right since you mostly play from behind anyway and try to win by sapping away their resources or just bonking their face when the opportunity exists.
The Mulligan
I won't go totally in-depth about it yet. Just keep in mind that Backstab, Blink Fox, EVIL Miscreant and Spectral Cutlass are commonly great cards for your opening hand.
That can change however depending on which class you're facing (For example: keeping Sap against Hunter or Paladin due to mechs or Fan of Knives against Shaman in the case of Murlocs)
Keeping cards that synergize with each other like Preperation +Raiding Party is also not bad. (This again may change depending on class so just use ya brain and weigh the options.)
The Gameplan
As stated before you're gonna get carried by the beauty that is Spectral Cutlass and the weapon buffs that go along with it. There are almost no situations where you use weapon buffs on anything other than your cutlass.
Your job is to get cards from other classes with the help of Blink Fox or Hench-Clan Burglar to keep your Cutlass up to heal yourself as much as you can and always get back to your feet after getting severly beat up!
I'm gonna do my best to explain how you can win against Control and Aggro since these are the most common at the moment and maybe I'll make a guide for every class individually later!
The most important part about this deck though is to have fun while you constantly adapt your gameplay given the random cards you generate
Against Aggro
Survive.
This deck has lots of removal options that will help ya stay afloat during the earlygame and you're gonna need 'em for the abundance of minions being thrown at you. Clear as many as you have to and try to keep the board contested as best as you can.
Pray to Ben Brode you'll get your cutlass and buffs early with the help of Raiding Party for instance and do not play Academic Espionage if you are behind in the game, (Unless you are a maniac that relies on miracle topdecks to save your butt)
Tess Greymane is also a realllllllllly niche card in the aggro matchup so just stick to your Blue Glowing Candy Pop with 6+ Attack to get by.
Using Toggwaggle's Scheme on cards like Zilliax or Captain Greenskin is not a bad idea depending on the state of the game.
Dont expect an easy win against aggro decks. It requires some luck and a lot of thinking ahead to reliably deal with face-goers and even then the matches tend to be pretty close
Against Control
This is where you get to have fun! The earlygame here isn't terribly important but try to keep the board contested like against aggro and get as much value as you can out of your cards.
Tempo plays like Coin + EVIL Miscreant are still valid so don't be too shy!
Be patient with your control tech: Tess Greymane Academic Espionage and don't play them too early. Especially Tess. She'll keep you fighting against even the tankiest of Control Warriors if you use Toggwaggle's Scheme on her and just summon a ridiculous amount of stuff turn after turn after turn.
Just try not to play weapons from other classes or you'll destroy your Cutlass after using Tess. (Speaking from experience)
But despite that your weapon isn't terribly important against Control. It's still nice to have it so try not to spam buffs on your Spectral Cutlass as soon as you have it and try to bait out their weapon removal unless you are in a real pinch. (But if there's a warrior there ain't a way to save your cutlass usually. They usually run 3 weapon removals)
Try burgling big value cards that will synergize well with Tess Greymane and never pick boardclears unless you have to. Big minions are also really nice to have so Tess can spam more and more damage on board.
Conclusion
So yeah, that's my attempt at making Tesspionage work in the current meta! I know that it isn't incredibly powerful but it's super fun to play and also a nice thinking exercise because every game is different from the last!
I also don't claim that I'm 100% right about everything I said here or that this version of the deck is the strongest that can exist.
And as a disclaimer: This deck would be way better in a control meta and currently relies on luck to some extent which doesn't make it incredibly competetive so don't craft all the cards here expecting to break through the ranks easily.
Please leave suggestions or questions in the comments and I'll try to answer/reply to the best of my abilities. (Card substitutions, reasons for cutting/choosing certain cards, general questions etc.)
Please take care and remember to have fun!

By the way here is a 32 round game against a dragon/control warrior which showcases some elements that I've talked about here: https://hsreplay.net/replay/7SCo5rZQ7s84VopTQ6kiDe
Edit: I put in 1 Vanish, 1 Sap and 2 Gadgetzan Auctioneer because of Mechs and Conjurers Mages that fall apart easier due to this new addition. Pilfer and Walk the Plank were replaced due to this. Also the Auctioneers provide better carddraw than Sprint since the deck mostly consists of Spells. It also gives you a better way of drawing through yourAcademic Espionage cards + Preperation doesnt feel that awkward anymore!
Thank you all very very much for your suggestion and critizism that helped me make this deck better! I'll try to keep this deck as fun as possible while trying to make it completely competatively viable!
Edit 2:
Since Vanish is now in the Hall of Fame I decided to put a copy of Pilfer back into the deck because the revised card text allows you to give more durability to your Spectral Cutlass through Rouge matchups, is good for activating Gadgetzan Auctioneer and it's fun to play.
I would reccomend you add Fan of Knives when facing Zoolock, Murlock Shaman or Token Druid a lot though
Really enjoying this after playing cyclone giants all of last season which ended up a bit dull. You never know what you’re going to get stealing other classes cards but I’ve been lucky enough for it not to work out too badly all that often.
I was running a version with Tak Nozwhisker at the beginning of RoS with an Academic Espionage combo but it was a bit slow and the prep nerf slowed it further. This version is heaps better! Thanks a lot for posting it.
No problemo! I'm always glad to hear that people manage to have fun with my deck!
Mages are certianly annoying so maybe a Walk the Plank would be a consideration (but it doesn't perform too well against other classes). The best thing to do though is just try your best and keeping the fun win the game for yourself. Having a good time is the best result you can have.
On another note I've also been trying out Tak Nozwhisker and got the same result as you did. I am eager to try Myra's Unstable Element and I might as soon as my wallet allows it.
I'll keep the deck updated as long as possible and once again thank you very much for having fun with my deck!
Any replacement for Vanish now that it has been HOFed? I feel like that really hurt this deck in standard because Vansish was a pretty crucial card for some matchups. Thoughts?
I didn't actually need Vanish all that much surprisingly but I agree that it was neccesary in a few scenarios. I'm actually kind of sad they HoF it since control Rouges like us get punished for the sake of "class identity" (because bouncing back cards into your and your opponents hand is totally not like Rouges at all)
Anyhow if you play it smart then you can get by with the 2 Sap in your deck. If ya are facing a lot of Token Druids or zoolock then throw in a copy of Fan of Knives since it also gives a lil bit of card draw but I'll personally add a copy of Pilfer since it helps activate Gadgetzan Auctioneer and with its changed card text it will help you keep your cutlass up through Rouge mirrors! (also it's fun)
isn't Underbelly Fence a perfect card for this deck?
It was my first instinct aswell but I have soon come to the frightening conclusion that...it's not enough value. I have tried multiple times to make her work in the deck but she just doesnt do enough and sometimes just sits in my hand until I draw either Blink Fox or Hench-Clan Burglar.
Adding to that horrible calimity, 3 damage is really quite awkward. I mean most high-priority targets either have too much health (Mechs) or are Giants with 8 health which don't mix well with my even-damage spells (mostly 4 dmg) and one 3-attack minion.
All in all there are just too little ways to generate class cards for me in the earlygame and Underbelly Fence doesn't do enough to warrant her a spot in the deck over any other card currently.
Thank you very much for giving me that question though
I played tesspionange + cutlass before the raiding and prep nerf and even before rise of shadows and I have a deck and if you could would u check it out and if u see any flaws let me know
Of course! I'm gonna try to explain some weaknesses I found.
1. You try to do too much at once and are running a really greedy deck.
Heistbaron Togwaggle and one copy too much of Academic Espionage are prime offenders and restirct you a lot. Your only Lackey generator is EVIL Miscreant which means you have to hold onto at least 1 lackey to garuantee Togwaggles battlecry which doesn'T make you very flexible (I've tried something simmilar at the start of the expansion too).
2 Espionages are just overkill and in my experience you'll never get 8 mana to just shuffle cards into your deck. (Its fun though) You usually want to cast Espionage when you can garuantee to draw at least some of those cards pretty much right after you cast the spell which makes 2 copies to give you a better chance of drawing it a bad idea aswell.
I've made both of these mistakes aswell but I don't blame you for doing this since it seems lika a good idea at first
2. Too much combo, too little combo activators
Edvin VanCleef, 2x Cutthroat Buccaneer, 2x Raiding Party, 2x EVIL Miscreant and only 4 cards that cost 2 or under makes the deck really clunky. Activating those combos is hard and your curve in general is pretty heavy which isn'T very good against the abundance of Aggro in the meta.
Also Cutthroat Buccaneer is probably not worth putting it. At least for me, since I think you can get by with only having 3 weapon buffs. Otherwise you rely too much on your weapon and get destroyed by weapon removal.
3. Removals?
I only see 3 reactive removals in your deck: 2x Vendetta and 1x Fan of Knives which is not very good against, yet again, the aggro decks that slam down minions left and right. My deck has 10 removals for example which is simply neccessary against many of the decks out there.
It wouldn't be as drastic if you were a tempo or aggro deck aswell but seeing as you have a lot of lategame cards I assume you want to play a control deck.
So yeah, those were the 3 biggest problems I have with the deck. I hope it's still fun to play and you may or may not take my advice (I personally don't know if it's good advice though)
no very good advice I made a 2.0 with removal and less pirates I pretty sure this new deck will do better against aggro thanks
Also side note I love togs scheme but if i really need it I will discover it with a lackey
Glad I could help!
First of all thank you for the deck, i really enjoyed as an experienced rogue player. Altough i will have some suggestions, what about putting Edwin VanCleef instead of x1 Preparation ? After the nerf x2 prep seems useless to me.
Also Togwaggle's Scheme is a dead card in your hand %90 of the time, its only useful vs hard control decks, which arent too many in the current meta.
I love getting suggestions so thank you for giving me some!
Edvin VanCleef is actually really bad for this deck as you usually only play 1-2 cards per turn and the purpose of the deck isn't to go all in on tempo. I've tried him out though and my experience wasn't very swell.
Preperation is still quite a good card imo as you have many spells in your deck that can allow you to progress your board while still dealing with opposing minions. Also most of the spells cost 2 or under anyway. Also I like to use it in combination with Gadgetzan Auctioneer to draw 3-6 cards a turn.
And about Togwaggle's Scheme: It is not an optimal card, Far from it, correct. Unfortunately I have to run it. I can't reliably win by only having played Tess Greymane against a Control Warrior once since they can potentially clear the board 4+ times. In addition to that you can play it on high value minions such as Zilliax and Captain Greenskin aswell to help ya not die against those pesky aggressive decks.
Plus, having 14 Tess' in your deck is funny
I'm still very thankful for the reply and the suggestions!
Like your style of deck and your style of writing. you seem like a fun guy. +1
Aww my god, thank you so much <3. It may not sound genuine but this actually means a ton to me
What do you like to do with Togwaggle's Scheme ? Cycle Tess?
Yes, in my opinion it's necessary to have when you play against a heavy control deck. Having 12 Tess' in your deck after playing some huge bois is usually the thing to break them.
Other than that there are the options of shuffling more copies of Captain Greenskin or Zilliax into the deck when you are facing an aggro deck to either keep your Spectral Cutlass strong and sturdy or just have a bunch of Zilliax...which is hopefully self-explanitory.
The card doesnt feel super inpactful against aggro but it's almost a must against Control Warrior
This deck may not be amazing, but it sure is fun XD.
Where did I use Silence after Prep? I looked through it and I used Prep Sap and Prep Eviserate first of all. Second, I have been starting to playtest each deck at least 3 times before a video for the past couple after this one (I am stocking up before I go on vacation) and I think it makes the gameplay better because some other people were saying I made a lot of misplays especially on this deck (which I know I did just not the prep one).
Thanks for uploading a Thief Rogue deck! Spectral Cutlass is my favorite card in standard and I love trying new versions. I think this version might benefit from more removal, maybe add another Walk the Plank or even a Vanish to deal with buffed mechs and big mage.
If you’re interested, check out my crazy version of Thief Rogue, which is still my favorite version even if the win rate isn’t competitive.
