CHANGES
- -2 Acolyte of Pain
- - 2 Aldor Peacekeeper
- + Crystalsmith Kangor
- + Ysera
- +2 Equality
- Reason: Equality seems to be a nice tool for big mage or heavy shaman murlocs. I don't want to eliminate Acolyte of Pain entirely but at the moment card draw is not the problem here. Will do further testing and report back!
Hello everyone, I am starting to make the guide for this specific deck as we go. I will start talking about the importance of Mulligan into early / late game. Appreciate the kind feedback from everyone! Rock on Dragadins!
Mulligan
This part is quite important, some match ups are determined by this phase of the game while others play out with whatever Mulligan you get.
If your going against aggro, try to get Pyromancer, Cathedral Gargoyle and Lightforged Blessing.
If your going against control or mid-range decks, simply follow the normal take of this deck to get as many Dragons in hand to make the value of Dragon Speaker better.
AOE combos + Archmage Vargoth
- Pyromancer + Lightforged Blessing = Spirit Lash.
- Archmage Vargoth + Consecration = 4 damage to all enemies.
- Archmage Vargoth + Avenging Wrath = 16 damage randomly split among all enemies.
- Archmage Vargoth + Any Paladin Buff Spell + Only Friendly Minions on the field = Massive Value!
- Dragonmaw Scorcher + Equality or Shrink Ray from Firetree Witchdoctor can be massive depending on your opponents deck type.
Archivist Elysiana
Speaking about Archivist Elysiana, if you have her early game, try to stall as much as possible until your opponent has about 10 or less cards in deck to offset you getting to fatigue faster than them. Depending on the games current state, get high value cards from Archivist Elysiana, remember you get two copies of each so you always have 20% chance of drawing the card you want. She isn't a game deciding factor but can easily force your opponent to forfeit if their deck type has no reload after drawing.
Health Control
This deck wins you late game quite effectively, if you can suppress your opponents cards and answer per play, your late game is guaranteed to overrun them. Dragon Speaker is not a great temp play, but the body generated (3/5) is capable of taking several hits to be cleared. You can always Call to Adventure on turn 6 to get a decent drop and since the minion you pull is slightly buffed (+2/+2), landing it on Cathedral Gargoyle is always wonderful! Remember to use Lightforged Blessing whenever you feel lethal is imminent by your opponent. It has Twinspell, so you will have copies of it for late game if needed.
Two things about this deck. I find that Firetree Witchdoctor is a bad temptation. You must be holding a dragon (which is likely, but still possibly a fail) to discover a spell? A spell you could have just added in and not have a random choice of 3. All this for a 2/2 body is a complete waste in my eyes. The only value it can have is to get you another equality or concentration.
Second, If you have High Priest Thekal , Nozari, and Lightforged Blessing, why wouldn't you fill out the package with the minions that benefitt the most from healing? Zandalari Templar
Archmage Vargoth is completely useless in the current deck version. Maybe swapping it for like a Tirion or some other Dragon synergy card could be better.
I kind of want to agree with you, I only use him with Consecration or Avenge and that happens once every 4-5 matches. Do you think Barista Lynchen is better than Tirion here?
I found swapping out Archivist Elysiana for Barista Lynchen to be pretty effective, if Dragon Speaker survives to turn 6, play her and you've got a 3rd to play, giving a +9/+9 to dragons in total, played right and you have two 13/13 4 costs sitting pretty in your hand. And that's if you only catch him in it, let alone your other battlecries!
I like your approach, though I am afraid that against other control decks I come across, large Health doesn't matter when they have cheap removals. Even when I have 4-5 massively buffed Dragons, they simply get sniped right after. For Archivist Elysiana she actually won me 4-5 games just by herself, everytime I play her the options bring me back into the game if I am losing or against Bomb Warrior, discards all the bombs. Let me know how Barista Lynchen is working for you, she seems like a great card with these Battlecry minions.
Missing
Crystalsmith Kangor.
What should I get instead??
You can actually keep an Aldor Peacekeeper instead of Crystalsmith Kangor. This replacement is not as important as the others, but does help the early game by having Kangor.
I've been tinkering around with the idea of Dragon Paladin myself. It's a little different from the list here (mostly because I don't have every card needed), but I like some of the ideas you've got going on. I'll definitely give this one a try.
One minor error I noticed in your guide though is in your "Health Control" section. Isn't the card Call to Arms supposed to be Call to Adventure? That made me do a double take.
Haha, thanks for the laugh, I guess that card is still within my memories :( It was too perfect...
Awesome deck! I've been playing a few variants of dragon pally and this one seems to work the best for me :)
That's wonderful to hear, always excited to hear other fellow Paladin lovers push the Dragon Archetype!
8+8 = 16 , not 18 xD ( about double avenging wrath )
Yah your right haha, I added the two damage from Archmage for some odd reason.
What it's a deck without zilliax... that's rare xD
I know haha, there is quite alot going on to be honest. You can actually try zilliax in place of one acolyte of pain. Card draw seems to be fine without it, still need further testing though.
that's true i try it later today atm i am 7-1 with this deck ^^
what do you think on adding ysera for the Archivist Elisyiana and dream combo?
I actually don't have Ysera but I did see her wining games in late control match ups. I was going to craft her but I want to wait just a little to see if the meta settles from rush decks into more mid-range. By all means do use her if you have and report back your results, I am curious to see what you find!
ok i try it for you ^^ but i don't really know what to cut out for the start i cut out 1 consecration because with eq plus pyro you should have enough clear but testing will show me if it was right
Try to cut Aldor Peacekeeper, are you using him as much at the moment? Consecration is quite important to bring the game back into your favor.
tried it and cutting aldor was better xD
ysera is really good in the heavy control match up but it sucks against aggro :/ its an optional tech if the meta goes more into control
