Come in and Warm your Frozen Boots by the Fire!

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Gunnolf, and I am originally from the Land Down Under a.k.a. Australia. I am an avid gamer that has acquired a real passion for card games, which originated from my humble beginnings as a Yu-Gi-Oh collector and eventually grew from my dabbling in Cardfight Vanguard and Buddyfight, until we reached the game we know as Hearthstone.

I've played Hearthstone since the days of classic, with multiple accounts on both EU and NA servers. Despite having reached the Rank of Legend and my own personal mentality of equating 'having fun' with 'winning', I am not really a fan of meta power-grinding & net-decking, not that there is anything wrong with that. Therefore, I enjoy thinking about new, cool and fun deck ideas that push boundaries while also allowing you to win and those are what I want to share with you guys every-time I post a decklist.

I have presently become a contributing writer to WILDHS and will be posting articles there on a semi-regular basis, regarding deck-archetypes the status of the meta as well as how to get the most fun out of this game even if you aren't a big spender. If any of this sounds interesting, then I highly recommend that you check out of the website, as the writers and the owner himself are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet with great in-game knowledge (link to be website can be found HERE). You can also follow me on Twitter for latest updates.

If you genuinely like my content and would like to see me produce more of it, then please consider supporting me on Patreon. This is by no means necessary but it will definitely help me out in the long run. Thanks for Reading ^^

Deck Introduction

Hey guys I'm back with another super cool deck. Normally I don't post back-to-back decklists like this but they both follow a similar theme so it was easy to get used to the playstyle much quicker, resulting in less wasted time. Following the success of my OTK Giants Mage from Rise of Shadows, I bring to you the Reno Mage variant and include two separate ways in which to build the deck, allowing you to tech for your meta and specific playstyle. Anyway, without anymore ado let's seriously get into the list, that took me days to perfect.

Card Choices and Deck-building Explained

In this section, I will explain some of the card choices I opted for and the reasoning as to why they were included over potential counter-parts.

1) Banana Buffoon: This is probably the most efficient way to to trigger the quest count since it provides two cheap spells.

2) Mukla, Tyrant of the Vale: As this is a reno deck, we sadly can't run two of the minion above. However, we don't have to when another card exists with the exact same effect.

3) The Curator: Irreplacable card in this list, in both iterations. It is the glue that holds the deck together, as it draws a draw engine, a way to complete the quest and even a combo piece.

4) Gluttonous Ooze: While it may be weird that a weapon tech is showing up among recommended choices, some form of weapon removal should definitely be included since it truly helps against rogue, mage and especially warlock.

At the present time, only a few cards have been listed but I will include more if questions pop-up within the comments section regarding substitutions and why other cards were included.)

Alternate Burn Variant

Now before I getting into explaining how the combo actually works, I wanted to showcase an alternate way to build the deck in terms of win condition. While I personally like the Giants variation more and sternly believe it performs more consistently overall, those pesky taunts can get in the way. So there is quite of bit of merit in fact to running the burn damage OTK variant.

-1x Brann Bronzebeard | +1x Ice Lance
-1x Arcane Giant | +1x Pyroblast

-1x Archmage Vargoth | +1x Fireball

Note that with the last exclusion, I personally did not feel that  Archmage Vargoth fit in very well with the Burn strategy, mostly because it chooses the targets randomly and I got Pyroblasted in the face more than once. Including him isn't wrong and you can always sub out another tech card for him. Remember that you don't need to hoard all of your burn damage. See how the game goes and expend as much as is necessary to stay alive.

The Combos Explained OTK/TTK
Giants & Burn

A) Giants OTK:
Assuming you have completed the quest before-hand you can carry out the quest using the following methods:

   - Archmage Vargoth + Time Warp + Arcane Giant -----(gain 2 free turns)---> Play Alexstrasza or other minions and spell and start piling on the damage.
   -
Kalecgos + Time Warp + Arcane Giant -----(gain 1 free turn)-----> Play Alexstrasza setting your opponent's life to 15. The latter two minions represent 12 damage on board and you can cover the missing 3 damage by casting Frostbolt, Forgotten Torch or Roaring Torch for free.

B) Burn OTK:
Assuming you have completed the quest before-hand you can carry out the quest using the following methods:

Kalecgos + Time Warp ----(gain a free turn)----> Pyroblast (for zero mana) + Fireball (4 mana) + Roaring Torch (3 mana) + Frostbolt (2 mana) + Ice Lance (1 mana)

Essentially the math works out to the following in terms of damage and mana cost:
- Mana: 0 (Pyroblast) + 4 (Fireball) + 3 (Roaring Torch) + 2 (Frostbolt) + 1 (Ice Lance
) = 10M
- Dmg: 10 (Pyroblast) + 6 (Fireball) + 6 (Roaring Torch) + 3 (Frostbolt) + 4 (Ice Lance) + 4 (Kalecgos) = 33D

Open the Waygate, Keep or Mulligan?

In certain circumstances and other quest decks, there is legitimate merit in mulliganing away the quest in order to increase your odds of discovering anti-aggro tools to deal with aggressive opponents. Unlike the other pure combo variant that I posted a while ago, with this deck you can follow that strategy as the combo in and of itself is not your only win condition. Therefore, you can certainly throw it back into the deck to find more anti-aggro tools. Furthermore, as the quest is most completed using Banannas, you can always complete it late in the game. Just save your spells until then.

Tech Cards

So this deck actually has very few flexible slots. However, there are still 2-3 you can take advantage of if you're stuck in a particular pocket meta. Essentially, the flex slots are those of Brann Bronzebeard, Doomsayer and Gluttonous Ooze.

The most common tech cards that would be useful in the present meta are Tinkmaster Overspark and Polymorph: Boar. Essentally, they are transformation options to deal with a potential influx of Big Priests.

However, there are plenty of additional options to help you against other archetypes. Some examples are Potion of Polymorph and Dirty Rat as anti-combo tech and Explosive Sheep as anti-aggro tech.

Use your imagination and you're sure to do well. ^^

Cheaper Alternate Inclusions

Let it never be said that I don't think og F2P players when I make my decks. Ok I realise this section may be a bit of a meme but nonetheless, there are certain cards that can more or less fullfill the functions of their more expensive counterparts. Essentially:

-1x Zilliax | +1x Sludge Belcher or (if you don't have Naxxramas) +1x Rotten Applebaum
-1x Mukla, Tyrant of the Vale | +1x Cabalist Tome or +1x Etheral Conjurer
-1x Magic Trick and/or -1x Primordial Glyph | +1x Tome of Intellect and/or +1x Ray of Frost
-1x Bloodmage Thalnos | +1x Loot Hoarder

Of course there are several more changes you can mage to the list to make it a tad cheaper without affecting the overall quality, but the savings wouldn't be as much as the ones mentioned above i.e. donwgrading from a legendary to a common.

Othe Gunnolf Decks

While I am still working on fresh new decks utilising the  new cards from the RiseofShadows expansion, here are a couple of combo decks with updated guides and lists that do in fact use new cards to boost their strategy.

Author's Notes

This was truly a lot of fun to make and a great way to combine two new legendaries with a flavor from Un'goro. The deck does require a significant amount of practice but if you are in any way acquanted with Exodia or Freeze Mage, then this deck should not present any problem to you. As always, make sure to take your time to get accustomed to the deck and don't get bunckled down into winning excluisvely with the OTK.

I enjoy deck-building a multitude of interesting decks that are both entertaining and Legend viable (with some odd Free-to-Play lists mixed in). So if you like this deck (or anyone of my other ones) consider leaving a thumbs up, as it really helps in the long run! :)

Thank you guys for all your support and if you have any suggestions, let me know.
