New expansion, new meta, new offmeta paladin deck to beat the meta :)
DISCLAIMER: different version / minion setup (15.4.2019) - reached LEGEND today :)
due to the recent shift in the meta ( less warriors, more rogues / token druid, hunter , zoolock ) I had to make some changes and reinclude Concecration + Mountaing Giants instead of Big Bad Archmage. My older version which shine vs different metas can be found at the bottom of the guide.
Why Mountain Giants vs Big Bad Archmade? Big Bad Archmage are dead cards in your hand until turn10. Mountain giants cost 0 mana via prismatic lens and due to our expensive mana curve we have enough cards in hand to play him on turn 5/6 while the rest of our minions need 7+ mana. Overall he is just more flexible vs aggro/midrange/control because he enters the game earlier than Big Bad ARchmage and he wins more duels! especially vs other giants which see play in aggro decks ( sea giant) and control ( mountain giant)
Mysterious Big Paladin
The goal of my decklist is similar to the good old big priest decks which used only 1x 4 drop (Barnes) + big minions. Instead of Barnes I use Archmage Vagoth who can recast Prismatic Lens / Duel! for the big tempo swings and even the cheaper spells like Desperate Measures and Call to Adventure can generate insane value.
Early match plan
Truesilver Champion + Mysterious Blade + Secrets + Time Out / Flash of Light are used to survive until turn 4/5 and Call to Adventure on turn3 can guarantee us a turn4 4/8 Archmage Vagoth in many of our games and even after drawing Archmage Vagoth it is a nice card for drawing a buffed Zilliax.
Midgame/Lategame
Prismatic Lens is an insane card if you build your deck around it. Cheap spells + expensive minions is one way to get value out of this card and therfor I decided to play only 4+ mana minions and cheap spells/weapons to handle the early game, risky but since Equality costs 4 I wanted to try a deck without Pyromancer. Prismatlic lens always hits some great minions, especially when Archmage Vargoth is already on board/ in your hand and sometimes it is not as bad as it looks if some of your cheap spells get more expensive because every spell redcuses Shirvallah's mana cost.
The minions of my choice are sticky, generate value at end of turn or are have rush/lifegain as instant response to threatening board states.
Tirion Fordring: is one of the best minions in the game. His weapon helps us to push for lethal damage or control the board, great Redemption target.
Ysera: was always an autoinclude in the good old control paladin days and I am happy to play her again. Her end of turn trigger + body stats are great in combination with Duel! or Prismatic Lens discount
Big Bad Archmage: He survives most of the Duels! and needs to be answered asap or you generate too much value. There are hardly any bad 6 drops in the current standard format.
Batterhead at the first glance this card looks bad but he is a great minion vs aggro/midrange and functions as a board clear. In combination with Lightforged Blessing he can be used as huge life gain.
Shirvallah, the Tiger and Zilliax help to regain life and control the board state. Shirvallah + Prismatic Lens results in a 0 mana Shirvallah early on!Archivist Elysiana is the worst target for Duel! but her extra cards are crucial in some matchups because once we start tutoring via Duel! / Prismatic Lens we run out of cards really fast. (update: due to the lack of warrior we don'T need to outgirnd dr.boom, not playing her in our list makes our Duel! much more better)Baron Geddon is only in the deck for Lifelink + aniti aggro/midrange. great card :)Oondasta: great body + rush, can pull out Shirvallah or Amani War Bear for extra rush minions.
Amani War Bear: only in this decklist because of Oondasta. decent blocker/rush minions, survives most of the Duel! fights and can attack an additional time.
Try it out, sadly it is rly expensive to craft but it is fun to play and wins :)

Thanks for this awesome deck! I can't stop winning... from rank 15 to rank 9 without a single loss #aggrokiller
This is a very inconsistent deck, You must've played thousands of matches to get to Legend.
i played 121 games overall to reach legend. wr was between 60-75% depending on the day and meta i was facing.
maybe your meta looks different than mine while i was climbing to legend or you just make some different plays or bad rng via duel! / prismatic lens. there are different version of big paladin @hsreplay with 50%+ winrate and several thousand of games tracked -> the deck is good enough to climb ranks
ps: i made this deck to have fun and not to break the meta. reaching legend was a welcomed side effect but most people i know are playing the deck because it is fun and not to reach legend the fastest way
I can only agree. I have 68% winrate from rank 16 -> 5. I've never climbed that fast.
However i did add a few changes. Added hakkar and archivist for the fun of it (Archivist very rarely gets picked in duel anyway). Removed truesilver. Truesilver has no value if you have a decent starting hand imo. Even removed 1 batterhead to get another lightforged blessing. Don't think 2 batterheads are needed tbh if you have the option of putting a heal on a big minion.
I love this deck, but I'm considering swapping out those boring mountain giants.
Very nice deck i like it alot!
What can i replace oondasta and war bears with?
Damaged Stegetron + Kangor's Endless Army or just other big rush minions like the new 9/9 rush neutral or Big Bad Archmage or the 3/8 Gilneas rush/divine shield minion. depends on the meta you are faicng if you need more taunts or rush minions or value generating minions.
The only trouble with this deck is that it doesn't curve out well. More often than not you're dead before you can really do anything. Duel works best with big, bad minions ... I get that .. but the lack of much to put out in the early rounds means you lose tempo far too often with this deck.
A few things, first, I'd take Lightforged Blessing × 2 before Flash of Light × 1. Flash of Light is there for draw only. With all your rush minions, a second Lightforged Blessing has was more healability (and draw).
Second, and I haven't tested, so I'll try later, but I am considering replacing Truesilver Champion × 2 with Burly Shovelfist × 2. Trying to analyze the need for a 4th and 5th weapon versus the upside of two more HUGE rushers.
There are scenarios where you already have one of your other 3 weapons equipped and Truesilver just sits in your hand. The value of another huge rusher that can be pulled via a duel (and can give you a 2 for 1), can be discounted significantly and while it's a dead card if drawn til 9, it affects the board instantly.
Another change is replacing Ysera × 1 (I know) with Countess Ashmore × 1. Countess clearly is a better dueler. She is a good card to play on turn as you have so many things to duel with if you added Burly Shovelfist × 2 and she pulls one of your 9 rushers, your 1 death rattle and one of your two lifestealers. Obviously Ysera's card generation is good, but it may be good to pull more of your cards, especially after you have dueled twice already.
Really nice deck! Having lots of fun with it! :)
Why did you swap the Big Bad Archmages with the Mountain Giants? Imho the Archmages have a lot more value. I'm just curious, no offense ;)
Thanks alot!
Big Bad Archmage generates more value over time but are dead draws until turn10. mountain giants can be 0 mana via prismatic lens on turn4 and if you draw them during the game they will most likely be playable from turn5 onwards while other expensive cards need 7+ mana. giants win more duels especially after the rise of some controlish decks who run giants themself. giants kill elysiana / giants, the 4/8 lifelink elemental from big shaman and few other big minions where as Big Bad Archmag e might just die during the Duel! without giving value.
Mountian giant is in the end less risky and can be played more frequently in comparsion to big bad archmage which leads to more ocmebacks vs aggro/midrange due to lightforged blessings lifelink on mountain giant or going for lethal vs control few turns sooner.
I removed Ysera and both Big Bad Archmage, added one more Flash of Light and two Witchwood Grizzly. More combo with Oondasta and easier to win vs aggro imo.
good changes if you face atm more meta decks. i am already running a different version since days due my different meta @ legend , but maybe i should change the decklist above. big bad archmage is just too slow from hand in most of the games and therfor I play mountain giants who have great synergy with prismatic lens + lightforged blessing and handsize-discount due to unplayable hand-spells :)
nice idea. I gave it a try and craft 3 missing epics.
In my first 2 games i had khadgar mages and i learned that they can do the deck idea a thousand times better :)
khadgar mages are a taff matchup, one of the only ones were you need a slightly different decklist to force a win faster. just including 1-2 shrink rays would help a lot.
I added deathwing for fun.
First of all I love this deck so much. So much fun to play, and the insta concedes never get boring. One matchup I can never win is summon mage, as soon as they get their combo off I just lose. Any tips on how to beat it?
I love this deck, and I have messed around with other slight changes. The only one I would make is to replace Big Bad Archmage with Mountain Giant.
While I do enjoy what Big Bad Archmage brings, it is a dead draw until late game and sometimes loses Duels with other big minions like Leroy. Mountain Giant provides a better Dueler, but it's real value is when you draw him. There is so much draw and card creation, MG often costs very little when you don't have much of a play. In addition, he is almost always a 0 cost card when you pull him with [Prismatic Lens. Only downside is that he does make that spell cost 12, but that's the fun of the game!
funny that you made that change :)
i made a reddit post yesterday - > https://www.reddit.com/r/CompetitiveHS/comments/bdkjpq/big_duel_paladin_rank5_to_legend/ and the special decklist v3.0 in my hearthpwn post above is a mountian giant variant but i did not want to change the whole decklist without playing more games. you made the right call to change those minions
