Introduction:
With the new Hunter Legendary Vereesa Windrunner the possibility of a new Hunter archetype emerges. Malygos has always been the centre of OTK decks and with the release of '"Rise of Shadows" it looks like Hunter will get a chance to play a bit with that sweet spell damage.
For the time being this is still a theorycraft, though I would extensively work on adapting the decklist during the next few days once the Year of the Dragon begins.
Goal:
The main idea is to draw Jepetto Joybuzz either naturally or through Master's Call. Since the deck consists of only a few key minions most of the time it shouldn't be a problem to discover him. Once in hand Jepetto needs to draw one of the following combinations:
- Malygos + Vereesa Windrunner for +7 Spell damage after one attack with her weapon Thori'dal, the Stars' Fury
- Malygos + Alexstrasza for setting the opponents health to 15 and +5 Spell damage;
- Vereesa Windrunner + Alexstrasza for setting the opponents health to 15 and +2 Spell damage;
Additionally, you need to have in hand a combination of Arcane Shot, Rapid Fire and Bomb Toss according to the minions you have drawn through Jepetto Joybuzz.
If those conditions are satisfied, then with 10 mana you proceed to OTK your opponent through one of the three ideal combinations stated above.
Spell damage options combinations:
- With both Malygos and Vereesa Windrunner in play Arcane Shot and Bomb Toss deal 9 damage each, while Rapid Fire deals 8. The best case scenario here for 8 mana is dealing a total of 59 damage.
- With only Malygos in play Arcane Shot and Bomb Toss deal 7 damage each, while Rapid Fire deals 6. The best case scenario here for 8 mana is dealing a total of 45 damage.
- With only Vereesa Windrunner in play Arcane Shot and Bomb Toss deal 4 damage each, while Rapid Fire deals 3 (in this case you might need Alexstrasza). The best case scenario here for 8 mana is dealing a total of 24 damage.
Game Plan and Other Possible Cards:
For the moment I've stopped myself on a small secret package to help the deck through the early game with mid to late game support from Animal Companion, Unleash the Beast, Eaglehorn Bow and Unleash the Hounds. The main draw engine is Master's Call to fish out Jepetto Joybuzz and we have Zul'jin as a late game value engine and board refill.
I considered Witchwood Piper, Tracking and even a combination of 1-cost minions and the new epic Arcane Fletcher, though at least for the moment I decided against their inclusion because I believe they have a negative synergy with the goal of the deck and/or are a bit too unreliable (Especially in the case of Tracking which might discard a key combo piece. I also considered adding another Marked Shot or exchange it for Baited Arrow, though at the moment I'm not sure how useful they might turn out to be. This might change in the following weeks as I tweak the deck.
Overall, I think this deck has the potential to become viable and it has room for improvement. I don't believe it would be a top tier deck, though it might find it's place in the meta if not now, then maybe at a later point of the Year of the Dragon.
I'm looking forward to feedback and thanks for reading!
Change Log:
10/04/2019: I've been trying different versions of the deck all day and currently have a version with which I'm quite happy. It took me from rank 5 to the middle of rank 4 with a score of 15-9 (62% win rate). The deck needed card draw so I added 2x Tracking and removed one Master's Call since most of the times it was just sitting dead in my hand. Two copies of Secret Plan proved to be a flexible and useful addition to the deck while Marked Shot actually surprised me since I expected it to perform worse than it does. I found that the two copies of Bomb Toss were just not needed most times so I removed them, though it's still possible to add one for consistency.

I played a similar list in the brawl, but with less early game. And I did indeed have trouble against aggressive decks, but bomb warrior was super easy. Lost against tempo rogue, aggro hunter and silence priest. 7 wins, and only two of them really was using maylogos combo. Often opponents would take some damage during the game, and Vareesa´s bow + random damage was enough.
Couple of thoughts:
I found tracking to be awkward sometimes, because if you find any of the combo pieces you kind of have to take them, even though you don´t nessecarily want them until much later. If you are unlucky and see two pieces, you have to ditch one. Maybe cut one? Or are they really needed, and you just have to accept some variance? It was also a bit awkward when I wanted to play Zul´Jin and had played two trackings previously, and risked burning the combo pieces I still had in my deck.
I think I like one Eaglehorn bow, but I don´t think I´d want two. Against aggressive decks, it isn´t super great. And you often find Vareesa later on, so late game it loses a lot of value. You also can´t take too much face damage against aggressive decks, so other removal is often better. What do you think?
The worst weakness of the deck is when opponent´s get a big weapon going. This comes up a lot in this meta. You just look at their five power weapon with 3 charges, and you know you are dead in a couple of turns and can´t interact with it. I don´t know what to do about that, though...
Appreciate the feedback! The exact things have been going through my mind as well. I don't like the idea of tracking, especially when it basically nukes your deck once you play Zul'jin, though sometimes you don't really have the option, especially in a faster meta when you need more card draw. I also agree with the eaglehorn, though it comes useful when you need to interact with the board early on. I'm working my way through versions with 1 and 2 bows and so far I can't really decide which is better since the meta is changing. I have even considered adding a Harrison for the weapons and even though he might screw up the combo he at least deals with that threat and also draws cards.
Nice deck! I was just wondering.. If u draw malygos and vareesa befor jepetto, does it make you loose the game, or do you have another gameplan?
Another gameplay I use to alexstrasza setup to just burst them down if I draw malygos or vareesa. Another one is playing malygos when I know for sure my opponent has use almost all his removal. I do not know what the original creator does, but as another fellow hearthstone player that plays this deck, that's what I do.
That was helpful. Thanks!
