OVERVIEW
Prince Tempo Rogue has been my favorite viable Rogue class for a long time. With the announcement of the mana cost of Cold Blood moving to 2-cost from 1, Prince Rogue can no longer include Cold Blood, which I see in virtually every Tempo deck list. One might still get the effect from Crazed Chemist but the cost is much greater.
The top performing Tempo deck right now utilizes a pirate package, and so I incorporated a small Captain Hooktusk + Crew pack. The card is just good, board refill and deck thinning works well with Fal'dorei Strider as well.
This new Prince Tempo version takes advantage of Spirit of the Shark to get powerful effects from battlecry and combo minions:
Fire Fly adds 2 1-cost cards to assist with combos.
Prince Keleseth buffs the deck +2/+2, +4/+4 with Shadowstep combo
SI:7 Agent becomes Combo: Eviscerate.
Edwin VanCleef can become insanely huge with double trigger.
Elven Minstrel becomes: Combo: Sprint (essentially)
Fal'dorei Strider shuffles 6 4/4 Spooders.
Fungalmancer becomes: Give adjacent minions Blessing of Kings
Captain Hooktusk could potentially draw 5 Pirates with Rush.
Volcanosaur (which I removed but is worth mentioning) becomes a near-Galvadon.
Other synergistic cards that are not in this deck at the moment would include Saronite Chain Gang, Lifedrinker, Volcanosaur, Bonemare, Gurubashi Hypemon, Mind Control Tech, Seaforium Bomber, Myra Rotspring, Former Champ, Sonya Shadowdancer
1-2 tech cards would also be nice to include. I also see the Zilliax/ Corpsetaker/ Windfury Harpy or Stormwatcher combo in many deck lists. Fan of Knives might be a good idea until Odd Pally dies.
So far it's been bringing fun back to HS for me as I was in a bit of a rut. Love being able to use both Fal'Dorei Strider and Hooktusk, both super fun cards. Being able to keep Prince is just icing on the cake.
---------------------------------------------------- UPDATES & SUBSTITUTIONS
Update 2/7: I added the 2nd Spirit of the Shark back, just to keep the theme of the deck. I still think having 2 in hand is not a great situation. You can still get great value from 1 Spirit when played at the right time. I am running 2X Tar Creeper and seeing if it helps vs aggro or more aggressive midrange decks. I am still considering Mojomaster Zihi in place of something as well to assert dominance in control and OTK matchups.
68% WR on Hooktusk when played, btw! Hoping to bring the WR up a bit. I dabbled with -1 Ticket Scalper but it hurt the Captain Hooktusk recruit a little too often. I easily made it to Rank 9-10 today, hope the climb continues for y'all.
**** PIRATE PACKAGE can be subbed out as follows:
2X Southsea Captain --> 2X Hench-Clan Thug
2X Ticket Scalper --> 2X Saronite Chain Gang or 2X Lifedrinker
2X Cursed Castaway --> Sonya Shadowdancer and Mojomaster Zihi
1X Captain Hooktusk --> Your choice! (Pick Volcanosaur....you know you want to...)
User Jsnep7's list is in the comments and User KiwiinBacon made a video of my initial list (posted above, includes Volcanosaurs that don't see play).
---------------------------------------------------- MULLIGAN
Obviously keep Prince Keleseth. Only keep Shadowstep with Keleseth. Keep Fire Fly and Backstab. Keep SI:7 Agent with The Coin. Edwin VanCleef is a keep with Backstab and Coin, could keep with coin. I would also keep Fal'dorei Strider. Spirit of the Shark, although the centerpiece, may not get full value without more mana to spend after playing it, so I typically won't keep it unless I have Coin and Fal'Dorei Strider.
-----------------------------------------
VS. AGGRO
This is a weakness for the deck as there aren't many 3-drop plays that can contest an aggro board. Keep Tar Creeper and Zilliax in the mulligan to slow down and heal into the mid-game where you need to take board control. The win condition here is survival until your board can overtake theirs through trades, Backstab, SI:7 Agent, Fire Fly, Hero Power, Vilespine Slayer if you survive that long. Spirit of the Shark is way too slow in this matchup. Without Fan of Knives Odd Paladin is oppressive, maybe the worst matchup.
VS. CONTROL & COMBO/OTK
This deck is a little slower and you will encounter board wipes, but that's OK for us because you should always have a way to present a threatening board- that's basically our win condition. We can refill more than they can wipe. Getting Leyline Spiders going will help if you're hand is a bit small. Take full advantage of Spirit of the Shark combos- Shadowstep can be amazing for 4X battlecry triggers. Bait big removal on Turn 7 and Captain Hooktusk on 8 to refill- Hooktusk can turn a lost mid-game around and draw you cards. If they have no other AOE it might be GG. I have played this deck against several Odd Warriors and won by the refill potential of the deck.
Leeroy Jenkins - Shadowstep - Leeroy Jenkins is 12 damage burst for 8 mana so hold that 2nd Shadowstepif you can. You could also get multiple Eviscerate effects off of SI:7 Agent + Shadowstep with Spirit on board.
If you're losing to OTK, consider adding Mojomaster Zihi to delay big clears, death knights (looking at you, Frost Lich Jaina), and the combos themselves.
----------------------
I think that pretty much sums of all that's necessary for now. Please let me know if you need more info- Kiwi pilots the deck well in the video if you're looking to see it in action. It's the last month before Keleseth rotates so enjoy it as much as possible now!
This is a really fun deck, thank you. I think the only card that hasn't worked for me so far is the Ticket Scalper.
The Volcanosaur combo has won me so many games.
I'm glad you're enjoying it! Ticket Scalper is not great played from hand, a drawback of using the pirate package but a bit necessary for Captain Hooktusk. I am so jealous you are getting the Volcanosaur combo to work... I never got it myself.. card usually sat in my hand unless I had no other play. Maybe a good 1-of inclusion if you have the room for it, but probably not 2.
I wish Prince Keleseth wasn't rotating out... then I could craft him.
Still, good deck. Vote up.
What about :
- Elven Minstrel (since it kinda takes your pirates out if your deck)
and
- Volcanosaur (that seems a bit to much late game IMO)
And replace them by 2 Hench-Clan Thug and 2 Tar Creeper ? It doesn't combo much with the spirit but gives you more agressive plays in the early with Thug and a strong body with Tar creeper to combo with Fungal.
Hi Murthag- I totally agree about the Volcanosaur- it's too slow. It's a cool idea and very meme-y but I actually just took them out for 1X Tar Creeper and 1X Zilliax to help against some of the aggro matchups since this deck is on the slower side/is weak to aggro.
I have to say the Minstrel has not been disruptive... it's actually pretty essential for draw since you can't count on Scalper. Yes, it could take the pirates out but it's not all that likely. Even if it does pull 1, the hope is that you have 3 left by the time Hooktusk comes into hand. Try it out! I'm at around 30 games and have only had a crappy Tusk pull 1-2 times but I might just be lucky.
Hey Panda (sorry being rude)
I'll obviously try it, seems fun as hell, and I've been looking for a list that runs Captain Hooktusk and Fal'dorei Strider hehehe, so thanks sharing your list.
I'll try with the minstrels then, but I kinda have the feeling that Hench-Clan Thug is somehow a must have in tempo rogue. We'll see how I feel about this after some games.
Hiya, you are not being rude :) Hench-Clan Thug is ofc a good card for tempo rogue's early game. I struggle a bit to find a spot for it... maybe if you used 1X Shadowstep and turned the 1X Tar Creeper into one you could include 2X Hench Clan. The thing I do kinda like without him is being able to use dagger freely/not holding it to buff him or feeling the need to use 2 mana to re-dagger to buff him further. Maybe you can try this version (-1 Shadowstep, -1 Tar, +2 Hench) and let us know if you found it superior?
so you're losing Cold Blood and your answer is Volcanosaur? really?
throw in Seaforium Bomber or Zilliax but not a mediocre 7-drop that offers no tempo or reach whatsoever.
Hello. I'm simply testing it out right now (if you read the description). No need for the harshness. I think that Zilliax and Mojomaster or Lifedrinker are likely to replace the Volcanosaurs. It seemed worth trying, at the least an interesting and potentially powerful interaction with Spirit.
This deck is an absolute blast to play and will grow even stronger once the nerfs hit later this week. I definitely recommend this to all players who want to enjoy themselves whilst climbing the ladder! In fact I made a video showcasing the deck in all of its glory, that I hope you all enjoy
Thanks Kiwi! I responded to your PM. I think this video will help anyone who is trying to see it in action until I get the matchups/mulligans update in tomorrow. I'll include the vid in the guide too. :)
awesome :D
You and Tommy Wave are damn annoying posting videos of others peoples deck.
Upvoted, but sincerely interested - how often does the Captain Hooktusk come before you've drawn any other pirates? Ticket Scalper is a bad card to play from hand, Cursed Castaway has rush on its own to begin with, so including an 8 mana 6/3 seems, well, worse than most 8 drops available in the game (even just getting The Lich King which really has no place in a tempo deck would serve better, IMO).
Would probably try it sometime, but either with a different pirate package or dropping it for better battlecry/combo minions to begin with.
Hi Quicksand- I literally started playing the deck the day I posted this list, so my #s are kinda low atm but in the 20 games I have played with it Hooktusk has pulled 3 pirates the majority of the time. One time it pulled 0. I think it's a little risky since you may not always get the 3, but this is also the entire pirate package that is listed on HSReplay's top performing Tempo deck atm so it must be working with larger sample sizes to some degree.
Someone earlier made a comment about Scalper and I tried to address it there - see Trollbert's comment below. Bottom line being if you're dissatisfied with the pirate pack you can put in a more standard set of minions/spells, it's not a set in stone requirement. I just think Captain Hooktusk is a FUN card and is also very powerful when pulling 3 minions to help thin out the deck for spiders.
Like the idea, sure looks promising, will be even stronger the 6th of February.
Not too sure about the pirate package, feels kind of forced into this. Im more concerned about your early board protetction, i feel like against hunter/odd pala &rogue/even pala and other tempo decks you would fall behind on board to soon.
I would cut the pirate package, that would generate room for 7 cards.
Also don't lose sight of what your win condition is, if you play it with Leeroy and Fungal it's still a tempo/midrange deck. You don't want to see turn 10 kick in. Because by that time the game will most likely not go your way, especially with all the OTK decks around now. (clone priest jumps to mind)
So i took your list and made some adjustments to them, if it works for you then it works, if not try it out.

I'll elaborate quickly on my card choices:
Cold blood is still in here i know, after the patch we can sure find something better because we wont run it for 2 mana, was considering a extra lifedrinker because its also tempo with a body, if i feel like value is lacking i could squeeze a cheeky sonya in there.
Hench clan is so good for early game, ideal turn 3 drop without coin, can win u matches and if not he'll cost your opponent some hard removal.
Tar Creeper to contest early board and protect your valuable minions like spirit, hench, edwin, prince keleseth, zilliax.
Zola works good with a lot of cards in this deck, but you have to be ahead to get the most value out of him, with spirit he'll trigger twice. You can make a copy of keleset for value, edwin for value, si7 for removal, elven for draw, lifedrinker for lethal, saronite for board control, spirit for value, fungal for value, leeroy for lethal, vilespine for removal, zilliax for removal/healing, zihi for stalling OTK.
Lifedrinker is good on its own in a rogue tempo deck, the healing can sometimes be what you need, with spirit its so strong.
Zilliax, especially now cold blood is still here is always a solid choice for removal and healing, something we don't have any of.
Mojomaster zihi is golden, this card won me a lot of games not only against OTK decks, stalling a DK can be a huge tempo swing.
These are my 2 cents on the deck, i can't try it out yet im trying to climb to legend (R3 atm) with my even shaman before the smash it into the ground, rip.
Hey thanks for the feedback. I think your deck looks really good, a great non-pirate version that would probably have a higher win %, especially with Cold Bloods still available for a few days. Lifedrinker is a super good choice for this deck... I may end up replacing the Volcanosaurs with Lifedrinkers. I will try subbing a few of your choices and try it out. I don't have much time today to play but tomorrow I will play a lot and give a new update with details.
I have always wanted to use Zihi btw- might be cool enough for me to get rid of Hooktusk :)
Zihi counters a lot of the meta right now, and even with keleseth its a solid body.
I really hope this archetype would become more popular, big fan of the spirit rogue kind of deck. I've tried a lot to make it work last season, but ended up going 25-23 at R4, so not enough to climb. but out of those games 42% was against hunters and thats a terrible match-up for this deck.
With the new nerfs there should be a lot less hunters, really hope this archetype can push to T2 or even T1.
Good luck with testing, appreciate the effort!
Hi bro. I really like your idea. And I really want to use 2 Corpsetaker + harpy combo. What should I replace with in your deck ? Which three ? I choosen 2 Tar Creeper and Lifedrinker? Is it alright? What do you say?
Hi! I'd remove the Pirates (7) and replace with:
1X Tar Creeper (so you have 2 total)
2X Corpsetaker
1X Windfury Harpy
and then you'd have 3 slots left for whatever you like! maybe 2X Lifedrinker and 1X Zihi, Chain Gang, or even experiment with Crazed Chemist
