Final update: I've peaked at rank #1612. If I had more time to play this month (January 2019), I'm certain I could have gone further. I could try to surpass it next month, but I'm kinda burned out tbh
INTRODUCTION
Almost a year ago I managed to climb to legend with a deck of my own, tempolock, which is also the most popular deck I've made so far:
http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/1054666-rank-4-to-legend-tempolock
I've decided to bring it back to life, although with a different approach: whereas back then I subbed the discard stuff with an elemental package, I've kept in the discards this time.
Disclaimer: this deck is not necessarily better than any other deck in the meta. Just as with the list I linked above, I did it as a deckbuilding challenge for myself.
That being said, I find not only viable but also quite entertaining to play and really skill intensive, so I recommend you to give it a try :)
CARD CHOICES
Because it's a tempo deck and not an aggro deck, the general idea is that it has to be able to withstand longer games while still maintaining pressure. With this in mind, I took a zoolock shell and tweaked it a bit, the 2 key cards for this gameplan being Soulwarden and Bloodreaver Gul'dan.
Hooked Reaver may seem like an odd choice as it's typically run in more control oriented builds. However though, I think it's power level is well above other 4 drops'. While most of the time you won't be able to activate in turn 4, a 4 mana 7/7 with taunt will be more than welcome later in the game.
Crystallizer helps it get on board earlier (and is a fantastic 1 drop on its own).
Zilliax is just good overall.
I've tried Fungalmancer but I wasn't happy with the result, as it made good matchups better but didn't help in bad matchups. Despicable Dreadlord is better in those bad matchups (odd rogue, odd paladin).
I've tried Ornery Tortoise to make the whole Hooked Reaver thing faster, but it wasn't worth it. You'll kill yourself vs aggro and on top of that it's not good in the late game.
Replacements
An interesting 3 drop you could play would be Chittering Tunneler, as it allows you to regulate the amount of damage you take (keep in mind the average is 2.97) and generates extra value. My main problem with it is that it's just a 3/3, but I could see it working.
GENERAL GUIDE
Discards
Thanks to Soulwarden, you don't have to worry too much about what you discard, but in some cases, managing what cards you discard can be vital.
The best cards to discard overall are Soulwarden (you can create infinite Soulwardens if you discard one and only two other cards), Soulfire (extra burst), Doomguard (extra burst), Bloodreaver Gul'dan (extra board flood) and taunts (extra protection vs aggro).
Self damage
You need to manage well your HP. Most of the time you will be happy to take damage, as you'll want those Hooked Reavers activated, but be careful against aggro.
Also, be careful with the order in which you play your self-damage cards and Crystallizer.
Class-specific
Overall: you don’t always need to play around AoE because you can easily reload
Because most of the time you won’t know what specific archetype you’ll be up against, I’ve made the mulligan guide to help you in as many cases as possible.
Hunter
- Mulligan: keep as many 1 drops as you can (Flame Imp>Voidwalker>Crystallizer>Kobold Librarian), Prince Keleseth, Tar Creeper. Saronite Chain Gang/Zilliax too if your hand is good already.
- Strategy:
- Hybrid hunter: kill their beasts to deny synergies and don't take risks. If you get to play Bloodreaver Gul'dan you'll most likely win.
- Spell hunter: try to survive. If you play your Bloodreaver Gul'dan before they play their Zul'jin, you'll most likely win
Priest
- Mulligan: keep Flame Imp, Prince Keleseth. You can keep Doomguard if you’re on the coin and have a good hand already.
- Strategy:
- Clone priest: you need to close the game ASAP, take every risk you must.
- Control priest: Play aggressively overall but don’t risk it as much. You pretty much win when you play Bloodreaver Gul'dan, more because of the hero power than because of the battlecry.
Most of the time they’ll Shadow Visions for AoE, but sometimes if they see that you’re taking lots of self damage they can get ambitious and Shadow Visions Mind Blast, so be careful.
Paladin
- Mulligan: keep Voidwalker>Crystallizer (these two aren't great against OTK, but odd paladin is a way worse matchup in which 1 drops matter more), Prince Keleseth, Tar Creeper.
- Strategy:
- Odd paladin: try to survive
- Even paladin: try to beat them before they beat you. Sunkeeper Tarim and Equality will be your worst enemies
- OTK paladin: try to be as aggressive as you can. Don't let them set up a Spikeridged Steed or have a Spellbreaker at hand
Rogue
- Mulligan: keep Voidwalker>Crystallizer, Soulfire (for Hench-Clan Thug/Vicious Fledgling), Prince Keleseth, Tar Creeper. Saronite Chain Gang/Zilliax too if your hand is good already
- Strategy:
- Odd rogue: try to survive. Don’t take risks.
Mage
- Mulligan: keep Voidwalker>Crystallizer>Kobold Librarian, Prince Keleseth. Sometimes Tar Creeper too
- Strategy:
- Odd mage ("normal"): try to be as aggressive as you can. Remember that you cannot beat Dragoncaller Alanna.
- Odd mage (aggro): try to survive
Warlock
- Mulligan: keep Flame Imp>Kobold Librarian>Voidwalker>Crystallizer, Prince Keleseth
- Strategy:
- Evenlock: be really careful with their Mountain Giants. Keep in mind that they have plenty of taunts and healing. He who plays Bloodreaver Gul'dan first wins (most of the time at least)
- Mecha’thun warlock: be as aggressive as you can. Remember that they need more than 4 health to pull of the combo. Try to find spellbreaker for their Voidlord
Warrior
- Mulligan: keep Flame Imp>Kobold Librarian, Prince Keleseth
- Strategy:
- Quest warrior: be as aggressive as you can.
- Odd warrior: be as aggressive as you can. If the opportunity is presented, do the infinite Soulwarden combo, you can’t lose if you pull that off.
Druid
- Mulligan: keep Flame Imp, Prince Keleseth
- Strategy:
- Mecha'thun/Hakkar druid: be as aggressive as you can. Deny their card draw (Gadgetzan Auctioneer, Acolyte of Pain) unless they have no more cards in their deck.
STATS
They have all been recorded from rank 5. Took me 4h 5 min to get from rank 5 to legend btw, my best time yet.
Version 1.0 is back when I had Shroom Brewers instead of Saronite Chain Gangs
Version 1.1 is just a game in which I tried Fungalmancers instead of Despicable Dreadlords
Version 1.2 is the actual version (the best imo, despite the data)
Some screenshots
Rank 5 to 4 (missing a couple here)
Rank 4 to 3
Rank 3 to 2
Rank 2 to 1
Rank 1 to legend
Legend #5000 to #1612
looks cool. still need soul wardens though.
If I get them though I would like to try them in a wild disco zoo. surely they will have great synergy with malchezaars imp.
Soulwarden has become one of my favorite cards of the set. 6 mana 6/6 that draws 3 cards and that allows for crazy stuff if you plan your discards well. I hope you get them :)
I thought I'd seen this before. I had already upvoted and commented. good job I check as I'd removed my vote there. (if you click up vote twice you remove your vote. it happens a lot. is quite unfortunate)
btw mate, you should make a wild version of this. I'd love to see it.
It's kinda complicated since I'm not familiar with the wild meta, but I'll be sure to tell you if I can come up with something
yeah mate I will be able to, just need those new epics.
A great surprise !
No enough games for a real feedback but this deck is so pleasant to drive ..
GG man !
Thanks for the kind words and for trying it out!
Just curious, but isn't dire mole better than crystalliser? Cuz you can't play crystalliser with 5 or less health.
Crystalliser also helps activate Hooked Reaver
Totally forgot about that haha
Played 7 games so far and won 5. Both of my losses are to that Mecha'thun Warlock deck. Any suggestions on beating that deck? I really like your list and it is very fun to play, and I know that 7 games is not an adequate test, but the hits just keep coming with this thing. Just when it looks like the opponents has cleared the board you pull off some crazy crap and end the game with a win.
Unfortunately, I've never played against Mecha'thun Warlock with this deck, so it's complicated for me to say.
I'd say drawing keleseth early and doomguards are the key to win this matchup. They have too much spot removal and AoE for us to have a decent board that sticks.
If I face one in the future I'll let you know how I handled it and how it went
Oh and by the way thank you for trying it out! Glad to hear you're doing well with it :)
Finally encountered some, here are the replays:
https://hsreplay.net/replay/r9cYhsDKv7ZwEUDdnzKnBh
https://hsreplay.net/replay/nJQvisC4J2dM9RX93Ldg7Y
Not much to say though, I just tried to stay as aggressive as I could.
Appreciate the response and the replays. I waded through the Voidlords ok in my matchups, but they would play crap minions and defile the board or play a weak minion and Lord Godfrey in both games. Glad to see that they didn't get to pull that on you. Also, glad to see that matchup is not an auto concede, basically. Thanks again for the deck. Hope you make it up to the top with it, LEGEND.
