Here's the decklist of my fresh Secret Tempo Mage. Just went from rank 9 to 5 without one lose, works pretty well against hunters also.
Mulligan: Keep Secretkeeper, Leper Gnome and Arcanologist. If you already have 1 Mana Drops, you can keep Kirin Tor Mage in addition to get some early tempo.
The playstyle is pretty much like every aggro deck: Face is the place. Try to build an strong early board with your minions to maintain control, you can also use your spells like Frostbolt or Fireball to clear enemy minions to keep your board alive, but only if necessary. You want to save as many spells as possible for the enemy face to get an unpredictable lethal. Bloodmage Thalnos is excellent to combo with your spells for additional damage and also can give you card draw in the early game.
Midgame you want to get out your secret, remember to combo them with Kirin Tor Mage. Also try to play them in different orders, so your enemy can't predict which Secret it is. Mirror Entity is almost never played and will totally throw off your enemies, since they don't expect it. Arcane Keysmith is good to give us situational Secrets, just choose what fits best for the current state of game. Since we have 6 Secrets and 2 Arcane Keysmith in this deck, it shouldn't be a problem to get our Secretkeeper and Ethereal Arcanist buffed. Try to only play Ethereal Arcanist when a Secret is already in play, so it immideatly gets the +2/+2 Buff for more survivability.
Aluneth allows you to keep up the tempo in the late game and also gives you the opportunity to deal a big amount of since you now can use all spells to the enemy face. Once Aluneth is in play you can finish off the weakend enemy with Fireball, Frostbolt, and Leeroy Jenkins.
Tommy Wave did a video on this deck, feel free to check it out. :)
Hope you have as much fun as I do with this deck, may your games be good! :D
I want to thank you, dear Sir, this deck is fun to play and feels strong so far.
I am a passionate mage player but haven't been playing Hearthstone for almost one year. In the older meta, I tried secret mage before, it feels ok but not overwhelming.
The reasons why I like this deck and what I think it is strong in this beta is because:
So far this deck is doing well against control decks. It might be weak against secret hunter as mentioned here:
I agree with him to change Sorcerer's Apprentice for another 2cost minion. I think Sorcerer's Apprentice is good when you want to combo some spells but it doesn't happen that often with this deck.
However, I had some trouble to play out Leeroy Jenkins, since I have got the feeling that there are a lot of Taunts in the current meta. So play it early when it can face the opponent. I think in the mid-late game you don't want to waste your damage spell to clear taunt minions. I am considering to replace it.
Also Pyroblast is a valid choice in my opinion. Of course, it is a high-risk high- reward card. In some situations, it can be your last hope. I mean every mage player must have encountered the "if I only had a Pyroblast" situation. It allows you to play more aggressively, especially with Aluneth in the deck. I also enjoy the feeling to play against an opponent with 20 health :).
Wow this deck is complete and utter fucking trash, don't waste your time.
Too much luck based. Aggainst Aggro you dont´have removal and vs. Control you need to be lucky to draw the quick cards.
I think Tempo Mage is just not good enough in this meta. It has no end game strategy, when you go to round 10+.
"Tempo mage" .... pretty sure this is aggro..
Pretty sure he meant by "Tempo" a deck between aggro and midrang, and yeah we also have some high tempo cards like Kirin Tor Mage (Kirin Tor Mage +secret = 3 mana), so yeah we can call it "Tempo mage"
When you look up the most definitive cards for aggro, tempo, and midrange, you can make a good case for Kirin Tor Mage as the most clear example of tempo. It provides no card advantage, it's aggressively stated, and it has no real deep combo synergy. The Secret may have synergy but you could have played that for 3 by itself.
Fun as hell so far. Played against a priest, played a counterspell first, countered shadow visions, played arcane keysmith and played counterspell, another shadow visions countered, played arcane keysmith with another counterspell, power word shield countered. Turn 5 concede. :)
I played four games, against a spellHunter EACH time. Auto loose
What about Stargazer Luna, Cosmic Anomaly, Spellzerker and Masked Contender?
Only one from this list I could see working with this deck is + masked contender - Arcanologist since it's basically the same thing, but the arcanologist curve is great for early game.
I was thinking about Arcane Keysmith not Arcanologist. I really don't understand the down votes. Stargazer Luna and Cosmic Anomaly where in fact part of the original Tempo Secret Mage.
how do you take care of a spellstone?
Also wondering this. Against spell hunter's I'm having trouble if they are able to play their stone. I know that's just something I have to deal with because we can't be good at everything, but just wanted to know if anyone else if having trouble or if there's a workaround?
Played 20 games at rank 18 with this deck : I had a 45% winrate and 0% winrate against Spell Hunter
This deck is very weak against spell hunters. The reason is because secrets like Explosive Runes and Mirror Entity will never trigger against a deck that doesn't play minions. 2 of your 3 secrets are dead cards against them, leaving you only with Counterspell.
Also, cards like Sorcerer's Apprentice and Arcane Keysmith don't survive to Explosive Trap and Deathstalker Rexxar.
Also, Leper Gnome instantly dies to Candleshot.
In order to improve your winrate against Spell hunters, you would need to change a lot of cards:
1. Change Leper Gnome for Fire Fly (reason: survives Candleshot)
2. Change Mirror Entity for another secret like Spellbender or Splitting Image (reason: Spell hunter doesn't play minions)
3. Change Arcane Keysmith for Masked Contender (reason: survives Explosive Trap, Deathstalker Rexxar and even Flanking Strike)
That's to start: Additionally you could try:
4. Change Sorcerer's Apprentice for Spellzerker (reason: survives Explosive Trap and Deathstalker Rexxar)
5. Change Arcane Missiles for Shooting Star (reason: with +2 spell damage can kill 3 wolves from Greater Emerald Spellstone)
6. Change Bloodmage Thalnos for Stargazer Luna (reason: survives Explosive Trap, Deathstalker Rexxar and even Flanking Strike)
7. Change Explosive Runes for Spellbender or Splitting Image (reason: Spell hunter doesn't play minions)
Those changes will improve your winrate against spell hunters. But note that changing Explosive Runes will hurt your win rate against everything else.
Finally, you can always add a Chief Inspector to destroy their secrets.
Every deck has good and bad matchups, Spell Hunter is definetly one of the bad matchups for this tempo deck. Changing the cards will increase your chances against Spell Hunter and decrease them against certain other matchups. You should always check out what enemies you are facing the most and consider swapping out some cards to optimize the deck for your matchups.
But thank you for the "Anti Spell Hunter" variant of this deck, I'm sure the community will appreciate it. :)
With spell and secret being the best decks out there it shouldnt have a bad match up for it atleast 50/50 or you wont climb there needs to be ways to get counterspell more often
I`m using Splitting Image ! For me is the most powerful secret in this deck!
This secret with Leeroy Jenkins or Ethereal Arcanist is a game change.
After losing Mana Wyrm, a lot of people lost hope for Tempo Mage. This deck here really takes advantage the secret synergies in standard and hits hard! Played a few games with the deck, check them out;
(Games start at 4:50)
Would love to know your thoughts behind including Leper Gnome over something like Fire Fly or Saronite Taskmaster. Thanks so much for sharing this awesome deck! <3
Hi! Any replacements for Bloodmage Thalnos and Leeroy Jenkins? I also have Stargazer Luna.
