Greetings mon! Rastakhan brought quite the interesting card, Hakkar, the Soulflayer. Previously Control Paladin struggled to beat any OTK deck, as well it lacked a discernable win condition against long value decks, but that all changes with Hakkar. It has many applications that are quite powerful for a control deck in that you can practically always win a fatigue race, as well as beat some OTK/Combo decks, most notably Mecha'thun, Shudderwock, and the currently popular OTK Paladin if played correctly. And thankfully, thanks to Prince Liam you will not be taking any damage from the Corrupted Blood on top of getting free Legendaries. Now that's value!
Here's my guide for you all :)
Strengths and Weaknesses
As mentioned above the deck can beat Mech'athun, Shudderwock, and OTK Paladin. Can win the fatigue race, and keep up against some more board centric decks such as Evolve Frog Shaman, Rush Warrior, Heal Zoo/Discolock, and Odd Mage. Can beat just about any control deck.
Weaknesses include Spell Hunter, struggles to keep up with their value game against Deathstalker Rexxar and Zul'jin in one game. It's just too strong...
Decks with lots of big minions most notably Even Warlock and Taunt/Big Beast Druid. Struggles to deal with the constant flow of big minions as this deck doesn't have any hard removal besides Equality, so you'll be hitting them with your weapons quite often (ouch)
Deathrattle decks. Sticky minions and especially in the case of Hunter is hard to remove completely and efficiently with Paladin.
Odd Paladin. Struggles to keep up with their constant refill of the board, needs a Wild Pyromancer to stick to beat this but if can't it's a difficult matchup.
Odd Rogue is as shaky matchup but otherwise winnable.
Mulligans Vs Matchups
Hunter: Wild Pyromancer, Consecration, Truesilver Champion, Plated Beetle, Corpsetaker. Try to win the board and survive through DK and Zul-jin so you can eventually win with Hakkar, but is not important for this matchup as it's difficult to get Hakkar on the board.
Mage: Equality, Wild Pyromancer, Plated Beetle, Loot Hoarder, Truesilver Champion, Corpestaker, Zilliax. Treat Mage like an aggro/midrange deck, they have early game that you need to keep up with but it's not too fast. Try to flood the board as much as you can when you have board control to force their big removal so you have a breather to play Hakkar afterwards.
Warrior: Loot Hoarder, Hakkar, Corpsetaker, Truesilver Champion, Zilliax, Countess Ashmore. Typically a slow deck that will go to fatigue means you feast upon them, as long as they don't have DMH.
Paladin: Wild Pyromancer, Consecration, Stonehill Defender, Righteous Protector, Plated Beetle, Loot Hoarder (In case of OTK Pally) Just try to get your early game against Odd and against OTK your Hakkar as soon as possible.
Rogue: Righteous Protector, Plated Beetle, Wild Pyromancer, Truesilver Champion, Corpsetaker, Zilliax, Stonehill Defender. Same as Pally just try to get your early game as well as your mid game stuff to try and get board control.
Priest: Truesilver Champion, Corpsetaker, Wild Pryomancer, Equality, Zilliax. I dunno what Priest is doing mostly now but just try to get your mid game and especially equality in case of some Inner Fire shenanigans. If it's a control deck you know the drill...Amara isn't going to save them this time.
Warlock: Righteous Protector, Wild Pyromancer, Equality, Consecration, Plated Beetle, Truesilver Champion, Corpsetaker. Equality is a must in either situation for clearing Zoo boards and Even lock's big minions, and keep in mind save one equality and AoE for DK.
Shaman: Wild Pyromancer, Consecration, Equality, Plated Beetle, Truesilver Champion, Righteous Protector, Stonehill Defender, Loot Hoarder. Against Evolve or any kind of flood deck Just try to clear their board efficiently and you'll succeed. Against Shudderwock get to Hakkar as soon as possible and hope they don't hex your Hakkar, try to bait them out first.
Druid: Loot Hoarder, Hakkar, Countess Ashmore, Corpsetaker, Equality, Consecration, Wild Pyromancer. Hakkar is crucial to get down as fast possible, deters the druid to draw a lot and beating Mecha'thun. Token Druid can be a scary matchup so mulligan for Consec + Pyro as well as Equality for the Big minion decks. KEEP IN MIND try to avoid Hero Power as much to play around Spreading Plague and Gonk the Raptor, the latter is a potential OTK deck and having too many minions it can kill with the Hero power will result in your death. Better safe than sorry.
Changes made -1 Call to Arms -1 Da Undatakah +1 Countess Ashmore +1 Sunkeeper Tarim
Reasons for changes: I feel this deck cannot afford to pull Wild Pyromancer most of the time, better to feel safe than sorry but CTA is still a decent option. Countess Ashmore provides much needed card draw and the cards you get help with surviving on top of a chance to tutor for Hakkar. There wasn't much Silence and Geist going around so I cut Undatakah, though it remains a decent option in the deck if the meta starts including them more. Sunkeeper Tarim is just good..much needed help against Even Warlock and other Big minion decks.
Good replacements if you don't have certain cards: High Priest Thekal, Call to Arms, Tirion Fordring, Gluttonous Ooze, Spellbreaker, Da Undatakah Immortal Prelate
If you have any suggestions for changes to the deck, guide, or questions feel free to let me know.
Good luck and have fun!
interesting idea, gonna try it.
Pure form of butter! I really like this idea but since I'm playing Wild gonna modify it!
How well has this deck held up? How often do you win through Hakkar? I'm currently playing a healadin with the DK as my win condition but am interested in crafting Hakkar and Liam and running with this win condition instead. That being said, if it's not effective, I don't want to spend 3600 dust on it.
Nothing spectacular but it holds up just fine. I didn't win too many games with Hakkar usually only in the games where it mattered most. If you like Control Paladin then this is about as good as it gets, without Hakkar Control Paladin struggles a lot against some Combo and Control decks.
I went ahead and crafted it. Just beat a kingsbane rogue by shuffling 16 bloods in his deck despite him having a 22 attack weapon with lifesteal
I have questions, firstly if your hakkar gets hexed is it game over? And socondly if your first hakkar dies do you wait for undatakah to trigger too? Or you just play liam and have dead card in your hand (undatakah)
Well..yeah against a Big Mage with Poly it's pretty much an L, but they are typically Odd decks right now. As for Shaman it's mostly Even or spirit of the frog decks, both you can win by just clearing the board and constantly healing which this deck has lots of. So you won't be running into that problem anytime soon. I've yet to come across that issue.
As for Undatakah yeah just wait until you can Prince Liam if you do end up getting Hakkar's deathrattle again. Keep in mind the order of deathrattles that get added to Undatakah are in which they are played, that is if they die. It's not all that bad as you can get Loot Hoarder and Plated beetle's deathrattle, so it can at least do something to help. like I said if Hakkar gets silenced (which lots of decks are carrying) then the deck will just struggle a lot in games that will go to fatigue, that has always been a glaring weakness control paladin has..just doesn't have a good win condition to beat other control decks.
As i understood from your reply i shouldn't immediately liam when hakkar dies right? I should wait undatakah to die too.
Absolutely love it. Control paladin play style, makes good use of the golden Hakkar, the Soulflayer. and can shutout infinite value games like Mage DK. No Da Undatakah so I put in High Priest Thekal instead. Not too sure about the inclusion of Call to Arms yet, as it pulls Wild Pyromancer which can be crucial for board clears with Equality.
Glad to hear you enjoy it :)
Honestly man the good outweigh the bad, Wild Pyro can be bad to pull with CTA when you need it for future turns but in most cases it has helped me immensely. Against aggro swinging the board in my favor after losing tempo in the early stages, and after that I was able to stay ahead on the board. It is also important to get to Hakkar faster in control matchups, I played against Odd mage that had DK early too and if I had played Hakkar a turn later when I did I probably would have lost because I was down to 1 health left when I won that fatigue race.
Yeah I get it. I think I hadn’t been playing against as much aggro (something I rarely get to say) so I wasn’t seeing the as much of the utility there. The deck thinning in control is useful, so I think a one of in a deck works well. Again really fun deck, one of the first things I thought about when Hakkar was announced was the Prince Liam potential, so props for this list
I'd consider adding Countess Ashmore considering how well she fits and she pulls Shivallah, Zilliax and one of the deathrattles.
I get that but you don't exactly want to draw them due to Corpsetaker.
Hopefully you are playing Corpsetaker before turn 7+ or it looses a lot of it's strength anyway.
Hey, I've actually tested Countess Ashmore out and it's doing surprisingly well, still manage to get value out of Corpsetaker in most of my games. Thank you for the suggestion!
Lol the name of the deck comes from Hakkar and Stubborn Gastropod (was in the deck) as they have poisonous qualities.
Don't forget the forum
Is this deck really toxic? It looks like a fair deck to me.
Is Uther of the Ebon Blade replaceable ??
It's not necessary so yeah it can be, replace it with whatever you like.
