Just killed a warrior on turn 6 from 33 health with nothing but a Necrium Blade on board
Edit: thanks for the upvotes. Here's a small description:
The deck's idea is to assemble the whole combo through a single Elven Minstrel. That happens 100% of the time when you do not play the Cavern Shinyfinder, however i have found that card to add consistency rather than lower it.
The way you actually win is by having a 1 charge Necrium Blade equipped, then playing Kobold Illusionist -> attack > Backstab (or Razorpetal) the Illusionist and then burn the opponent. That's 4 mana for 2 copies of Malygos. Shadowsteps only help prepare a 2 mana Illusionist, leading to an even cheaper setup, that can allow us to burn even a high armor opponent. They are however not highly important and are probably the first cards to replace.
Cards like Bloodmage Thalnos, Vilespine Slayer or some taunts would help keep us alive, but would lead to us needing more time and more draw. Personally, i have not found that version of the deck as interesting or effective.
Edit #2: i've replaced the two Shadowsteps for one Sudden Betrayal and one Necrium Vial, as a test. The first is aimed at helping against aggro and the second against high armor decks (and slow draws).
As for Mulligan choices: Always keep one Elven Minstrel, as he gets us the full combo. Mulligan aggressively for him.
If you are certain the opponent is playing aggro, you can keep effective removal like Backstab or Sap. If you are certain they are slow, keep Preparation and Razorpetal Volley, as they speed things up for you.
Update #3:
I replaced the Shinyfinder with a second Sudden Betrayal, partially because the secret was performing well, partially because of a rage moment on a shinyfinder topdeck on the wrong turn.
I am personally getting close to a 50% winrate against zoo, which should be a very bad matchup. Don't play like a typical control deck. When the pressure is not too high, try to ignore it and setup your combo. You have to win first, not outlast them.
Thank everyone for the enormous feedback. This is something i never expected. I hope you keep having fun!
Final Edit:
I do not have the time to refine this deck as much as I would like. However as many of you have found, tuning it is not too hard, because there are a few simple guidelines to follow.
1. You should be very careful about adding more minions. Every one reduces the effectiveness of Elven Minstrel by a lot, and that card is the soul of the deck.
2. Mulligan almost everything for Elven Minstrel and go for the combo as soon as possible. If your opponent doesn't have lethal on board and you can set up the OtK, go for it. Don't play this as control because the rogue class does not have the tools for that.
3. Don't give up if your opponent is gaining a lot of armour. If you find the right spells you can burn through obscene amounts of it, as demonstrated in the videos.
And an important clarification. The deck has a somewhat weird approach to it. Contrary to what most players are used to, the aim is not to have a fair chance to win every game. Instead the deck aims at being extremely favoured when drawing properly, while accepting that there will be a few games you just concede. It is in a sense a coinflip deck, except the odds depend on the metagame, rather than always being 50-50.
Updated for Rastakhan: 2 Walk the Planks and one Cavern Shinyfinder in the place of two secrets and an Assassinate.
The deck is now much smoother and can actually be used for ranking up consistently.
Here's a video of the deck by Kiwiinbacon.
And here is the second video!
I dont know maybe im always unlucky in mulligan but.. its like %99 against aggro decks like zoolock, odd pally if you dont draw like a god. Any tips for beating aggro? I tried putting Betrayal ( took out Assassination ) even though i play secrets they always have fuel to fill their board. Couldn't manage to get a single win against them.
First try: Quest warrior, 50 damage aren't enough but i'm loving this deck
you have a 1/1 Malygos on board from the weapon, so you can backstab it ;)
Your backstab still do 12 damage after Necrium Vial procs or 7 after Necrium Blade
while i agree its a fun deck the biggest drawback for me is the card draw...theres really only 4 cards that draw...2 shivs and 2 fan of knives...2 minstrels to tutor and its not guaranteed you're gonna get both kobold and malygos....you might get the second minstrel...this is a combo deck...combo decks need draw..this does not have draw (or at least enough of it)
Either the first minstrel draws kobold and maly, or the 2nd minstrel draws the last piece...
Especially good vs zoo which is 75% of the meta in standard... Has like 1% winrate
Would like to say that this deck is extremely fun. The glaring holes are aggro match-ups, and the consistency of the deck is somewhat wanting. Mulligans also seem to be supremely important in this deck, as a wrong mulligan can cost you the game. That being said, I think Valeera seems to be a good choice to add in, albeit expensive if you don't already have her. Also leaving room for an Evasion seems like a decent choice as well. Myra I think can also be a good option for games in which its taking forever to draw your combo pieces. All in all, fun deck! I hope you continue to tweak it to become a top tier deck.... although sometimes I wish this deck would fly under the radar. Don't want to face anyone else playing this!
this deck literally loses to bots at rank 25, you either 1. Dont get the combo at all, 2. Get the combo but only have 1-2 damage cars and you cant do 30+ damage, or 3. instantly lose to any type of aggro, weapon removal, armor gain, etc
I had a control warrior harrison jones one of my necrium blades and then weapons project my other one. Ended up winning thanks to necrium vial!
I see all of these posts of people struggling to get the combo off. I must be getting all of their luck, because I've gotten the combo off about 8 games in a row. Love this deck.
Do you mind sending a little luck in my direction, because I could use it, too? I keep waiting patiently for a break, but before it comes, my opponent has enough for lethal. I'd appreciate it a lot. Thanks.
Not consistent. Ugh, I can never draw Elven Minstrel within my first 10-15 cards, but Assassinate and sudden betrayal always seem to show up on turn 1. This is a frustrating deck that makes you feel hopeless when you're sitting with duds, while you pray that your next card will be enough to kick off that combo. Kudos to the people that make it work.
Im gonna try your list for a while.
[edit] I took out 1 fan for Myra's Unstable Element. Having myra allows me to be a bit more liberal with using resources for removal.
[edit2] I'm currently 9-2 lol, this cant be accurate.
Valeera the Hollow has the potential to mess up the combo. I've been running her based on your suggestion which worked well in most games, but if playing the Kobold Illusionist with Valeera up you risk pulling another Kobald when relying on Necrium Blade to kick off the combo. I'm going to try running Sprint for a few games to get to the combo faster as I agree with you that Assassinate being fairly pointless in this deck.
Not very reliable. Although the combo works, you are either looking for your weapon or for the Elven Mistrel. I found the deck not really viable. Stats on other sites also learned it has a 45-ish% winrate. Thanks for sharing though!
I went 12-2 with this deck so far, but I took out the assassinate and a betrayal and put in 2 evasions in.
This deck is very good against control. It is instaloss againts aggro.. I'm playing it when see no aggrolocks in the meta.
No minstrel in opening hand pretty much equals you lost. Even if you get it, you are not guaranteed to get all the pieces. Combo is satisfying but feels so inconsistent. Great deck if you want to lose ranks.
Fun and cheap combo deck. Thanks :)
