The Art of Wocking
Hello there it´s GamerSenseis Jogono (www.twitch.tv/jogonohs)[online now]back with another in-depth Guide this time featuring:
MY JAWS THAT BITE, MY CLAWS THAT CATCH!!
I fell in love with this deck because I think it´s one of the hardest decks out there to play at the moment. I climbed with this deck to the top 1k on EU! It's similar to the old Razakus Priest where you need to play certain cards in advance and then finish off your enemy with a powerful combo. Before that your goal is mainly to draw a lot of cards and remove the enemies board.
So let's get into it.
The decklist I use at the moment is basically Steelo's list he used to get to the top 4 on HTC Seoul this year except one card. I highly dislike the Sandbinder and putting it out improves the deck imo. Therefor I am running now one weapon removal. The reason I liked Sandbinder before and dislike it now is because people figured out how broken Hemet is in this deck. With Hemet you can remove any non-Combo Cards you have left in your deck except 2 Hexes, 2 Volcanos and Hagatha the Witch . Every additional card in the 4+ manapool slows down your options to finish the game early.
To structure the cards in this deck I will separate them in three different sections: The Core, Removal and Draw.
- The Core: The Core are cards that need to kill your enemy.
So there is obviously Shudderwock. This guy needs to do dmg. So you need at least one Lifedrinker. I saw people only playing with one Lifedrinker. I don't know how i am feeling about this but it could maybe become a thing.
To not die in the one turn after you played your first or maybe second Shudderwock you need survivability. There are three different cards that help you out with that. First the Heal from Lifedrinker, the second is Mind Control Tech which is very situational. The best survival tool your Shudderwock can get isGlacial Shard. While still being random chosen (so he can freeze the same target multiple times if you are unlucky) it most of the time slows the enemy down enough for one turn.
And there is the „Infinite“ Part of Shudderwock. For this you need at least 2 Cards: Saronite Chain Gang and Grumble, Worldshaker or Zola the Gorgon. Sooo now it´s getting interesting. Because the order of the battlecries Shudderwock uses is totally random it can always happen that your [card]
[/card] triggers before you Saronite Chain Gang and you get no additionally Shudderwocks in your hand. So you want to minimize that chance of Grumble, Worldshaker getting played first (you can never put them to 0 though so you have to live with loosing a free game here and there because of it).
2 Ways to do that: First play as many Saronite Chain Gang as possible. Second play Zola the Gorgon so the chances of getting first Zola the Gorgon into Grumble, Worldshaker before one Saronite Chain Gang hits is pretty low. Best is you Zola the Gorgon the Saronite Chain Gang or play Saronite Chain Gang + Grumble, Worldshaker at turn 10 (take care that you dont overload if you want to do that). Also if you play Grumble, Worldshaker the turn before you play Shudderwock and your enemy doesnt clear it you get an guarantied Shudderwock into 1 Mana Grumble, Worldshaker to give you an 1 Mana Shudderwock.
Becoming an expert in this deck means to know how soon or late you can play Shudderwock. In some aggro matchups it sometimes is already enough if he Hagatha the Witchs the board and removes the enemy weapon and gain some life. But always remember he is your only win condition!
Next Section: Draw
You have 7 Draw Cards in the deck: 2x Mana Tide Totem, 2x Acolyte of Pain, 2x Far Sight and Hemet. If you have an empty board on turn 3 I tend to have this priority order:Mana Tide Totem > Acolyte of Pain> Far Sight. It depends on the matchup though. For Rogue for example I like tempo swings against his tempo swings, so I tend to hope for a high role on Far Sight also because the matchup is not that good for you. Against Odd paly I like the Acolyte for example. This is something you have to figure out on your own.
Hemet is probably the most broken card in this deck. I even keep it sometimes in my starting hand if I am against a clock deck with a slow early game.
Section: Removal
Because we want to survive until we drew all our cards we run a lot of removals. AoE wise we have Lightning Storm, Volcano, both 2 Times, one Mind Control Tech and Hagatha the Witch. I mostly play Hagatha the Witch because of the AoE and not because of the value. TAKE CARE THAT YOU DONT OVERDRAW WITH HER!! Lost me quite an amount of games. MC Tech also works with Shudderwock so take that in mind if you already played him and your enemy has more than 3 minions (take care Zola the Gorgon could copy that mc’ed target or it gets Grumble, Worldshaker and you might overdraw your Shudderwock). Single Target wise we have: 2x Glacial Shard (the random enemy freeze from shudderwock will help you survive if the enemy set up lethal, though it's random and can freeze the same enemy multiple times). 2x Lightning Bolt (some high legend player run 2x Earthschock for it but I am not sure on that yet) and 2x Hex.
There is also Prince Keleseth in the deck (You can cut him and the Acolyte of Pain for Doomsayer and thalnos). You can do dirty things with it turn 2 into Zola the Gorgon into playing him turn 4 again --> 4/5 Saronite Chain Gang . And you have Healing Rain for… well healing. The time I use Healing Rain the most is in the Turn before I play Shudderwock. It doesnt overload me and i get enough time to not die in the 2 enemy turns before I won. And Ooze against Odd Rogue and Vinecleaver.
So lets try to sum this up. You play an control deck that wants to stay alive until you get your TTK (Two Turn Kill). I think the most important thing is that you know how greedy you can become with playing more combo cards without dying. In matchups like Freeze Mage or CW you can take your time and play all the parts and go for ~4 Saronite Chain Gang and Grumble, Worldshaker and Zola the Gorgon (sometimes it´s worth to not play Hemet because it kills Zola the Gorgon). But sometimes you win with less. To figure that out takes some time but feels way more rewarding than just hitting face with Odd paly.
So I hope that you enjoyed that guide, I put quite some hours into it but i wanted to chare that awesome Decktype with you!
Because I also want to live the dream of a professional gamer I have to go for some sellout:
If you liked the Guide upvote this one and/or (I prefer that) come into my Stream, learn more (I am top 2k EU) and leave a follow (www.twitch.tv/jogonohs)! Even 5 new followers would mean a lot to me! I am also free for Coop Streams if the chemistry is right because playing together is allways more fun than just playing alone! :D Just hit me up!
Also I work for Gamer Sensei so here is my link if you want to book me: https://www.gamersensei.com/senseis/jogono
So enough sellout, hope you enjoy climbing the ladder with it!
Snicker-SNAAACK!
hi why hemet?
It's described...
Truly it's a niche card. It removes unneeded cards between you and your combo. But that being said, it's also not that great in shudderwock. Shudderwock thrives on stalling the game out so that it can combo late in the game. Hemet is there to "Speed things up", which is rather unnecessary for this deck archetype.
If you have him use him I guess? But there is 100% no need to craft him.
ty
I don't have Zola the Gorgon and Hemet, Jungle Hunter what should i craft first? ( I have Ancient Brewmaster).
I'd say Zola because she is much more useful in a variety of decks over Hemet
DON'T craft hemet! 100% not needed to make shudderwock work. The archetype already thrives on stalling a game out. Speeding things along with a trash legendary is not something you need. I run with Kalimos, Primal Lord and I am top 500 NA Legend currently. Hemet is trash. Please save the dust.
Man i already crafted it and going for Zola did u see that i made this post a month ago. And is going soo well....I just burn all my cards and instant draw my combo cards. I am glad I didn;t craft Zola because i have Ancient Brewmaster . Which does the same thing.
I very much prefer Primordial Drake over Hagatha because it doesn't clog up your hand when you go into the infinite combo.
It's a 4/8 taunt, so almost effectively +8 health vs +5 armor.
There are many times when the random spell from Hagatha prevents those delicious 1 Mana wocks from returning.
What makes people run Hagatha over Primordial?
I don't know... I recently got Hagatha the Witch, put her in this deck, but later removed her again. She was more often annoying then useful. To be fair, she did win me a game without even having to play Shudderwock. Still, i agree with you, i also replaced her with Primordial Drake.
Besides that, i started playing a version without Prince Keleseth and with Murmuring Elemental. Not sure which i prefer most. If you draw the prince early it's definitely the better deck, but if you don't, well. Maybe the Murmuring deck is a bit more consistent.
Agreed, I've never quite got the point of Hagath.
Primordial drake also has great synergy with the double battlecry minion, which I like better than kaleseth.
Great deck! Having so much fun with this!
Did some adjustments since i don't have all the cards:
Hagatha the Witch replaced with Marin the Fox. This doesn't really replace the purpose of Hagatha, but it's a fun battlecry for Shudderwock. Floods the opponent's board with useless stuff. Plus if you manage to get the treasure (maybe with Volcano) they are usually pretty good as well. Except for Golden Kobold, you can hardly ever play that with this deck.
Prince Keleseth + Acolyte of Pain replaced with Bloodmage Thalnos + Doomsayer (as suggested). Instead of better board presence to keep yourself alive, you just clear his board (Lightning Storm) or at least adsorb 7 damage.
Gluttonous Ooze replaced with Acidic Swamp Ooze, thought about Corrosive Sludge but it's not removed by Hemet, Jungle Hunter and the 2 mana card is easier to play early game.
Zola the Gorgon replaced with Ancient Brewmaster, just to get the battlecry in... not sure if there is a better replacement. Sadly i don't have Baleful Banker either.
So my deck suffers a bit from the card replacements, but i'm still at a 67% winrate (rank 19 though, but climbing) and laughing my ass of most of the time!
I'm sorry this decks dependency on Hemet is sad. I have come across this deck a handful of times on ladder from 5-Legend and beat it EVERY single time with my more standardized Shudderwock deck. Hemet doesn't really speed it up like you think it should.
you're using a trash filler legendary I guess in an attempt to make it work. But the deck still takes quite awhile to go off.
Can you help me? Make a top(#1..../#2....) with what cards i should craft. I don't have :Zola the Gorgon, Hemet, Jungle Hunter, Far Sight, Gluttonous Ooze (I have Corrosive Sludge). Until i craft them all. Thanks!!
Thx man! You are te Best!
Edit: the*
Yes, thank you, but what about if I replace Zola with Ancient Brewmaster? Does this change something? I'm just asking because I have 1400 dust and want to buy one of them. I'm not saying that this is the best idea.. I'm just askin' if this change something.
It's a 4-mana card. Why cant I play with prince?
I played with this deck after winning with my regular shudderwock deck (without Hemet), and couldn't win with it a single time while losing 2 ranks. Can anybody tell my how to play it better?
I didn't craft hagatha because it will really won't help me with this meta, I mostly play against secret mages, aggro decks, and even warlocks. They always kill me by turn 6-7 (before i can put hagatha). I think this deck is much slower than the regular shudderwock and doesn't work above rank 14 since i lost 3 ranks with it.
hagatha actually saves you from aggro decks, If you can't survive till 8 with this deck you are either unlucky, mulligan wrong, or bad in general
