Now is a great time to revisit this decklist that began last month. I took a moratorium once the Call To Arms nerf came, but have jumped back in and pushed to rank 5 with this deck and am continuing to test the waters. Lets begin.
Below is the original guide from the initial list, which I used to climb from rank 15 to rank 8
1. The quest is NOT mandatory on turn one. In fact, I may hold off until turns 5 or 7 to bait my opponent to cash in on hard removal. The way to succeed with this deck is to bait out both copies of Spellbreaker, Ironbeak Owl, Hex, Polymorph, Siphon Soul, Assassinate, Vilespine Slayer, Naturalize, and Brawl, before you play Lynessa. Once these cards are removed from the game, the opponent has very little to use to stop the Lynsessa play.
2. Zola + Lynessa is damn near automatic victory, but sometimes you need to play defensive or take advantage of tempo and play Zola on something else. For example, I won a game simply because I used Zola on a Righteous Protector. You also want to stall as late as possible to play Lynessa and Zola (10 Mana) and lead the game into fatigue. Also - be aware that Potion of Heroism will draw cards, this is why I am not running Blessing of Wisdom.
4. Stonehill defender is a sure shot to grant you a Tarim or a Tirion, and if you get them, 9/10 times you should take them. If you are looking to spice it up, throw in a second Stonehill
5. As a solid midrange piece, the Glass Knight is insanely powerful. With Truesilver, Corpsetaker, Applebaum, and Scalehide, there are plenty of ways to regain divine shield and dominate the board. Let the opponent Polymorph the Knight! And a turn 4-5 (or 3-4 w/ coin) Knight into Truesilver is game changing.
8. Be frugal with your Equality cards! Only use them against dangerously threatening boards, you only have two! As a turn 10 hard removal, play the Wild Pyromancer and Sound the Bells four times for a deal 4 to all minions and gain 4 charges on the quest.
9. Uther Of The Ebon Blade is not a required card, but it does help. Getting a 2/2 body to play buffs on makes a great deal of swing to the game. Also, it gives you a lifesteal weapon, armor, and helps to chop down mid sized enemy minions. Plus, its fun to summon the Horsemen behind your 21/38 Divine Shield, Taunt, deathrattle: summon two steeds, Lynessa.
Here are what I have found to be critical points in finding success with this deck:
1. There is a rampant amount of aggressive decks, which is what I had expected to happen. Even Shaman, Odd Paladin, Odd Rogue, and Token Druid are not our friends, and therefore I had to slot in 2x Equalities, 2x Pyromancers, and 2x Consecrations. Beat the early game, and force your opponent to battle for the board. I tried to use more Lifesteal effects, but what I have been finding is that you will be rushed to kill off your opponent before they can beat you down so pressuring your opponent into check positions are vital.
2. I have found Taunts to be more of an issue than minions that need to be silenced, I am looking right at you Even Warlock. So, I chose the Black Knight over Spellbreaker and it has served me well.
3. Call To Arms really felt underwhelming after the nerfs, but only due to the fact that the meta caused it to be less effective in this deck. I found that I needed to have my Pyromancers early, and couldn't afford to summon both copies off of one card. Perhaps if things slow down, 2x copies won't be necessary, but until then it is better to play safe.
Mulligan; the meta is saturated with decks, so here is a general breakdown.
- Aggro: Righteous Protector, Pyromancer, Equality, Stonehill, Consecration, Corpsetaker, Applebaum - Play the quest once you begin to buff. Control: Quest, Loot Hoarder, Glass Knight, Truesilver, Tarim.
Swaps: This deck is extremely expensive, but here are a few swaps that may help: Corpsetaker, Uther, and The Glass Knight are all cards that I believe make this deck powerful, but are not necessary. Perhaps you may want to add a second Truesilver, Rotten Applebaum, Wild Pyromancer, Blessing of Kings, or even put in some of these cards I considered adding (but did not find space for): Adaptation, Hydrologist, Chillblade Champion, Saronite Chain Gang, Tar Creeper, Spellbreaker, and Vicious Fledgling.
After giving up on the aggressive route with many 1-drops and low-cost buffs (during the Un'goro days) I tried a more Mid-Range version of Quest Paladin. It still didn't feel strong enough as I couldn't find the right balance between buffs, sticky minions, healing potential and offensive power to threaten slower decks. My biggest issue was the 3-mana slot since there are so many options (Stonehill Defender for additional value, Tar Creeper for solid anti-aggro, Benevolent Djinn/Paragon of Light in context with The Glass Knight etc.)
Now, your version is definitely more on the control-ish side and after a few games I have to admit it feels pretty viable. The only cards I'm unsure about are Rotten Applebaum and sadly enough, Bolvar, Fireblood (replaced them with a second copy of Stonehill Defender and Vicious Scalehide). Double Stonehill is IMHO just too good to pass up when playing Paladin and in regards to Bolvar: similar to Tirion Fordring he is very susceptible to Silence, his attack buff is slow (most opponents remove any Divine Shield on sight) and if you're going Bolvar into Spikeridged Steed it's literally asking for Spellbreaker to show up, leaving a very sad 5 mana 1/7. If Cubelock gets nerfed and most decks stop running double Silence there could be a time for him to shine but at the moment, I don't see it.
Anyway, thumbs up for the effort!
Cubelock would have to be it’s own mulligan/plan, I actually enjoy playing Cube. I always always always save an equality consecration for Guldan, and also a Cube board coming on turn 7-8. I agree, Bolvar isn’t really important, i just love the card design and have a lot of good success with it. And I know silences are prevalent, but my goal is to fish those cards out and end the game with a Lynessa or Galvadon, because often I can beat down my opponent before turn 10. I see a lot of potential for this deck, and am riding the success to rank 5 with it bow
I mentioned Cubelock (more specifically, Voidlord) as the main reason for double Silence, not regarding your matchup vs. that deck :) I've played some more games and found that leaving the 5-mana slot empty is somewhat awkward so I might fill it with a copy of Faceless Manipulator. What to take out for it? Well, I think there are two options: Potion of Heroism (see your note) or Mossy Horror (since they'll probably nerf Call to Arms to hit the various aggressive Paladin builds; nevertheless it's a viable tech for now, props to you!). Lastly, weapon removal would be fine, but I think you can survive without it (and I don't own Harrison Jones).
Running against Voidlord, manipulators are really good to steal. I’ll be going back through this list once our needs hit and see what we can salvage, For now, I don’t see any reason this deck would hurt, and only see a benefit for the control aspect.
I did run 2 Pyros, and what I found is that the Pyro+Equality combo was too clunky, and killing off my board was too costly with other tempo decks. Also, pulling two Pryos off a Call to Arms is devastating, because one spell kills them both. I found that just one worked well, and I generally would save for a turn 10 Sound the Bells play to kill off any hard tempo swings for the opponent. You can put a second copy in if you want, I would take out a Corpsetaker for it!
Thanks a lot! Honestly it is a control deck, I played a match against my friend who is in Legend yesterday and he played his meta refined Cubelock deck, and I won and did not even play my quest. Its a really fun deck with tons of upside. I really believe it is a tier two deck, and with one or two minions under 4 mana in the next few expansions, I see a lot of potential for Galvadon.
I ran into this issue as well early on in the first edits and at one point I ran 2 Loot Hoarders, 1 Divine Favor, 1 Blessing of Wisdom, 2 Call to Arms, and 2 Potion of Heroism. Over the course of a few games, I found that I had fantastic draw, but I burned out far too quick and relied too much on Lynessa. One method to combat this was to add in a second Stonehill for RNG "draw: but I decided to rely less on the tempo drop plays and utilize the tempo of the minions - Bolvar, Corpsetaker, Applebaum, Glass Knight. What I found to be most effective, against control, is to get those early game draws quick in Potion of Heroism, Loot Hoarder, Stonehill Defender, and even used Zola to bounce back value minions. However, your big ticket is Call to Arms and pulling out those Loot Hoarders, its essentially draw and play 3 of your sub 2 mana minions, plus draw even more from the Loot Hoarder death rattles. Mulligan can be tricky, but remember it is not necessary to play quest on one, and against Aggro its better to mulligan it away for the hopes of a Protector.
Aggro is my favorite matchup, specifically Paladin. My ideal hand would include a Loot Hoarder, Consecration, Stonehill Defender, Sound the Bells, Spikeridge Steed, Sunkeeper Tarim, Corpsetaker, Rotten Applebaum, and Wild Pyromancer. If you are able to pull 2 of these in your starting hand, you're in good shape. I found that by putting too much healing effect in the deck, I would consistently stay above 25 Health, but did not have enough gas to stay on pace turns 5-8. Dont be afraid of taking face damage, as long as you are above 15 Health, there is plenty to pick you back up with the lifesteal effects, Uther, Applebaum, and Truesilver. Also, Zola on Applebaum on turn 6 against an even Paladin is soul crushing, or even just getting a buff on your taunts!
I often found that Manipulator was too greedy, but copying a Voidlord or a Lich King from your opponent is pretty sweet. And i actually took an ooze out, it was always a dead card and I hated having to let it take a slot in my hand. And post nerds this deck will be revisited, because of Call to Arms gets broken it will need a bit more cycle, possible double Potion of Heroism? The meta will decide
