Now that we are a week into the new expansion, the meta seems to be more defined than before and most powerful decks are standing out so far. Ranging from even/odd Paladins to Shudder Shaman, the meta seems to be really diverse and open to discovery. If you're facing too many control decks and are looking for a successful deck with a high skill cap, this deck is for you.
Recently, Rage hit #1 legend using his quest rogue list. What's unique about this list is that it runs 2 copies of vicious scalehide in favour of the more traditional fire flies. Since the nerf hammer struck down Patches, most Quest Rogue lists stopped running Valeera the Hollow due to the fact that it was too slow against most of the aggressive archetypes, and control match-ups were a win way more often than not.
However, with the potential for more control decks in the newly formed meta, as well as the fact that most aggressive decks have slowed down because of the rotations, Valeera seems to be a very solid choice against control and, more often than not, aggressive decks. Through the use of cards like Glacial Shard & Wax Elemental, you can easily extend the game long enough so that you would get an opportunity to play your Valeera, which would ensure that you would never run out of juice for the remainder of the game.
Your primary goal is to complete the quest as fast as possible, while maintaining a reasonable health total that guarantees your survival. The best possible 'bounce' target to complete the quest with is Novice Engineer, since it gets you even closer to completing the quest with every draw. This deck is quite difficult to pilot, so don't be put down if you find it difficult to play, even many professionals think so.

As usual, video that spotlights the high-end potential of the deck. If you are confused on how to pilot the deck, make sure to check the video out, as he explains every single move he makes.

I wonder if this deck can survive Wild...?
Maybe at legend where people play more control decks. Not climbing to legend though there's way too much aggro paladin.
Great deck -- Valeera the Hollow is a must.
Many of my games have ended with Valeera pulling her weight. Just climbed from 15 to 10 in short order, we'll see if the meta here calls for anything different -- but so far, it's extremely effective. Thanks!
Why is valeera important? Is it because of the clone card thingy?
and if someone has lethal you can stealth and get 5 armor for a turn
Quest will work all the way up to Legend. Currently at Rank 2, cant make it legend because i keep making silly mistakes.
You're wrong!! In aggro matchups when you are with low health you can double scalehides to heal and keep board presence!
As someone who runs gross odd paladin I can confirm that scalehides can clear an entire board AND heal for full. I watched a quest rogue go from 3 health to 30.
DK. Deck is rather weak against Aggro. A second fan of knives buys you an extra clear vs Paladin, however they will refill next round. A DK buys you an extra turn that you can turn into a win
I'd give it a try. I've faced lots of aggro matchups and the majority of those were when I was with 5 stars (a win meant I was going a rank up). I remember when I climbed to rank 1 facing an even pally. In turn 8 I was completely destroyed, but on turn 9 I got Valeera, got stealth, and in turn 10 I healed myself 20 hp and I was able to clear the borad thanks to Scalehide. That gave me the win I needed. Now I'm legend for the first time and waiting for the season chest to see if I get some nice stuff! Good luck on your climbing!!
EDIT: also one advice: I encountered one guy who surrendered (but he destroyed me) when I was rank 1 4 stars. Now, if I'm only trying one deck in legend and I see I'm facing some rank 1 guy and I don't mind being rank 17000 legend I also surrender. I encourage people who don't mind being a low legend number to do this. You're making people happy lol
I've been playing this deck like crazy for 15 hours in two days (lol). So far I achieved climbing and mantaining on rank 2 and I'll play this to see if I can also get to legend. Amazing how this deck works and can't imagine how this worked prenerf (I crafted Caverns two days ago, I wasm't sure, but now I have 0 regrets!).
Summing up: Valeera is a must for me. I am able to get lots of tempo by copying sonya and rushing (copying scalehides for the late if I have the wrong cards) or just by getting my board filled with southsea/stonetusk's. I've been able to counter some agressive aggro decks with glacial shard by freezing rogue's face or stopping some hunter's beasts, so if you think the game is gonna be against some hard aggro deck you should definitely look for glacial and some bounce cards (shadowstep if possible). The only thing I need to look further is the use of preparation. I've seen myself using it to play 0 mana mimic pod but I believe sometimes that's an error (preferably waiting for completing the quest then using it).
EDIT: Rank 1 right now!!!!!!
Thanks a lot for the deck!!
Pre Nerf it was insane, You could complete quest by turn 2.
horrific- why did you have to bring this back? yikes. I just saw some netdecker with this, figured quest rogue would back on the front page
the salt is real. Given cube lock exists, I feel _zero_ remorse playing this deck.
this deck was around before the last patch
In control matchups, it's crazy how much bounce you have left even after finishing the quest for 20+ damage burst for barely any mana. The DK has helped me with lethal many times. I usually duplicate a charge minion with the DK hero power, and return one to hand, which basically adds an additional card to my hand that didn't being in my deck. I do this multiple times and save them up so that when the taunt wall is clear (e.g. against control/cubelock and hadronox druid), I have at least 4 charge minions for burst.
Againt aggro (and againt control too actually), you're constantly playing from behind because you have no pressure nor taunt to compete for the board. That's why stall is so important. The moment you complete your quest though, the game almost always swings immediately, and Vicious Scalehide only helps with that by healing a ton in the late game when you might need that extra health for that one or two extra turns you need to seal the game. Against aggro, it's slightly unfavoured to complete the quest in time, but against control or midrange, oh boy.
I am quite surprised and happy to see that the deck is working so well for me. Vicious scalehide against aggro match-ups make a big difference in my opinion. With all of kraken's year cards rotating, this deck actually can be competitive and I applaud rage for climbing that high with it!
Give it a try if you haven't yet, you won't regret it.
Here is a video showcasing the deck in action, I hope you enjoy it
Make changes to the deck until u feel better, my quest rogue list is faster, I play against this and I win. imo the meta is really fucking aggro cz paladins, druids, mages and other rogues. I don't have Zola or DK Valeera. I use fire fly and the 3 mana elemental who gives u 2 more 1 mana elemental, i have to put 2 fan of knives cz paladins and thats all... I climb 14-9 really fast
Have luck
Currently 0-3 faced three straight fast decks, aggro druid and 2x Hunter.I felt like the deck has ZERO chance of winning, takes too long to get quest done unless VERY lucky getting Sonja and the boar which did not happen for me.I got Wax elemental's steady and only one way to replay him so it was a losing battle from turn 1,never felt in any game.
As first psoter mentioned geting rid of Valeera i feel is a good answer,i got Valeera in opening hand 3 games a row and was obviously a dead card and with quest card that is like 1 card playable in opening hand lol.
People often like to downplay LUCK but seeing the first 3 hands i had to play with each game,NOBODY is winning any of them.Of course there are so many players playing that you could easily get 100 lucky quest rogue players with nice draws, nice matchups and come away thinking great deck. The deck lost 4 cards that made it more reliable so imo it is a non reliable deck.I wil give it two more games w/o Valeera to see if helps with early consistency.
BTW the mist clunky card is Minstrel and he is obviously badly needed, but trying to get that combo means 5 mana, means your likely doing nothing but drawing your minions while opponent is doing serious dmg by turn 5/6.
BTW 3 games, got quest done once by turn 8 and versus aggro it is lol gg.
I'm playing version with second Fan of Knives instead of Valeera the Hollow and this deck works flawlessly... Currently having score 14-3 from rank 5 with 0 stars to rank 3 with 1 star :)
And I really think without Sonya Shadowdancer or Zola the Gorgon this deck would be significantly worse. Consider crafting these, killing Lich King with 6x Southsea Deckhand and Sonya Shadowdancer is really funny!
