Yeah, turn 4 Mountain Giant is tough to deal with. Best hope is to be able to build up a 10/10 with Divine Spirit and Inner Fire to kill it with. Next best hope is to protect your early board for an extra turn with a Tar Creeper and use that turn to draw a bunch of cards or build a wider board which is hard for him to deal with since the Giant can only kill one minion a turn. But certainly, it's difficult to overcome. SW Death would also be helpful against Spiteful Druid, which is a difficult matchup for this deck, although even then there's a 20% chance they get Tyrantus and it's not even useful anyway.
So certainly SW Death would be useful in some cases. The reason I haven't included it is that conditional spells are really frustrating in this deck. Also 3 mana is actually pretty expensive for this deck. Often you want to either Lyra or Dragon Soul and then jam a bunch of spells in a turn, in which case expensive spells are difficult to use, and it also really stinks if there's no valid target. So I've found it a little clunky, but if you find you're facing a ton of early Mountain Giant and Spiteful Druid, then it might be worth it.
Deck is fun and pretty solid too. Very enjoyable to play.
Have you tried Wild Pyromancer or Vivid Nightmare ?
No, I haven't. Vivid Nightmare seems like it could fit very well, but I don't have it in my collection. I think if I had it, I would swap out Acolyte of Pain for it, at least for a while to see how it works out. If you try it, I'd be curious to hear how it works for you. As for Wild Pyromancer, I think Spirit Lash accomplishes a similar effect right now. It doesn't stick a minion on the board but doesn't require an additional card to trigger so is more consistent and the healing is quite valuable in certain matchups. I've found Spirit Lash incredibly valuable against odd hunter and odd pally which I saw a lot of on ladder, but if you're facing a meta where the face healing part isn't useful, then I could see switching it out for Wild Pyromancer.
I think this deck would really benefit from Witches Cauldron; Shaman spells all seem to be relatively cheap and if you have enough cheap minions in the deck that if you drop the Cauldron on the board with a 2-3 minions, you get solid value and enough low cost spells that will easily give you a proc off of the Dragon Soul
Also Dragon Soul decks have a very weird gimmick, as you need a nice mix of spells and minions because if you rely entirely on spells then you'll have an empty board/hand the entire game and won't get a lot of value off of anything. I'd think of cutting a couple of spells in exchange for a few low cost and/or beefy minions which will give Witches Cauldron more value if you decide to run it. Also Lyra will provide a LOT of value late game if you drop her on a board and can rattle off a couple of 1 cost spells so because she's in your deck you can afford to cut a few.
The issue you identify with Dragon Soul is certainly real, and it's why this deck has a ton of draw, so you can hope to have both minions and spells. It's also why the Witchwood Piper helps the consistency of the deck, because that huge draw depends entirely on having Northshire Cleric, and Witchwood Piper will get it for you if you couldn't draw it early. The issue with Witch's Cauldron is that you don't want to be killing your minions with this deck. You want to keep as many alive as possible and trade efficiently and heal, drawing cards until you happen upon a win condition, either Inner Fire, Lyra, or Dragon Soul.
yeah, mages are pretty tough. Thankfully, they are not common on the ladder, and even when you encounter them, they are often odd mage and therefore don't have polymorph. Hard removal is pretty rough against this deck, but there isn't a lot of that in this meta right now.
