Climbed to rank 75 with this deck. It crushes cubelock and is also great against shudderwock shaman. You see guilty on my friends list? He was rank 3000, here he is 1800 and now he is rank 350 by climbing with this deck.
The best common matchups
1) Cubelock, you can deal damage from turn 1 to about turn 5-7 using minions and some cheap spells. This should make them use the heals that they have drawn and cause them to make some sub-optimal plays. From there they will normally lack pressure and you can burn them down, especially once you draw Aluneth. Make sure to get as much value from pinging as you can, although once you draw aluneth you likely will not be able to ping as much as you will need to have mana to play all your cards. Just be sure to calculate damage and think ahead.
2) Spiteful decks, both spiteful druid and spiteful priest are very favourable. The current lists which run keleseth often don't have enough early game that you can do alot of damage with minions and build a wide board using Vex Crow. Even once they start summoning big minions, they won't be able to gain board control as they will only be able to kill a couple minions a turn whilst the rest of your minions keep hitting face. Just be sure to play around Primordial Drake for druid, and Duskbreaker for priest.
3) Baku hunter, this is a closer matchup and will take a while to learn how to play against it. You should be able to win by gaining early board control and then racing them. The most difficult part is knowing when to hard control the board, and when to go face. Often you can gain a massive board with vex crow, but still lose because you were not aggressive enough.
4) Control Priest, (the one that runs anduin, eg. something like theo's deck). This is a good matchup because they lack early board clear, unless they run duskbreaker or get a very lucky pyromancer, but even then they will have to draw duskbreaker and another dragon and it will likely be their first play of the game.
Generic Mulligan
Vs paladins (assuming you don't know if they are odd, even or murloc)
Best: 2x Mana Wyrm, Arcanologist, Mad Bomber, arcane missles, Sorcerer's Apprentice if going second or have a cheap spell (just think about your curve and what you plan to play when. Dropping a naked apprentice on t2 vs a paladin is generally not very strong though).
Okay: Breath of Sindragosa, Frostbolt (only if going 2nd).
Vs Warlock (hopefully traditional cubelock, control cubelock is not as good as a matchup)
Best: 2x Mana Wyrm, Arcanologist, Sorcerer's Apprentice, Mad Bomber. Aluneth
Okay: Kirin Tor Mage (if you also have Arcanologist), Primordial Glyph (if you have Sorcerer's Apprentice), Polymorph (if you already have a strong curve)
Vs Priest and Druid
Best: 2x Mana Wyrm, Arcanologist, Sorcerer's Apprentice, Mad Bomber, Frostbolt (if going 2nd or have apprentice) Mad bomber is good as a 3/2 contest a 1/3 better than a 2/3 does.
Okay: Aluneth, keep if you have a decent play already.
Vs Rogue
Best: 2x Mana Wyrm, Arcanologist, Sorcerer's Apprentice, Frostbolt (if going 2nd or have and minion).
Okay: Arcane missles and Breath of Sindragosa are okay if you have Sorcerer's Apprentice.
Variations on the deck and replacements
Budget players:
1) Aluneth is a key card and your win percentage will drop significantly if you are playing against tier 1-3 decks without this card. However you can try and replace it with value midrange cards such as The Lich King (if you have him), Cobalt Scalebane, or even value cards like toki, the time tinker or Frost Lich Jaina if you have them.
2) Primordial Glyph. I would highly reccomend crafting this card as it is so versitile and a great card overall. However until you get the dust you can replace it with cheap spells such as 2nd Mirror Image, Flame Geyser, or even Arcane Explosion if you are playing vs alot of paladins.
3) Pyroblast. If you have Archmage Antonidas then add him. If you do I would reccomend taking out a Mad Bomber to add a 2nd Mirror Image so you have more cheaper spells to play with him. If not then you should just add a second Counterspell or a cheap spell and hope you don't come to a point of needing pyroblast (if you play vs alot of cubelocks you will definitely need it).
"Tech choices" depending on meta:
-If there are alot of paladins then it becomes quite an rng based game. I would reccomend taking out the Polymorph and adding an extra Mirror Image. If it is mostly odd paladain, I would also remove the Breath of Sindragosa and add an Arcane Explosion.
-If the meta is cubelock dominated, then I would reccomend taking out one Mad Bomber and adding a second counter spell.
-I am still experimenting so let me know suggestions of tech cards for classes that you like, especially newer decks such as hadronox taunt druid.
-Overall cards worth to consider adding: harrison jones, 2nd mirror image, 2nd counterspell, arcane explosion, knife juggler.
Definitely Frost lich jaina. You will lose significantly more games vs warlocks though if you don't run aluneth.
decent deck remove some of the cards like mad bomber and it might be good
This deck won me 1 game. I don't feel like it's any good currently... Guess I'll have to join the even paladins because no matter what mage I pick I lose.
Edit : Yep after giving it a fair chance it just doesn't cope with anything too well. It barely wins 1 loses 1 if You're lucky. Palas, Druids and Priests are flipcoin
Does horrible against any competitve hunter
Wins with some unrefined decks/baku rogues.
This deck is working better for me than all 6 variations of aggro odd paladin I've used.
Kudos to you
Deck looks awesome, definitely will try it! Thanks! =)
aren't there a lot of gaps in legend
- 1 Arcane Intellect
+1 Counterspell
A second counters spell is definitely great, however arcane intellect is one of the core cards of the deck and I would strongly recommend taking something else out instead
Cinderstorm instead of mad bomber seems like it should be ok
Hello. Nice deck Sir Salty. I’ve been looking for a tempo mage that doesn’t feel brainless like the previous secret mage and this looks like it. I find the mad bombers too random though - on more than one occasion I came off worse than my opponent. Had it drop all three bombs in my face once. I have subbed one for a counter spell. What else would you recommend for the second one?
Edit: look forward to your guide and mulligan
Diggin' this version of tempo mage. Got a match here vs. one of those 'new' paladins... he is a bit slow (no pun), but... well, you'll see.
I'm glad you enjoyed the deck and it's really cool you made a video about it.
However, I don't appreciate the fact you gave me 0 credit even though you are using my exact list and have even decided to advertise yourself here. All you would have had to do was put my name in the deck title and in the introduction mentioned I made the deck. I would ask you to keep this in mind for any future videos you may make.
Thanks!
Are you kidding?
You just took Trump's Crow Mage and added bombers for Antonidas and I don't see any credit given.
Copying a deck is a completely different situation from making a video and then advertising it in the comment section of where you took it from without giving any credit.
And regardless I only saw Trump's deck after I made my own. Two good players can make 2 very similar decks without having to plagirise one another ^^
He theorycrafted it before Witchwood even launched.
If anything this guys should give credit to trump, not you.
Yes I saw his deck on the front page, and yes I know it was made before mine, but I never clicked on it or copy pasted it am changed cards like you are accusing me of.
If it pleases you I give Trump hella lot of credit. But not for this deck because it was just coincidence that my deck happen to be similar. He has made me the player who I am today and was the first YouTube and streamer I learnt from all the way back in open beta and he is one of my favourite streamers. However I don't generally bother looking at his deck crafts as he sadly is no longer a player of the calibre he once was. Any decks I view or take inspiration from now days is mostly pro players who are actually playing and testing at legend rank who post decks on their twitter.
If it is too hard to comprehend that a top legend player makes a similar deck to another pro player (even thought the 10th of the deck and even the play style is different, trumps deck is much more focused on maintaining a board and having arch mage for decks like warrior that board damage is enough. My deck is much more revolved around punishing cube locks and insta burn with aluneth into prob last.).
In conclusion: I respect Trump and give him a lot of credit. However I didn't copy, or even take inspiration from his version of a vex crow Tempo mage, it was purely coincidence that 2 Tempo mage decks could be similar (wow if you make a Tempo mage deck it better have atleast 10 cards different from trumps deck or you are copying him). Finally, I am totally okay with him making a video, pleased actually. Him not giving me recognition is unfortunate, but acceptable. Him advertising himself in the comments (which is against hearthpwn rules if I am correct, if not its not rly my point anyways), especially when not giving me recognition is personally rude. I was civil and simply asked him to be more mindful of it in the future. Anyways please refrain from being so ignorant thinking that 2 players can't possibly make similar decks of the same archetype.
Dude all you did is:
- Antonidas
- 1 Breath of Sindragosa
- 1 Mirror Image
+ 1 Polymorph
+ 2 Mad Bomber
That's it.
So please refrain from being so ignorant thinking people will buy your bullshit – you have obviously taken inspiration from Trump who have made this deck weeks before you. You did some minor changes to it, but the core of his deck (90%) remained identical. I barely play HS, I don't even watch Trump and I saw his deck, so a legend player like you, who is very active on hearthpwn, couldn't possibly miss it – it was on top here and still is.
Nothing wrong about it, just ironic.
People asking for replacement cards, this is a pay to win game at some level. If you really want to win, you must put some money into the game unless you grind nonstop. If nothing else, buying the pre-orders each expansion should help you have enough cards to make 2-3 decks.
You really don't have to invest anything but time in the game, and a little patience goes a long way even if you're just a casual player. It did for me.
Also, grinding isn't nearly the best way to earn gold, especially with the new quests. Winning 30 games every day is indescribably harder than summoning 20 minions that cost 2 or less or winning a single game with one of two classes. I don't play even close to 30 games a day, let alone win that amount.
I'm f2p, but I also played since beta so doesnt rly count. However if you put enough effort into it over time you should gather enough cards to get to legend with a couple on tier 1 decks
