It CAN slow the deck down or mill you if you drop it with Aluneth out, but if you manage to pair it with an Intellect early you're usually golden.
This deck does it but hole hell every win feels like cheating.. it's not fun.. It wins.. but its not fun.
I would suggest Spiteful Priest then... wins always feel fair.
How would you play this deck, would you just wait til round 4 and save your spells as much as possible?
play like a tempo mage/secret mage.
I think.
The classic mana wym + arcanologist + kirin tor is as as powerful as ever, or if you don't get your early game minions hopefully you can get a swing turn at turn 4 or 5 with vex crow and some of the cheap spells, and glyphed ones too.
Early minion damage, then Aluneth and transition into burn is usually how you win.
So would you need to clear the board or Just focus face? Because it seems like the deck drops off in the late game
You need to know when to do which, this deck definitely requires both. Trade to protect valuable minions like vex crow or a high damage wyrm, and also make trades when you can disrupt your opponent's play (esp. paladins). Generally if you're ahead on the board you don't make trades.
You can definitely run out of cards in the late game, against slower decks it is worth it to keep Aluneth in the mulligan. If you have antonidas in hand, consider saving all of your cheap spells. If you go for this plan you can focus on the board a bit more to clear your enemy's threats.
keep Aluneth against slower deck.
Trade to keep most minion as you can.
Play around each class board clear like Defile ,swipe or fan of knives etc.
apart from that push most face damage as you can.
when your opponent get low health, they'll force to make a bad play to survive.
and now you winning.
if you lose the board contest, to can't start to push the face damage enough.
For Sorcerer's Apprentice, would you generally save one for antonidas later in the game?
Also, if you've had a slow start against a control-type deck and haven't managed to push enough minion damage to the face, antonidas could possibly be your win condition, as he'll give you a ton of extra burn that you really want
i crafted aluneth about 3 months ago.. probably the best craft i ever did.. difficult to say in the new world of witchwood though, could be a complete waste, but it is a super solid card
Antonidas is a much better craft because it is in classic and goes in many mage decks. Aluneth will rotate out next year. They are both worth it if you like mage decks
If you really want to play Tempo mage, I recommend crafting Aluneth as this type of mage with Antonidas likely wont last for a whole lot longer once the meta settles in my opinion. But on the other hand Antonidas is a classic card so that'll be standard forever, so its up to you mostly. But heres a decklist I'm running rn without Antonidas (even tho I personally have him) that's working better than this Vex Crow list.

Best replacement for Antionidas? I know nothing really takes its place, but what else would work?
curio collector.. i stick it down if i have aluneth and that is an intimidating 4 mana 7/7 that only gets bigger, or sucks up potential face damage
you can put in another pyro.
I don't know how you guys are winning with this deck. I'm at rank 25 (yeah, I haven't played standard in months), and lose 2/3 of the time. Even at rank 25 everyone is netdecking, and this just doesn't cut it. Not enough removal, no AOE.
you are doing something very wrong. this deck against most decks right now is stupid good
