About myself

I'm a main mage (golden!) player that has hit legend many seasons. You can find me streaming mage deck variations in www.twitch.tv/rerroll   [LIVE!!]

This deck is the one I used this season to hit legend. Previous season I used http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/96681-top200-legend-eu-mage-tricks

Deck guide (improvement of the guide in Mage tricks 1.0)

Mulligan

To win your games  you have to pressure your enemy since turn 1. Try to deal as much damage as possible and force him to defend himself. You will need to look for:

  1. Mana wyrm + frostbolt
  2. undertaker + (thalnos/loot hoarder/golem/zombie chow)
  3. mad scientists & zombie chow. Always look for these.

Note: This deck has a higher winrate when you start 2nd because of the coin. If you have coin, a solid starting hand is mana wyrm (t1) -> coin+kirin tor+secret (t2)

However, usually you will want to discard your secrets. You want to play them with mad scientist, not from hand!

Early game

As I said, build as much pressure as you can. You have great tempo generators in this deck: mad scientists, kirin tor, wyrms, undertakers and zombie chow. Take advantage of that.

If you can fill your board with the small minions and protect them with secrets your opponent will have a hard time.

Mid and late game

This deck can be both super agressive and controllish. If you dealt enough damage early game you can keep being agressive in the mid game and go for face/lethal. Be careful tho, because some classes have huge heals (pally) and big taunts (handlock).

On the other hand you can also play as a control kind of deck. Azure drakes, sylvannas, rag, faceless, black knight and flamestrike will help you. Another sick combo is Water elemental + argus (priests will have a hard time removing this 4/7).

The secrets

I change the secrets I use depending on the current meta.

Right now I'm using 2x counterspells, 2x Mirror entity

  1. Counterspell: Must-have. Prevents aoe, denies enemy secrets, protects you from flare, etc. Play it turn 10+ with a sylvannas and watch your enemy surrender after his mindcontrol/siphonsoul/sheep/hex gets countered.                                                                       WARNING: Be careful playing it if your opponent has coin.
  2. Mirror entity: Same concept. Use it before a handlock plays a giant, before a rag, before turn 6 (sylvannas, cairne, fire elemental, savannah highmane), etc. It is also very strong to build tempo/aggro.
  • "Last season you didn't use mirror entity" -> It was extremely weak to flare and unleash combo (you copy the buzzard, then you get unleashed for 1+)

The mindgames

Mage is the class that has more secrets ( 7 ). That is huge, even if you don't use them in your deck.

Why? Your opponent has to play around most of them and that forces huge missplays. Im going to give some practical examples, but there are infinite situations.

#1 Everyone expects mirror entity -> Every time you play a counterspell it will be checked with a weak minion. This means that they waste mana and cannot do their best play. Examples:

  1. Play a secret before hunter's turn 6. They will waste their mana on a shitty beast and will not be able to play savannah highmane that turn.
  2. Do the same vs handlocks the turn before giants.
  3. This trick can also prevent a turn 8 ragnaros, turn 9 ysera etc. Having one more turn can be the difference between drawing sheep or losing.

#2 Use emotes. Take advantage of all your tools.

This one is the funniest. The trick is very simple.

When you are about to lose, play one secret and use the "Sorry" emote once. Your opponent will assume it's an iceblock and if he is low HP he will trade the board instead. That will give you an extra turn to finish with fireball/frostbolt. If you manage to win the unwinnable you will climb faster.

If you need a counterspell to prevent removal but you only have mirror entity in your hand, play it anyways and use the emote "sorry" to bait your enemy.

If you need a mirror entity but you only have a counterspell in your hand, do the same!

Many top100 legends fell for it already.

FAQ

Why zombie chow?

So far I'm quite happy with him but I will try to find a replacement, because I'm sure the deck can still be greatly improved.

My reason to include him is that it's a single card that makes the aggro match up way easier. Usually with mage your only tool to stop aggro is flamestrike, but most of the time you are already dead by turn 7. My intention here is to control the board since turn 1. If you have enough tempo/board presence the secrets become really strong. However, if you are behind on board control you will find the secrets quite useless.

Zombie chow can also help you to play on curve later in the game, and is an ok argus target. Just don't play it if you are going face/seting up for lethal

Should i play kirin tor without a secret?

If you don't have a board and you don't have any other play, yes.

If you are trying to go full face/aggro mode, yes.

If you already have a big board and your enemy can have aoe, don't play it.

Why no ethereal arcanist?

Because it's very situational, because it's extremely weak to BGH and because we already have many 4 cost drops.
