With the rotations closing in and the release of Witchwood growing closer, I've decided to theorycraft the decks that I think will be the most dominant. My first theorycraft is dragon paladin. At first, the deck doesn't look like much, but with with the release of Rebuke, Cathedral Gargoyle, Scaleworm & Nightmare Amalgam, alongside the existence of Sunkeeper Tarim, Cobalt Scalebane & Call to Arms, the decks potential sky rockets to a potential top tier archetype. I am still currently making changes to the deck, so any suggestions would be appreciated. If you like the deck, an upvote would really be appreciated.
Core Cards:
Righteous Protector: Due to its ability to zone the opponent out of your side of the board & protect your minions for 1 mana, this card has become a staple in most, if not all Paladin archetypes.
Cathedral Gargoyle: Oh wow, look a new card! Do any of you guys ever remember if a 2 mana 2 2 with divine shield was ever powerful enough to dominate the meta game? Wait, I think I remembered something: Shielded minibot... With the gargoyle also having taunt and Paladin gaining more tools than ever before, it seems that the long dreaded card has come back to haunt us again in its newly founded form.
Call to Arms: All of Paladins top tier decks wouldn't barely scrape the bottom of tier 2 if it wasn't for this card LMAO.
Sunkeeper Tarim: Like Call to Arms, this card has become a staple in all Paladin decks, regardless of their gameplan. Due to its ability to turn a board of harmless 1/1s & 2/2s into a nightmare of 3/3s & nerfing your opponents big bois, this card allows you to easily snowball your opponent from a position that seems weak & harmless.
Faerie Dragon: With there not being many cheap, fair stated dragons to run, this card seems like the go-to option, since it can also be pulled from Call to Arms.
Nighmare Amalgam: Ok, I can hear you all say it, yes, this card can be devoured by warlocks with a sac pact or, pretty much, any other deck running a golakka crawler & hungry crab but ,memes aside, this card is going to be insane with so many power creeps rotating out of standard. It's 3/4 body allows you to make a couple of value trades & can prove to be difficult to deal with. In addition, it also synergises with other dragon cards in the deck.
Scaleworm: 4 mana 5/4 Rush, this card is just absolutely nuts. It can clear pretty much everything your opponent puts on the board up until turn 6 & in a deck with so many smaller threats & small taunts, you can stick it on the board and smack your opponent to death.
Cobalt Scalebane: We've all seen how impactful this card has been in most aggressive archetypes. Since this deck has tons of cards that synergise with this card, your opponent is going to dread every single second this card would be on the board.
Lost in the Jungle: With most of the powerful 1 drops rotating out of standard, there aren't as many powerful 1 drops left for a deck like this to play. Hence, in order to maintain early board control and aggression, the deck needs to run high tempo early game minions.
Tech Cards:
Rebuke: Naxx Out! Loatheb 2.0: 2 mana spell Enemy spells cost (5) more next turn.
Unidentified Maul: With Rallying Blade rotating out, there aren't any cheap weapons other than this card. With its potential to summon tokens or buff your current board, this card is a great choice for aggressive Paladin archetypes.
Blessing of Kings: Since you run an additional minion that could potentially have taunt & divine shield, this card is really powerful in this deck, which allows you to turn a harmless 1/1 silver hand recruit into a 5/5 major threat.
Spikeridged Steed: With the release of Rush minions, this card seems to be really appealing to run in the deck, but, in my opinion, running it alongside Leeroy seems sub-optimal.
Vinecleaver: This card is pretty much your endgame card. Moreover, it synergises really well with Fungalmancer, Dire wolf Alpha & Knife Juggler.
Gravelsnout Knight: This card didn't see any play at all in KnC, but I feel like other 1 drops just make your Call to Arms worse, and with Rallying Blade rotating out Argent Squire isn't as appealing as it otherwise was.
Dire Wolf Alpha: There weren't that many great 2 drops, so I figured that this was the best option to go with, since it allows you to make the most optimal trades possible.
Knife Juggler: Due to the lack of alternatives, this seems like the best choice, especially with the Vinecleaver & Fungalmancer packages.
Fungalmancer: I feel like this is a must have if you run a copy of Vinecleaver. This card is nuts in Paladin because of Call to Arms & allows you to transform a board state that is already powerful to an even more powerful one.
Leeroy Jenkins: This card is a great finisher and is a really optimal choice, in my opinion.
Divine Favor: With the release of Witchwood, I feel like the meta would lean towards more aggressive & midrange-ish approaches. Hence, this card won't be as powerful as it is in the current control meta. However, I have added 1 copy of this card, since the deck lacks card draw & this is the best card draw tool paladin has got.
Spellbreaker: With Warlock archetypes only loosing Mistress of Mixtures & N'zoth, it seems likely that they will dominate the meta. Therefore, running at least one silence effect seems like a must in every aggro/midrange deck.
This, of course, is not the finalised version of the deck, since only half of the cards have been revealed & this is just a Theorycraft. An upvote would be appreciated if you like the deck. If your looking for decks to climb the current ladder with, you can check out my other decks. I will write a full deck guide with upon the release of the expansion.
Any feedback on my current theorycrafts would greatly be appreciated :) ! An upvote will be greatly appreciated too ;)

Like the idea of the deck. I switched a couple cards to give some more synergy. Dropped out the 2 x lost in the jungle, 1 x Prince Liam and 1 x Scalebane to put in a 2 x Ebon Dragonsmith, 1 x Truesilver Champion and 1 x Val'anyr. Reducing Val'anyr cost is very likely and makes it very good. Also getting it dropped on a Scaleworm or a Faerie Dragon can cause your opponents some real issue. There's a couple other good minions it can drop on as well and it gives some real pressure as long as it keeps cycling. Reducing any of the other weapons is just icing because they can be dropped out when they least expect them.
Only two issues i see is a lack of any real healing and no silence.
but why risk to Call to Arm your Cathedral Gargoyles ?
Because what are they going to do for you if you don't draw them or draw them late? They are dead weight and Call to Arms solves that problem and helps the deck work better.
I would really appreciate any feedbacks & comments. These are my best & most optimised theorycrafts for the new expansion.
I think the Gargoyle and Scaleworm are defenitly worth building around and I like what you've done with the deck. My only concerns are :
- The one-offs. I don't like it, I like when my deck is consistent in what it does. I would cut Rebuke and play 2 divine favors. I would cut Spellbreaker or put two of them (if you want to target Warlock with this silence, you need at least two, and even then you'll probably lose anyway. I'd go with 0 spellbreaker).
- I think you need at least 2 early game weapons, only one Maul seems not enough. Since Rallying Blade is rotating, I guess two Mauls ?
- I think a seventh dragon would be nice, but I'm not sure. Gargoyle will sometimes be recruited by CtA anyway and the Scaleworm is not HORRIBLE as a 4/4. And there is no other dragon I see fitting in this deck anyway.
Well, Rebuke can be an amazing card if you have a good board and prevent your opponent from playing Psychic Scream or Brawl or Twisting Nether or to prevent a combo that would otherwise clear your board.
More weapons could be good, but i wouldn't put two Mauls, but one Truesilver Champion or since this is a dragon deck, put Ebon Dragonsmith and one more Vinecleaver or even Silver Sword.
I would definitely cut Leeroy for something more relevant to this type of deck, like Level Up! or Drygulch Jailor.
The problem is that this deck is trying to be a dragon and a dude deck. I don't think Dragon Paladin has good support yet, maybe with the next expansion, and there are cards missing from this deck that would make it a good dude deck.
Yeah I can see that, I also can see how rebuke can be a dead card against aggro and useless against Lord Godfrey / Duskbreaker. We'll see if it's good enough to make the cut but I don't believe too much.
The only dude pally card I'm play is Lost in the Jungle, & that is because there are no other alternatives in the current pool of 1 drops for this deck. I'm considering trying out Prince Liam instead of the leeroy & running argent squires tho.
I'm not sure if the dragon idea is working, because you could lack dragons. I know Nightmare Amalgam is a dragon and Cathedral Gargoyle is super strong in this deck, but I'm not sure if this is better than the current dude/murloc palas.. I like the idea though :)
Ebon Dragonsmith looks like it would work well in this deck, expecially if you ran more weapons. A turn 5 Vinecleaver could be a huge swing, along with another activator for your synergies.
Yeah, I agree. 6 Dragons isn't really enough in a deck with a low hand size. Adding more would help the deck greatly!
Personally I'd cut both fungals, Leeroy and 1 Scaleworm for 2x Ebon Dragonsmith +1 Unidentified Maul +1 Truesilver Champion.
This also lowers the total mana cost greatly, from 4+3x5=19 --> 3+(4*3)-(2*2)=11 --> 7 mana cheaper for what is arguably better for synergy and boardcontrol. As well as about equal potential face damage! (Though with a slight loss on burst.)
Dragon Paladin is hard, I feel like the archtype is trying to be aggressive and controlling at the same time which has only really worked in Cubelock variants. It seems to me just by the look of it that it might not leave enough of an impact. The Scaleworm and the Gargoyle are the main cards that make this deck a dragon deck and there's only 6 dragons that trigger these effects so it seems like there isn't enough support; consequentially the rest of the deck (the more zoo side of things) suffers because of the lack of synergy, not to mention that Call to Arms pulls some of the dragon synergy away so it's really hard to identify and solutions to the deck. I don't believe the issue is in the way you have constructed it per say, but rather the archtype as a whole doesn't have the support and it would be better to get rid of the dragon elements and just try and synergise with the rest of the deck.
I am currently working several theorycrafted archetypes. Here are the decklists if you guys are interested. Any feedback would greatly be appreciated :)
Why not just run Lost in the Jungle in place of Gravelsnout Knight? Because it's a spell, it can't get pulled by Call to Arms, so you pull your other better 1 and 2 drops, and it's better on 1 than gravelsnout. It also seems like the dragon synergies are gonna be really inconsistent; old school Dragon Warrior used to run 8 dragons so that it could consistently activate its dragon synergy cards, but this deck only runs 6, and your Faerie Dragons are gonna get pulled by CTA so you won't have them in hand as often.
Thanks for the comment mate. I was gonna initially add Lost in the Jungle because of the synergy it has with other jugglers and alphas, but I thought it was in the Old Gods set for some reason. I'll make sure to swap it with Gravelsnout. By the way, the deck runs 8 dragons, since amalgam is considered as 1.
Good changes, but you still have 6 dragons, even If you count on Amalgam
After getting Arthas yesterday finally and my love for dragons I will for sure give this deck a try when the expansion is released. April 12th cannot come fast enough!
I am working on a similar deck. What do you think about including Ebon Dragonsmith (for another dragon, obviously, and the chance to reduce the cost a weapon - Val'anyr - in particular)?
Compared to your deck I thought about removing Vinecleaver, Leeroy and 2 x Fungalmancer and instead using The Glass Knight and 2 x TrueSilver, and 1 x Val'anyr. Combined with Ebon Dragonsmith, my theory is this could allow Truesilver out for 2 mana and the Glass Knight might be able to survive and regenerate his own shield, etc.
Plus, if Val'anyr landed on the Scaleworm, that's a huge rush minion.
Any thoughts? Be frank; I've only made Legend 2x before. I appreciate you posting this decklist too.
The why I didn't include Val'anyr was that my read into the Witchwood meta is that it would be flooded with aggro & midrange, alongside control & cubelock. Against aggro, I don't think Val'anyr will do that great. Ebon Dragonsmith did come across my mind but, if you ask me, the worst cards in Hearthstone are weapons when you have a weapon equipped. But if I'm wrong, which is quite likely, and the meta would be more control-ish, then val'anyr would be great instead of Vinecleaver. I would also add a Divine Favor, which I don't currently run because its terrible vs aggro.
Thanks for the response. The more I think about this the more I am inclined to agree with you. Vinecleaver works so well with Knife Juggler and Tarim.
Looking over your deck list you have only 6 dragons. Is that enough to trigger the synergies? I have never tried a dragon deck before. That's another reason I wondered about Ebon Dragonsmith; just to have two more dragons in there. Even if they just cheapen Vinecleaver that could still be good.
Anyway, we'll see what other cards come out. Please keep this updated, I am eager to see what you come up with after all the cards are revealed.
