Heya fellas! Rank 3-5 player here with control warrior (last 3 seasons), here is my take on the next expansion's taunt warrior! Always been a fan of this archetype and I am hoping that with Baku and the fact that the card power of some decks are going abit down again it might see some play!
Strategy:
I hypothesize that one of the challenges of Baku the Mooneater decks will be to fill out the curves, hence I put Stonehill Defender (plus Elise the Trailblazer) aswell as Harrison Jones seeing as many decks use weapons nowadays (and some much needed draw). Alternatives for card draw (except Shield Block) are Acolyte of Pain but seeing there is no easy way to activate double draw in this deck (except possibly Whirlwind I thought it might be too weak. The current standard rotation has quite alot of good weapons, and this is why Molten Blade is included, Fiery War Axe is a viable alternative too!
The idea is to quickly finish your quest, and either use Blackwald Pixie as a defensive mechanism (against aggro) for 8 armor on turn 7 which saves enough mana to still be able to clear the board with Reckless Flurry or a few Shield Slams, or as a double hero power for a total of 16 dmg after quest completion. I was also thinking about using Clockwork Automaton for double hero power damage, but I fear it will be too situational and gimmicky, not to mention a dead card until you finish your quest. Also, Blackwald Pixie has much more agressive stats so you can sometimes slam it down for the board presence.
If you manage to wipe the board completely after your quest is finished, it should look quite good from here! Saving your Brawl and Reckless Flurry for big board removals, which also makes sure your hero power hits the opponents face is key here! One of the best removal + damage combos (if you have saved up some armor) is Reckless Flurry into hero power + Blackwald Pixie + hero power. Board clear and 16 face damage!
I also did not add any other 9 drops on purpose as you always want to play hero power after quest is complete (hence the high amount of 3+5 drops). This is also the reason why I did not include Master Oakheart even though he could give you a big tempo swing.
Thoughts? (PS: This is my first decklist on Hearthpwn, be nice! :))
good question. The way I see it, the voidlords must take the rag hero power, and save the aoe for the voidwalkers. But hey, well see how it works. I dont think warlock is the best matchup though. I don't think it's impossible to win fatigue though.
I am also thinking about Whirlwind and maybe even King Mosh
hey! I was thinking about it, but I decided not to because of all the card draw mechanisms the different classes have atm, zoomage might be a possibility, cube locks and druids all have excellent draw, so even against an aggro deck I think it will almost end up as a direhorn. And direhorn's shuffle ability is really nice as an anti fatigue aswell! :)
Yeah. I agree with you, I wonder how well the improved hero power will work as an alternative to the card draw. E.g play 3drops plus armor up on turn 5, have to wait and see! :) I think that it will be easy to fall behind on board so youll have to heavily rely on the big removals! I personally think Applebaum will be such a solid card to give you that stall you need to reset the state of the game. But lets find out in a few days! :D
I also think some sort of Countess shenanigans could help aswell (RIP Curator). Like add Darius and maybe another rush minion, deck already runs alot of rattles so could be considered!
haha I wrote it just abit further up that I was thinking about whirlwind king mosh, but yeah I do think brawl and reckless x2 should be enough, and also the whole point of a full aoe clear is that the hero power his the face, and mosh + whirl is 10 mana, but I think its one of those tech choices you could do if you feel like you need more removal.
I just worry that 9drops will make us alot weaker, not being able to either get 4 armor or 8 damage. And control warlocks will lose their NZoth so it gets abit weaker. But yeah Its gonna be interesting to see if there is enough removal in that matchup.
I've been toying around with ideas of Baku warrior as well. One addition I might consider making is adding Baron Geddon, as having an extra board clear is always nice and he's historically been pretty decent in warrior. I have the feeling that warrior will be getting at least one more card to help promote this archetype, so I'm pretty hyped to see how Baku warrior runs.
Yeah good idea! I am also hoping there should be another card coming :D I was thinking about Geddon, also remember using him in my first original control/big warrior like waaay back! My only concern is his 5 hp and that 2 brawls + 2 flurrys should be enough. But Geddon is absolutely a good idea as a replacement for the axe + sleep with the fishes combo!
Thanks man! :D Yeah haha got golden too, just wanna play the control/taunt archetype like back in the days! Hoping this will work! If u have any feedback or suggestions I'd love to hear them!
