NiHao and welcome to "Let's have some fun by stealing all you have"
This priest deck has seen some popularity over on the chinese servers due to its alternative playstyle that also includes a lot of fun. It's called the 9/4 priest, because it includes 9 cards that steal the opponent's minion as well as 4 spells that steal the opponent's cards. You like that, little thief!
About Me
Hello party people! I am Mart23 and a dedicated shaman player... or so I thought. You can find my popular Shaman deck here: Shaman Showtime. If you want to practice shaman and priest matchups feel free to add me ingame on the European servers. My battleTag is Mart#1602.
Deck Changes
Over the last couple of days I have tried out a slight adaption to deck to deal with the early aggression just a bit better. The changes made were [date: 9/29]:
- +2 Wild Pyromancer (swapping out 2x Shades)
- +1 Holy Nova (dropping a single Shadow Word: Pain)
A lot of interesting suggestions have been made in the comment section below. Some of them supported the theme of the deck, some focussed more on the possible stronger decklist. I'd like to thank you for your ideas. Reason why I do not change the decklist as drastically as some of you have implied is because the deck already does well in the current meta. If you change too much of it you should probably just stick to either the Control Priest deck (Amaz, Kibler, ...) or Zetalot Deck.
Deck Breakdown
Let's have a look why this deck is so different from the usual priest we see on the ladder at the moment.
The Glorious 9:
2x Mind Control Tech : That little guy prevents aggro decks from rushing us down while establishing a board.
2x Shadow Madness : A midgame card to trade opponent's minions efficiently. Why would your minions do the dirty work, eh?
2x Cabal Shadow Priest : Good body and sometimes huge value. It's all about weakening their board.
1x Sylvanas Windrunner : Arguably the best midgame control card in this game. Great synergy with Shadow Word: Death for 9 Mana, if needed. Amaz would be proud.
2x Mind Control : The way to deal with lategame powercards such as Tirion.
The Fancy 4:
2x Mind Vision : Theoretically a weaker version of Thoughtsteal, but then again i only costs 1 Mana.
2x Thoughtsteal : This card can really turn the tides in some matchups like Shaman.
In order to stay alive against aggro and midrange decks, the following cards complement the decklist:
2x Sen'jin Shieldmasta : 5 health for 4 mana is a safe drop most of the times.
2x Sludge Belcher : Super sticky minion that often leads to awkward enemy trading.
2x Holy Fire : With so many 5 health minions out there at the moment just a great way to deal with it and heal at the same time.
Mulligan
Generally said, the first thing to consider when you mulligan is whether the opponent plays some aggro deck or not. In most cases you are better off when you mulligan for early removal/aoe. If you face a warlock for example, try to get a Wild Pyromancer and also keep a 1 mana Spell. If you have the coin, keep it fpr the pyro! In addition, having one Shadow Word: Pain can come in handy. However, only use it for the Knife Juggler or Dire Wolf Alpha. It's usually very strong to play a Mind Control Tech (if he has 4 minions obviously) and follow up with a Shadow Madness the next turn. Usually that's when you start to stabilize.
Against Control decks, the basic Northshire Cleric + Shield combo is just as strong as in any other priest deck. However, with no Blademaster or Dark cultist in this deck, you will play much slower (one could say more reactively) overall. Against Warrior I like to keep 1 Mind Control Tech and hope for a steal on the Armor Smith or Acolyte of Pain. Since the games are slower, Thoughsteal is a reasonable play on turn 3.
This deck sucks. It was fun at first but in addition to being highly variable, everyone better than Rank 20 already knows the deck and knows how to counter it by not playing more than 3 minions.
I understand the chinese now and their wrath...
Fuck this deck. Hate facing it. So douchey on so many levels. Was fun for a day or two. Now it's every second game, a chinese fortune-cookie thief priest! *RAAAAAAGE*
This deck is no longer that strong in China since everyone know how this deck operates. But it still works in EU. I play both on EU and CN servers.
The same is true for the US meta. This deck was so strong and became so popular so quickly that it directly influenced the meta. I loved this deck when it first came out and enjoyed a couple weeks of absolute fun and domination. It was a great ladder climber.
But in the current meta...it is not competitive at all. It's fun, it has synergy, it's creative...but it is severely lacking now and now it has become one of the worst decks to use as Priest. Almost every class has adapted and now this deck gets destroyed so easily. Serious changes need to be made in order for it to become competitive again. As it is now...it has become reduced to just another gimmick deck unfortunately.
Some have done that, but many others are finding efficient ways of running more 4 attack minions or using low cost minions but an increased amount of buffs to try to end the match earlier.
See the next post (from Yenapig) as it gives some good examples.
Yes, for control Priest and Druid, never play more than 3 minions except you have lethal next turn. 94 deck has no effective board clear if you use caution on shadow madness and MC tech. It is still hard for control warrior to win 94 since warrior cannot give priest enough pressure in the early game and 94 Priest deck is definitely designed as a control deck killer.
This deck sucks in the early season due to lots of aggro decks at that time.
I just wanted to say i really love this deck. It's so fun to play and nothing can't really beat the feeling of knowing that your opponent rage quits when you steal his card for the millionth time :D
The author said that this deck is designed for it: destroying opponents' mood (in a joking tone). It is kind of evil but really fun.
Sorry for my bad English. O(∩_∩)O
I built a budget version with less of the gimmicky cards, but a little less power, any thoughts are welcome folks. Mart23, thanks for this amazing gift, most top end decks don't adjust to a budget as well as this does.
I cant quite figure out how Wild Pyromancer fits here. I can see how he's handy for early game, but I only seem to draw him when he's not useful (typically after I have 1-2 stolen minions, or when he would do more harm than good). For the moment, Ive already decided to swap out 1 of them for a Kel'Thuzad (which makes late-game trades a lot less risky). The other one I might replace with a Faceless Manipulator or Mindgames.
Although, yesterday I switched it out for a Gelbin Mekkatorque...just for sh*ts and giggles. It was quite entertaining.
I would not trade the pyros for anything. They have gotten me out of SO many sticky situations. Yes, they excel early game, but an extra point of global damage on your spells can make quite a bit of difference, even lategame. This minion also has the benefit of being enormously threatening to your opponent, baiting out all sorts of cards to clear it.
I would say if you're bent on ditching a Pyro, replace it with a swamp ooze. This deck has no cards to counter Doomhammer, Gorehowl, etc. You'll likely deck yourself with Harrison, so I don't use him
This deck needs no card to counter Gorehowl and Doomhammer for it is already free win against warrior and shaman.
This deck is so evil and fun! I had been trying to decide which legendary card to craft with some of the dust I had been saving up. Seeing this deck convinced me to go with Sylvanas Windrunner.
I've only played this deck a few times (just built it last night) but it can be insanely fun. I'm used to playing aggro decks so there was one game against a Mage where I was down 30 to 9 by midgame and I almost conceded. Glad I didn't. All of a sudden I started pulling all of the evil card stealing cards, took all of the other player's good stuff and easily won. So crazy.
Personally, I would probably replace it with something that either changes a minion like Tinkmaster Overspark, destroys a minion like The Black Knight, or another Big Game Hunter. The best option, however, could be adding an Abusive Sergeant to help kill that damn Ysera with Shadow Word: Death! But ... I'm not that great at making decks, so who knows.
The Black Knight
Basically every deck now use sludge belcher. As such the black knight will almost always gives you value. Otherwise
Spellbreaker could be a possibility, since there is no silence in this deck.
Stampeding kodo is a great sub in this deck!
Mind-games? I used mindgames until I had the dust for the second cabal shadow priest and it worked, I managed to get a Ragnaros on turn 4 once, lol.
Really fun, and love everything about this deck. Went from rank 14 and ended at 4 this season feeling like a proud douche with a trail of frustrated Sea Giants, Golden Control Warriors, and Bot's (who honestly couldn't care less) behind me! One of my last matches of the night was against a mirror who heinously played Malygos. By the end I had four SWDs, two SWPs and a BGH and NO chance of hitting the damn thing!
By the time I lost, I've already used one on Sylvanas and haven't drawn into the second in my deck.
