Come in and Warm your Frozen Boots by the Fire!
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Gunnolf, and I am originally from the Land Down Under a.k.a. Australia. I am an avid gamer that has acquired a real passion for card games, which originated from my humble beginnings as a Yu-Gi-Oh collector and eventually grew from my dabbling in Cardfight Vanguard and Buddyfight, until we reached the game we know as Hearthstone.
I've played Hearthstone since the days of classic, with multiple accounts on both EU and NA servers. Despite having reached the Rank of Legend and my own personal mentality of equating 'having fun' with 'winning', I am not really a fan of meta power-grinding & net-decking, not that there is anything wrong with that. Therefore, I enjoy thinking about new, cool and fun deck ideas that push boundaries while also allowing you to win and those are what I want to share with you guys every-time I post a decklist.
I have presently become a contributing writer to WILDHS and will be posting articles there on a semi-regular basis, regarding deck-archetypes the status of the meta as well as how to get the most fun out of this game even if you aren't a big spender. If any of this sounds interesting, then I highly recommend that you check out of the website, as the writers and the owner himself are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet with great in-game knowledge (link to be website can be found HERE). You can also follow me on Twitter for latest updates.
If you genuinely like my content and would like to see me produce more of it, then please consider supporting me on Patreon. This is by no means necessary but it will definitely help me out in the long run. Thanks for Reading ^^
Deck Introduction
Hey guys and welcome back for another one of my wild decks. This will be my first official submission for hunter and as such I am really excited about it. It took me a while to crack the class and find a deck that was good and that I enjoyed playing. After extensive experimentation and ping-ponging between control and aggressive hunter decks I finally nestled into a midrange style list. I was apprehensive at first but the deck just exploded on ladder. So far I have about an 80+ % winrate with the deck at ranks 8-7 (although the sample size is quite small 5-1) and that is with my missing some key cards that even the playing field against control match-ups (which I will cover later on in 'card substitutions'). This will most likely be my last deck submission until March as I am experiencing some health problems but with some luck I'll be back next month with more content. Thanks you for reading and without any more ado, let's get into the deck details.
Card Choices & Deck-Building Explained
In this section, I will explain some of the card choices I opted for and the reasoning as to why they were included over potential counter-parts.
a) Barnes: This is a pretty key minion to the deck as the vast majority of minions included in the list allow for potentially large swings. Essentially, out of the 14 minions we run (excluding Barnes for obvious reasons) 10 are great results with King Krush, Spellbreaker and Loatheb being just vanilla 1/1 minions.
b) Spellbreaker: A pretty mandatory card in a Control warlock meta. It allows you to get through taunts and even potentially silence a good 1/1 Barnes minion for an enormous tempo swing if it is a large minion (e.g. King Krush).
c) Tracking: Great card. When you start transitioning into the the mid to lategame, it's a great topdeck and a way for you to discover something potentially useful to the then present gameplan.
d) Loatheb: A definite midrange inclusion. Protects your board and allows you to close out a game without fear of a board wipe.
(At the present time, only a few cards have been listed but I will include more if questions pop-up within the comments section regarding substitutions and why other cards were included.)
Short Mulligan Guide
No matter how tempted you may be to keep Tracking, do NOT do it. It's a good lategame card and you definitely do not want it early.
These are the cards you should keep in your opening hand or search for during the mulligan phase: a) Secretkeeper, b) Mad Scientist and c) Barnes.
You can potentially keep Wandering Monster if you have Cloaked Huntress in hand. You might also want to consider keeping it if you are up against aggro. Most of the time you want to throw your secrets back into your deck due to Mad Scientist but occasionally it might be correct to keep one or two depending on your hand (i.e. secret keeper and/or Cloaked Huntress).
Also remember your 4 big beasts are like Patches the Pirate, you do not want to see them in your hand before Kathrena Winterwisp hits the board.
Alternate Card Inclusions (F2Pish)
Do keep in mind that not having these cards does not impact the speed or playstyle of the deck. It merely means that you can potentially run out of gas quicker.
I will now indicate what substitutions you can potentially include, if you do not own King Krush or Deathstalker Rexxar. If you have any queries regarding other card slots please let me know and I'll try to help you find replacements.
a) Deathstalker Rexxar: Is a very hard card to replace due to the value he can generate. Essentially, he can warp your midrange or aggressive hunter deck into a control one. As a replacement, I chose Professor Putricide. He worked fairly well in the deck and the additional secret value was pretty significant at times. Another card that came to mind was Call of the Wild. It is not quite on the same power level but it can close out games.
b) King Krush: This card is the easiest to replace in my honest opinion. First off you have Charged Devilsaur as an obvious replacement. Same essential function when pulled from your deck. Other than that Giant Sand Worm proved to be a great ally during playtesting. Its ability to get through multiple non-poison taunts is unmatched and a worthy inclusion. If worse comes to worst you can always include a second Violet Wurm.
The only real limit is your imagination. Just because these cards worked for me and proved themselves in games I played, does not that their inclusion is absolute.
With the Witchwood expansion coming to light, I have experimented further and added new cards that can potentially make this deck even stronger for your ladder climb. The first card I would recommend would be Witchwood Grizzly. This card has an insane stat-line and will make your deck much more defensive especially if you get the full 12 health when it's called off of the Kathrena Winterwisp battlecry and/or deathrattle. Additionally, Houndmaster Shaw is an astoundingly good card which can often just win you the game on the spot if he sticks. I usually replace Barnes with him in the deck, so you have yet another option in this expansion with which to replace everyone's most hated card. Finally, an older card that works really well is Swamp King Dred. Due to the odd manacost of these minions i.e. 5 & 7, the mana curve is made a lot smoother which can potentially lead to fewer dead turns.
Author's Notes
This is an extremely fun and somewhat competitive deck which I highly recommend you try out. You'd be surprised by how well it performs. It is capable of explosive starts with Secretkeeper and Cloaked Huntress and can really push into the lategame with the deathknight Deathstalker Rexxar. Let me know how it goes!
I enjoy deck-building a multitude of interesting decks that are both entertaining and Legend viable (with some odd Free-to-Play lists mixed in). So if you like this deck (or anyone of my other ones) consider leaving a thumbs up, as it really helps in the long run! :)
Thank you guys for all your support and if you have any suggestions, let me know.
Sylvanas for Loatheb? Because I don't have Loatheb :D , Thank You
Well Loatheb is really good but if you don't have him then you can rock Sylvanas Windrunner in his place if you want to.
Even though I am on the fence about it, Lesser Emerald Spellstone could also be a good inclusion as a 1 of, to make things cheaper. :)
Houndmaster Shaw is really good too. Basically better than Barnes at this point but if you don't have Loatheb you could include both! ^^
I have Barnes & Sylvanas which one do you prefer & suggest? :D
Go for the waifu Sylvanas! :D
Hey Gunnolf, have you considered using Dire Frenzy in this deck at all? In theory it could be useful for providing something else for Kathrena in case you draw all your beasts first and it could be used on a Huffer from Animal Companion for some potential burst damage later on in the game.
The one glaring issue I see with it is you can't play it on an 8 mana beast or with Kathrena in the same turn, so it may be a slow combo.
From a theoretical standpoint I know the card has merit but the option to test it out has never been there for me despite knowing that a lot of people love the card. I'll give it a try instead of Barnes even though he's technically already been unofficially replaced by Houndmaster Shaw. I'll let you know how it goes :)
I was only missing a single Secret Keeper for this deck so I made one, and have been trying out the deck for a couple hours. The amount of times I draw King Krush on turns 1 or 2 is staggering, and Barnes picks Spellbreaker like every time. I'm able to win in spite of these things, but the Kathrena dream plays are not happening. My luck has been horrendous lol :/
Still, wins are wins I guess. The deck works despite itself ^_^
Yeah Barnes is decent in the deck but you always have that % chance to really low roll. Drawing your 4 Huge Patches is annoying as well but that's what happens when you crate a Recruit card like Kathrena Winterwisp which is essentially more or less balanced! :p
I would honestly recommend crafting Loatheb just cause of how good a card he is. But if you don't have him, Professor Putricide could work :)
Thank you very much for this deck. I climbed with this to rank 4 from rank 15 with very good winrate only for 4 days. Spellbreakers and Freezing Traps help very well against Cubelocks, which are very much on high ranks. THANK YOU, AGAIN!
You are very very welcome. Thank you so much for reading and playing with my deck. ^^
Stay tuned as more are yet to come.
Such a pleasure to see a different list than the Barnes Y'Shaarj. Thank you for this list.
Just a question, how does it go versus the giants + Naga sea witch combo decks?
Yeah I am not really a fan of the Barnes Y'Shaarj combo. It is a little bit sickening. Glad you like it.
Winning is quite draw dependent unfortunately, if you're able to get off to an explosive start with a Secretkeeper then you are extremely favored to win. If not and you lag behind it'll be an uphill struggle.
I was not really impressed with the way it worked out with limited secrets. But you could sub out the animal companion for the spellstone.
No problemo! ^^
hmmmm weird my previous reply didn't go through. Anyway, Trap Slots are very flexible so you can include what you like. Barnes is just for the highroll potential. You can of course sub him out for substitutions of your personal preference.
In terms of jade druid, I wouldn't bother adding in Skulking Geist. The jade druids nowadays are so slow you should be able to easily out tempo them.
Especially when you start removing cards like Violet Wurm for other chargers. If Barnes ever gets nerfed I definitely know what I'm replacing him with! ^^
Nice deck! I used this deck to climb from R15 to R6!!!
Good Tempo for each turn. Only lose with stupid RNG deck.
Thanks for the great deck overall.
You're very welcome and thanks for playing it ^^
I'Il take this deck to Wild Open ^-^
