Introduction
Hi guys, i'm Hyeri, maining Big Spell Priest since the start of K&C. First of all thanks for all your upvotes. I never expected to hit front page and this will be my first guide as well. Please bear with me and I would like to see your thoughts and feedback on the deck in the comments below!
First of all I have to mention that this deck is a Theorycraft deck meant to be played AFTER the announced nerfs are live. Untill then I suggest playing Satellite's Big Spell Priest or variants of it. I'm not going through the base strategy of this deck. There are plenty of guides out there on how to play Big Spell Priest, so I would like to refer to these.
Incomming nerfs
So, we all know that Control lock and Cubelock are going to be massively played after the nerfs. I'm also expecting to see more Questrogue, Tempomage, Jade druid, evolve Shaman and Aggrodin. I built this deck based on these expectations. I currently struggle with beating Aggrodins in cases when i don't draw my Duskbreaker on time. Even then divine shield can totally wreck us. Note that Unidentified Maul can also provide divine shield. With Corridor Creeper gone in our deck we have new options to rebuild this deck, so let's do a breakdown of the deck.
Deck breakdown
Bonemare is going to get nerfed to 8 mana. I think it will still be a good card, as a finisher or as a life safer that provides taunt. The cards just gives us a lot of value and is extremely good in combination with our big minions (either in making them stronger or protecting them). Though, the new Bonemare will slightly wreck our mana curve since we usually spend our turn 8 on either Free From Amber or Spiteful Summoner plus a two-drop or hero power. Thus I only included in one copy for now. We will have to see how things work out.
I used to run 1 copy of Kabal Songstealer for the silence and his strong 5/5 body, but with more Warlocks on the ladder we will need more (and cheaper) silences. Thus two Spellbreaker. My experience with Warlocks is that we have a high chance of winning if we prevent them from making a Voidlord before turn 9. Possessed Lackey and Skull of the Man'ari are our enemies. In most games Possessed Lackey will be the villain. Silence him and we will be able to swing the game in our favour with Spiteful Summoner. This will slow their deck down a lot and provides us time to draw Mind Control to steal their Voidlord later on.
Spellbreaker doesn't have the strong 5/5 body, but he is a lot more versatile due to his 4 mana cost. Some cards that we want to stop, before the enemy snowballs out of hand are: Possessed Lackey Fandral Staghelm Knife Juggler and Murloc Warleader, just to name a few.
I teched in one copy of Harrison Jones purely to counter Skull of the Man'ari and Unidentified Maul, but perhaps also Kingsbane and Aluneth, since we will probably going to see these more. A budget replacement is Corrosive Sludge or even Gluttonous Ooze if you own him. Though the card draw Harrison Jones provides can be of great value. Since mentioned weapons have a durability of 3.
Onwards to Cabal Shadow Priest This card shines in mirror matches if you be able to steal their Northshire Cleric or Shadow Ascendant. It also counters Possessed Lackey from developing that annoying 9 drop. Stealing a naked 2/2 might seem odd, but removing that thing early on is our best chance of winning. Mana Tide Totem, the new Corridor Creeper and Knife Juggler are also good targets.
Perhaps two copies will be an overkill, so I lowered this one to one copy and replaced it with Skulking Geist countering Jade Idol, Evolve, Unstable Evolution and Dark Pact.
Final card on the list is Psychic Scream. Might seem odd on the first sight, but I'm thinking this card can give you another shot at games that seem to be lost in the first place. Imagine your opponent having a board filled with Voidlord and Voidwalker. Things can be turned around in our favour turn 8, when we can Spiteful Summoner or Free From Amber. We have an amazing production of cards with Netherspite Historian and Drakonid Operative, providing us extra tools to get boardcontrol after a full clear. Things should work in our favor even more if we got extra card draw from situations as described above. On a sidenote: Psychic Scream also has synergy with Medivh, the Guardian. Your 7 drop will spawn after the effect of Psychic Scream resolves. In a bigger contrast Psychic Scream also synergizes with Spiteful Summoner. 7 drops aren't all that bad with a few exceptions like Silver Vanguard and the new Corridor Creeper. Our 10 drops provided by Mind Control aren't always that good either. Pray to the RNG Gods :)
Cards that are worth to try out
Medivh, the Guardian has synergy with your big spells.
Twilight Acolyte and Curious Glimmerroot I played these, and they are good cards, but they don't carry the deck. Might work better on high ranks or legend as well. For laddering I recommend Shadow Ascendant which is a lot more reliable and consistent.
Kabal Songstealer instead of Spellbreaker.
It's quite good but i can't win vs aluneth mage. Even if they don't drop weapon or you can destroy it with harrison early on it's hard to win. Any ideas what to do because there is a lot of mages in current meta?
So far i am at 12-6 and 5 loses are aluneth mages. (rank 7)
Swap in an Eater of Secrets.
-1 shadow ascendant +1 Eater of secrets nowadays bunch of mage scrubs around :)
the problem w this is that if you are low health, and you got medivh in your hand, you are pretty much fked. Otherwise Medivh is the better choice.
You really need one Bonemare, extremely useful card. Take out Harrison or Geist if you want Medivh.
Really should run at least 1 twilight acolyte with Cabal Shadow Priest for the 9 mana take anything combo really nice to take opposing voidlords carnivorous cubes lich kings etc I also really dislike Psychic Scream as it makes Grand Archivist a lot weaker if you haven't drawn the 1 of denying a lot of value from it and there's always the chance of spiteful summoner summoning grand archivist for 8 and pulling psychic scream. I understand small odds with that worst case scenario however its enough for me to feel it should be excluded.
The list I came up with for this is similar but a few differences as I'm running crystalline oracle for additional 1 drop + draw 1 glimmer roots too generate more cards from their deck as being able to pick up additional removal from their deck is amazing, also running a Bone Drake too have a Dragon that gives you a Dragon too keep synergies available.
Very solid list either way.
Hello my boys!
I have made a showcase of this deck trying to explain the basics of the deck and then showing some action in the games. I am trying to analyze everything I do because I think it can help newer players and maybe teach some veterans as well :). I am open to constructive critism to my videos and I will be happy to hear opinions either of my plays or the video structure so dont hesitate to post some feedback! I hope you can enjoy the video :)
Have a nice day everyone!
Since your win condition with this deck is to overwhelm your opponent with your board the inclusion of Psychic Scream seems pretty counterproductive.
This^ and the anti synergy with grand archivist is atrocious
After trying the deck I noticed a very big flaw: Spiteful Summoner drawing Psychic Scream from the deck. Spiteful Summoner is one of this deck's win conditions, and with at least 20% (probably more by the time turn 6+ comes around) of creating a 7 drop which may be worse than you think.
Bad 7 drops include:
Ancient of Lore, Ancient of War, Giant Anaconda, Inkmaster Solia, Grimestreet Protector, Lynessa Sunsorrow, Archbishop Benedictus, Temporus, Jade Chieftan, Stone Sentinel, Abyssal Enforcer, Ancient Shieldbearer, Malkorok, Don Han'Cho, Corridor Creeper, Grotesque Dragonhawk, Ravenholdt Assassin, Silver Vanguard, and Volcanosaur.
I realize that not all of these aren't *that* bad when you summon a 4/4 along with them for 6 mana, but compared to the original counterpart that reliably summons 8 or 10 drops (which are much better on average) it just isn't worth it to run Psychic Scream with Spiteful Summoner.
I've been playing a version with 2 Psychic Screams and zero Free From Amber with great success for the past 6 weeks. I find having an extra get out of jail card to be more valuable most of the time. You lose better minions with the Spiteful drop but not by much. The biggest loss was Lich King and the occasional combo with summoning an archivist. Since this deck and my version don't play archivist, it's not a big loss. Scream destroys certain decks and is rarely played so the surprise play is devastating. Losing CC is tough but I will add ooze and probably shadow priest to expand my options.
Is psychic scream necesary? replacementes?
Medivh has worked wonders for me, scream is garbage from my runs.
Shadowreaper Anduin what do u think in ad him he can kill really big threats and his hability is really nice
how can i replace Netherspite Historian ?
If you don't have Netherspite Historian, but you really want to play dragon/big spell priest, then I suggest playing it in Wild.
Wild has Twilight Whelp, Wyrmrest Agent and Blackwing Corruptor.
You can't replace her in any priest with dragon shell, she gives value, smooth the curve and put a dragon in your hand to activate other dragons, its way too good.
Sorry its a irreplaceable card.
But if you REALLY wants to play big spell priest, then get rid of the dragon shell and go Keleseth Version, it will be awful after patches and corridor creeper nerf, good luck in that case.
Please fix: "A budget replacement is Corrosive Sludge or even Gluttonous Ooze if you don't own him (Harrison Jones)".
I would just run Acidic Swamp Ooze
good info and deck+1 from me :D
