Squib's Rin Godlock

Updated for the Year of the Raven
RIP N'Zoth, the Corruptor

The idea behind Control Warlock is relatively simple: Control the board throughout the entire game via your many options of removal. Here, our win condition consists of cheating Voidlords on turn 5-6 with the Possessed LackeyDark Pact combo, exhausting your opponent of resources, then closing things out with Bloodreaver Gul'dan.

The real MVP in this deck is Rin, the First Disciple. She puts your opponent on a timer as soon as her deathrattle is triggered, allowing you to watch your opponent scramble for card draw and overextend into your AoE.

The Witchwood expansion has given me some interesting things to look into. I've already added Lord Godfrey, who I'm dubbing "Double-Defile on a Stick." I'm also experimenting with Curse of Weakness, as well as the possible addition of Mossy Horror for a combo clear.

General Guide

Fight for board control the entire game. Use your removal while also applying pressure with seals from Rin, the First Disciple

Tip: Most people tech some sort of silence. Consider this before slamming down your Possessed Lackey, Rin, the First Disciple, or Voidlords without a Dark Pact. Try to bait out those silences to be used when you want them to.

Knowing when to use what removal is what separates the strong from the weak. Don't just throw Hellfire out there when you could trade and set up a Defile instead. These decisions vary highly on situation and matchup, but will become second nature with experience.

If you survive long enough to play Bloodreaver Gul'dan, you should be fine. It's a huge hassle and loss of tempo for your opponent to have to remove pretty much every minion in your deck 2-3 times. Keep in mind, you win pretty much any fatigue matchup with Siphon Life. DO NOT HOLD OUT FOR THE PERFECT GUL'DAN. Greed will often get you killed.

Tip for the Mirror: He who blinks first usually loses. Never Gul'Dan unless your opponent has played both Nethers. Inversely, hold onto a Twisting Nether for your opponent's Gul'Dan. This is the standoff. Once you run out of removal and your opponent hasn't, the game is pretty much over.

Mulligan

Mulligans are typically matchup dependent. You want early removal, but you can be a bit greedier against slower decks. You typically want to mull for: Defile, Kobold Librarian, Doomsayer, Lesser Amethyst Spellstone, or Hellfire
*Note: If you draw a Lesser Amethyst Spellstone from Kobold Librarian's battlecry, it will already be upgraded to an Amethyst Spellstone. Consider this before tapping with a Kobold in hand.

Substitutions & Omissions

As far as the bottom half of the deck goes, you want to keep it as is. Much of the early game however, is based on preference. You can sub in Bloodmage Thalnos, Tainted Zealots, Gnomeferatus, Doomsayers, Tar Creepers, Skulking Geists, or weapon removal like Acidic Swamp Oozes as you see fit.

  • Another Spellbreaker isn't a bad sub for Siphon Soul or one Mortal Coil.
  • Siphon Soul is a flex card here. You can easily sub it out if that's your preference. I just feel safe with at least one guaranteed single-target removal.
  • Voodoo Dolls work incredibly well here, especially when used with Mortal Coil. I just wasn't lucky enough to open any.
