Squib's Rin Godlock
Updated for the Year of the Raven
RIP N'Zoth, the Corruptor
The idea behind Control Warlock is relatively simple: Control the board throughout the entire game via your many options of removal. Here, our win condition consists of cheating Voidlords on turn 5-6 with the Possessed Lackey + Dark Pact combo, exhausting your opponent of resources, then closing things out with Bloodreaver Gul'dan.
The real MVP in this deck is Rin, the First Disciple. She puts your opponent on a timer as soon as her deathrattle is triggered, allowing you to watch your opponent scramble for card draw and overextend into your AoE.
The Witchwood expansion has given me some interesting things to look into. I've already added Lord Godfrey, who I'm dubbing "Double-Defile on a Stick." I'm also experimenting with Curse of Weakness, as well as the possible addition of Mossy Horror for a combo clear.
General Guide
Fight for board control the entire game. Use your removal while also applying pressure with seals from Rin, the First Disciple.
Tip: Most people tech some sort of silence. Consider this before slamming down your Possessed Lackey, Rin, the First Disciple, or Voidlords without a Dark Pact. Try to bait out those silences to be used when you want them to.
Knowing when to use what removal is what separates the strong from the weak. Don't just throw Hellfire out there when you could trade and set up a Defile instead. These decisions vary highly on situation and matchup, but will become second nature with experience.
If you survive long enough to play Bloodreaver Gul'dan, you should be fine. It's a huge hassle and loss of tempo for your opponent to have to remove pretty much every minion in your deck 2-3 times. Keep in mind, you win pretty much any fatigue matchup with Siphon Life. DO NOT HOLD OUT FOR THE PERFECT GUL'DAN. Greed will often get you killed.
Tip for the Mirror: He who blinks first usually loses. Never Gul'Dan unless your opponent has played both Nethers. Inversely, hold onto a Twisting Nether for your opponent's Gul'Dan. This is the standoff. Once you run out of removal and your opponent hasn't, the game is pretty much over.
Mulligan
Mulligans are typically matchup dependent. You want early removal, but you can be a bit greedier against slower decks. You typically want to mull for: Defile, Kobold Librarian, Doomsayer, Lesser Amethyst Spellstone, or Hellfire.
*Note: If you draw a Lesser Amethyst Spellstone from Kobold Librarian's battlecry, it will already be upgraded to an Amethyst Spellstone. Consider this before tapping with a Kobold in hand.
- Rin, the First Disciple is a decent keep against non-aggro decks.
- Mortal Coil is good for bridging health for Defile clears.
- Always keep Possessed Lackey if you also have Dark Pact.
- Keep Bloodreaver Gul'dan in the mirror unless you have a read it's zoo.
Substitutions & Omissions
As far as the bottom half of the deck goes, you want to keep it as is. Much of the early game however, is based on preference. You can sub in Bloodmage Thalnos, Tainted Zealots, Gnomeferatus, Doomsayers, Tar Creepers, Skulking Geists, or weapon removal like Acidic Swamp Oozes as you see fit.
- Another Spellbreaker isn't a bad sub for Siphon Soul or one Mortal Coil.
- Siphon Soul is a flex card here. You can easily sub it out if that's your preference. I just feel safe with at least one guaranteed single-target removal.
- Voodoo Dolls work incredibly well here, especially when used with Mortal Coil. I just wasn't lucky enough to open any.
A (+/-)1 would be greatly appreciated.
Just want to know what people think. (:
I'd recommend another Gnomeferatu or Spellbreaker. If you aren't against crafting Godfrey, I totally would. He's not a staple in the deck, but he's one of the deck's most powerful tools.
what to replace N'Zoth?
Check out the Substitutions & Omissions in the guide, my dude.
Hey,nice guide...
Soo i want to ask if Master Oakheart fits in this deck i don't have the second [card] Twisting Nether[/card],or if you can suggest another card do replace.
Thanks for your initial compliment. I honestly love the idea of adding Oakheart. It just seemed a bit too memey to me for this guide. I personally haven't tried it, but I know professional players like Thijs have had success with that package.
The only thing I would further be curious about is if it's worth running Rin, the First Disciple & Master Oakheart in addition to N'Zoth, the Corruptor. I'm attaching a version of the deck which may suit your collection better. It still runs double Twisting Nether, but you could totally sub in another Mortal Coil. If you don't have Bloodmage Thalnos, sub in Tainted Zealot.
Hope this helps!
Thanks for the kind response, and yes i follow thijs ,but you are right ... Master Oakheart its too inconsistent with some comebacks thanks to him but most of the times doesn't pays off... your first deck version still great and [card]N'Zoth, the Corruptor[/card] just close so much games, the second one its more budget ,and good too.
Cheers^^
No worries, my friend. Glad I could help!
I could see Oakheart getting more use after the rotation, so I hope to be able to play some Master Rinlock in decks outside of Highlander in the future.
You're right about N'Zoth, the Corruptor, though. At times, I find him a little more consistent than Bloodreaver Gul'dan, as he's certain to resummon your Voidlords, where Gul'Dan has literally given me 6 Voidwalkers and a 2/2 Seal Demon before. xD
What is the best replacement for skulling heist? I have it but I think it’s not very could can I use skull of Kamari instead or twisting nether?
Hey freebricks! Thanks for checking out my guide.
The deck already runs double Twisting Nether. I wouldn't run Skull of the Man'ari here. It doesn't really fit in Controlock too well. Check out the substitutions and omissions section of the description. I give a few replacement options.
Let me know what you end up subbing!
What would you personally use instead?
Spellbreaker.
You think I can use Zola the gorgon instead of spell breaker? Or somehow fit her in
Meh. Not really. If anything, I would go Faceless Manipulator. You can already pull duplicates of Rin, the First Disciple and Voidlord from Stonehill Defender. But Zola isn't bad here. If you wanna sub her in and give her a dozen games or so to see how she works, by all means go for it.
*Edit:* Not sure if you're aware, but you have an increased chance to have a selection of a taunt minion from your class when playing Stonehill Defender.
Definitely possible. I ran this list without N'Zoth for several weeks and I think it's just as fun. N'Zoth was just my preferential addition to make sure I don't lose just because I didn't draw Gul'Dan.
I like the Twisting Nether into Arcane Tyrant combo. Hadn't considered that, really. If it were yesterday, I'd suggest it may be a bit too slow against aggro. But with the patch coming out today, I predict a lot less aggro on ladder. So, I could definitely see it working. At the end of it, a 5 mana 4/4 isn't the worst thing for this deck.
Best of luck and definitely let me know how it works out if you try out the tyrants!
Hell yeah, man! Glad I could help. Really happy it worked for you! Zealot + Defile is an insane combo. That's one of the cards I sub in and out depending on what I keep running into. I'd recommend Zealot over Bloodmage Thalnos even, just because of Defile.
Thanks for the support, as well. Much appreciated.
You're welcome! Thanks for checking it out!
If you don't have N'Zoth, I recommend also subbing out the Plated Beetles for anything listed in the Substitutions part of the guide. By the look of the current post-nerf meta, I would sub Tainted Zealots or Tar Creepers.
Let me know how everything works for you. (:
Great deck and thanks 4 the explanation!
