HCT Americas Drama & Results, Card Nerfs, Esports Viewership - Value Town #138 w/ Noxious
This week on Value Town, ChanManV, Alliestrasza, J4CKIECHAN, and special guest Noxious discuss their weeks in Hearthstone, the HCT America Drama and Results, viewership for competitive Hearthstone, and more!
Watch Episode 138 below, and be sure to hit up ChanManV on YouTube to find previous episodes of Value Town. You can also follow the show on Twitter @ValueTownGG and find them on Patreon.
The viewership count on the bottom left region is way higher in this video.
Week after week you talk about the low viewership of Hearthstone tournaments. As a filthy casual, I'll give you my take.
I care enough to watch the games. It's fun. But the effort required to keep up with different event's, schedules, time zones, as well as finding vods of previous games is way too high. Usually I only learn about an event midway of it happening, or I forget to tune in to the live stream after a few days. In both cases I stop caring, and go do something else instead.
Maybe I am not the target audience, being casually interested, but if you want my view, a portal where all the different upcoming as well as links to vods of previous events would help immensely.
The events themselves being very "samey" might seem like a problem if you watch a lot of them, but that is definitely not the problem for someone who don't watch a lot.
Bottom line: You do not need to change the formula to bring in new viewers. You only need to be seen.
Great post. I'd love to watch more competitive Hearthstone but trying to find out when games are playing and where I can watch VODS of recent tournaments is very difficult.
I watch pretty much all these events after the fact on youtube and I really enjoy them. It can take me a week or two to get through a whole tournament but I find it works for me... just have to avoid spoilers is all.
I agree, I am in the same situation. What I'd like to see is more different formats like, for example, the recent Oktoberfest tourney, where decks are made from a limited pool of cards, from opened packs. A WILD tournament would be great I think.
Exactly this. I play a lot of HS and watch a lot on Twitch. I would love to follow HCT but its such an effort to know when its on. The only time I catch it is when I happen to login into Twitch and it is at the top of the HS list or if a streamer I'm watching happens to mention it.
Chanman's idea of advertising it in client is perfect. Even watching it in client would be so easy. Why don't they do this and other innovative ideas? Because they are obsessed with keeping the UI clean and ultra simple user experience over anything else. I can't see any real innovation with this current mindset.
This hits the nail! This could have been written by me. I enjoy watching tournaments, but it is way too much work figuring out how to watch them. Especially when you forget or don't have time to view them live.
Blizzard could easily put the tourney links and twitch links into their battle.net app or even update the shitty basic hearthstone menu and add a section for events or upcoming. Personally I feel as though the whole game graphics design needs to be updated to look sleeker.
Hey Builder_Bob,
Saw your post and was wondering if this youtube channel we are putting content on hits close to what you were describing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHefPX5Cgrc
Reading your post, this is the exact same frustration that I experienced as I watched all of the various esports on twitch. I wanted there to be 1 central hub where all the news could be compiled in an aesthetically pleasing format. And so that's why we created ESEB. As of right now, we know it's not nearly as optimal as it has the potential to be.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks!
Good to see Noxious once in a while. Although I like Jackie and Allies positivity,it seems those three(+Chanman) are often just complimenting each other, nodding their heads to the same stuff, and sometimes even repeating what someone else said before. Good to see some guests here and there.
can someone explain why noxious put cobalt scalebanes in his rogue deck? cos none of them asked him about that
thanku :D
Priest is very Popular and scalebane will not die to Dragonfire Potion
I just listen to the podcast version. Rarely do they discuss anything that requires visuals alongside their commentary.
I have watched some matches on youtube ... its been ok
Drama what drama?
So go watch a film then? Nobody's forcing you to watch/listen to a podcast if it doesn't interest you.
I never watched any of these before but details on the HCT drama sounds super juicy. They go at a painfully slow pace but I usually play HS with videos and other things in the background anyway. This fits as one of those background things pretty well
But you can spare a few of your precious moments to put down people that are making free content for the community. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Move on. You don't have to visit this thread every week to insult people that are putting themselves out there and making a show that a lot of other people enjoy.
