Quote from Hamilton Chu

Game Content

  •  New premium content will be added to the game which will not effect game balance. This includes:
    • New Heroes (Varian instead of Garrosh)
    • New Card Backs (Separate from the ones rewarded for ranked season play)
    • New Game Boards
  • Non-Warcraft themed elements will not be added to Hearthstone.
  • Achievements will eventually be added to the game.
  • Adventure modes will contain new quests, new game stages, and contain between 10 and 20 new cards.
    • The first adventure mode will be launched after the game releases on PC And iPad.
  • More rewards are planned for the ranked ladder.
  • The first planned expansion back will contain between 100 and 200 new cards.
  • Death Knights and Monks are not being currently worked on.

Features

  • The team is currently not working on a 2v2 mode. 1v1 needs to be solid first.
  • Observer mode is still on the list of things to do, but it is not being actively worked on.
  • The team is keeping an eye on the length of seasons, but are not considering adjusting the duration of them yet.

I think that a lot of people forget that this is a card game, no an mmo like World of Warcraft, or an RTS like Starcraft 2. Card games work much differently in the aspect of adding new cards, modifying old ones, or simply banning/deleting them all together. I've been playing the Pokemon TCG for awhile now, and my friends have been playing Yu-Gi-Oh for years, and the one thing I've noticed is that about every 6-8 months they release a new "deck", or 100-200 new cards. Some of these are just reprints of old cards, with the same hp, atk, abilities, etc, while others are entirely new cards bringing something new to the table, or simply working well with other cards. This, however, forces older cards to sometimes be unplayable, whether or no their stats don't match up with the new medium, or their abilities are no longer functional or even fair toward the new set of cards, thus they normally get banned. You can still play with them against your friends for fun or if you're just a casual player. But if you play in ranked or the tournament scene, you won't be able to use them. This makes some decks broken or unbalanced, which is why the cards are deemed unusable. I say all this because people seen to be worried about balance issues and what not when it comes to new cards coming out, but I'm sure they'll have beta testing for the new wave of cards coming out before they just release it to the public. Some people may not like the changes while others will benefit from it, but its all a part of playing the game.

On a side note, I really hope they release new hero choices for the playable decks now. Of course it doesn't make a real difference in the end, but it would ass a nice, unique feel when playing that game, especially with new player mats to boot!

It's only when this one has gotten old with no new changes for months.

Have you never played other card games? MTG has been doing this since 1993.

This is a good thing I'm sure, it will really free up standard generic builds and make the game way more interesting.  I'm just scared that too many cards released at once, may combo too well with pre-existing cards and cause games to  end even faster.   But I don't want to speculate anything before it even comes out.  And, no this is my first card game I ever got in to majorly.

It's not about getting games to end faster, it's about giving players more options to do newer things with their deck. With the amount of cards out now, it kind of condenses everything to 1-2 strategies per class (Unless you own every legendary card), so having more cards means you're at least able to mix things up and keep people guessing, rather than knowing EXACTLY what's in your opponents hand since almost everyone plays the same way.

In that case, we need way more secrets for each class.  People always know if I put down a secret as hunter, it's most likely explosive trap.

Trinica1, you're afraid of new cards in a card game? :S

And raids?! Can you describe that idea in more detail? Can't fathom what you have in mind, so guessing you're just trying to joke? :/

    #14 Trinica1 (Beta Patch 4482)

I'm afraid of THAT number of cards, yes.  To suddenly introduce 100-200 cards is very difficult to do and balance properly and quite honestly it's a concept pretty much as terrifying as a new WoW expansion (Burning Crusade was awesome, WoTLK made me quit the game it was so bad, Cataclysm looked cool though I didn't play it, then they release Kung Fu Panda.  No thanks).

I'm not sure how you've missed the posts on raids unless you're new around here, look back at some of Hearthpwn's articles and check it out.  Basically 2-4 players against a boss and you might have specialty cards you can use against that boss that are not otherwise available.  That's the form I would enjoy.

I don't know if that many people care about 2v2 or 3v3 in Hearthstone - what they WOULD care about is a raid, as has been mentioned numerous times.  I stopped playing in WoTLK so I couldn't care less about DKs or monks.  Achievements are whatever in a game like this.  I will say that I'm excited for Adventures, but I really think that raids need to be released alongside them or very shortly thereafter.  I'm a little disappointed about observer mode not being worked on at the moment, but these crazy bugs certainly have to go first.  Expansions sort of scare me a little bit - 100-200 additional cards is going to mess with the game a LOT.  As we've seen with WoW, that can be a VERY bad thing.  I guess we'll have to wait and see how it goes with Hearthstone, but I'm not going to be very excited for them and I hope it's a while before they're released.

Aye, like the adventure mode idea as well.

As for the 2v2 it has worked fine in MTG as a casual just for fun aspect for years. Same goes for a lot of the other formats (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic:_The_Gathering_formats) which add a huge social and fun aspect to the game as a whole, although they've never really been balanced enough to use for more serious competitions.

There are other sides to a game though, Zero - and more casual minded players than you'd think in most games.

Working balance down the road is a horrible idea, both from a design and from a metagame standpoint. It's not just harder to do, it's flat out impossible to have good 1v1 and 2v2 balance (SC2 says hi), let alone set the actual rules of how much can you influence your allies/enemies cards/board, who plays first, who gets the coin. Too many variables... It would be a pointless, gimmicky mode, for so few of the playerbase to actually enjoy and a ton of them complain about how "unbalanced" things are.

Great news either way... I like the adventure mode idea.

The game needs things like 2v2 (Two-Headed Giant) so much, the balance can always be worked on down the road :/

Yeah dont want to worry about game balance... best work on something that requires a new interface, new queue system, communication system and altering of every card to make sure they work in a 2 headed giant scenario... thats what the game needs...

    OT.
Confirmation that hearthstone will not go down the road of Heroes of the Storm is a great to hear.
No new classes (probably) in the next expansion is a little disappointing but understandable.
Premium content in a Free-to-play game is not surprising, we can only hope for gold alternatives.
    The rest is repeated news.

I didn't say it needed it right now. My comment was referring to the balance of 2v2 being adjusted along the way instead of trying to have it perfect when it launches, which always proves more or less impossible anyway. It needs testing, just as 1v1 has gotten now during beta.

And no, the 2HG doesn't have to be a competitive format as such (not from the very beginning anyway), as it'll be almost infeasible to perfectly balance both 1v1 and 2v2 in the same game, as Zero_PS mentions as well. I was purely referring to it as a need for the casual gamers, who're looking for more social and fun aspects. The casual players often make up for as high as 80-95% of the player base, which is probably why they're already now planning for things like 2v2 in the first place. But no, it doesn't need alteration of every single card to implement 2v2.

I absolutely do think they should "finish" and have a rock solid 1v1 first. Seemingly they're quite close to being satisfied though, as we haven't seen that many changes over the last couple of months.
