Ben Brode: Purify Will Not Appear in Arena
Ben Brode has clarified that Purify will not be appearing in Arena in the latest episode of Hearthstone Designer Insights. We've recapped below!
- The card was not intended to be powerful.
- Internally they tried Silence any minion but they're trying to cut back on Silence to see what the game feels like without it.
- Purify was 1-mana at one point but was changed due to play testers using it just to cycle through cards.
- Ben acknowledges they messed up with the timing on Purify with the community's current views on the Priest class.
- Purify is good for the game, but maybe better in a set with flashy, exciting Priest cards.
- Ben has hopes for Dragon Priest.
- Purify will not show up in Arena. This is due to them not having a system in place where they can balance card appearances individually but do have one which can remove cards completely from the draft. "It won't solve Arena balance but it's a step in the right direction".
Am very happy that it's removed from Arena but at the same time there still trying to keep the card. Take it behind the barn and put a bullet in it.
Stop clinging unto the failure.
You guys have a couple days to brain storm and replace this card, if they did i think the community would respond in a massive way in which this game has never seen before it's a absolute stellar opportunity for redemption and respect that shouldn't be wasted.
I mean, it's hard to explain without just repeating Ben Brode--but they don't design everything for competitive decks. If "not competitive" is the same thing as "not good" for you, then it's obvious that this card wasn't designed for you.
I know--from my own experiences--that most of my favorite experiences with Priest have been doing really absurdly out-of-the-box stuff, whether through Mindgames, Thoughtsteal, Mind Vision, Shadow Madness, and so on. Priest has almost always relied on combos and manipulative effects in order to pull off their biggest stuff. In that sense, Purify fits. It doesn't fit Ranked, and it doesn't fit Legend decks, but it fits the mold of a card that creative deckbuilders can tinker with, experiment with, and attempt some bonkers crap with.
That's often why I play, and--from what I can tell--why a lot of other experimental players play. Maybe it's not why you play. But that's okay. It takes all kinds.
I agree, the problem with priest is that it's currently overrrun and trampled by current meta and has no time to pull it's tricks.
The problem is that they put too many cards of this kind in the same class. It's quite easy to understand that priest is one of the hardest class to play because each turn, you have lots of options (except for the first ones where you just sit and watch your enemy building his board).
Personally, I think we deserve an apology for that asinine response we got from Iksar. While this response from Ben Brode wasn't perfect, at least it accomplished something. Meanwhile, Iksar's response got nothing good done, and did more harm than good. I don't know about Iksar's track record, but come on. did nobody check to see what he'd say and think, "hmm, this might actually piss off a lot of the community. Seems good to me!"
So priest will get one less card offered in Arena … YAAAAY! Wait, what?
So what Blizzard is trying to say that their "exiting new card" they added and that everybody in the dev team is so "exited to play with" (yesterday) is absolute shit and only made it into the game because they could not come up with something better? I'm really not sure if I should now be happy or even more pissed about that.
I think the hearthstone team just missed the wailing soul priest
Shame it came now though
if they were trying to push silence priest and purify was a 1 mana card then why did it end-up being 2 mana?
Actually he doesn't admit that anywhere. He just says it wasn't supposed to be good but it is still good for the game. That sounds halfassed and is actually a pathetic display. His Ego is too big for him to admit the error in their ways.
Oh sure, let's just pull an entirely new, ARCHETYPE-DEFINING card out of our asses. Hey, this minion some dude posted looks good! Let's just get that card coded, voice-acted, and implemented into the expansion, despite the fact that we already have a fully operational card that we can use.
Seriously? Purify is here, and it's staying. Get over it. I wish priests had gotten something better too, but expecting them to completely remove the card and design something ARCHETYPE-DEFINING from the ground up is the epitome of unreasonable. And don't give me this "You must act" nonsense. The measures they are taking for arena with Purify IS action, to minimize the damage Purify would do to Priests Arena win-rates. It's the most Blizzard can do right now, and from the sounds of it they will do more in future.
Be freaking patient. Jesus.
Let's help Mages a little bit
Rename Anduin Wrynn already. Call him Amdoin' Wrong from now on.
Props to Ben Brode for being a man and giving a sincere and respectful response which was miles ahead of the load of dog shit Iksar said earlier in the day. The next expansion really needs to keep Arena balance in mind i checked my statistics and i only play against Priest 3% of the time since Old Gods, having Purify in draft would have been a death sentence to a class already on life support am glad this decision was made its a step in the right direction.
This card is a waste of digital paper...
Yes, it will not be seen in arena!! Now we just need it to not be playable in constructed either, and have them make a actual card...
Like wth, i look around on just this site i can find A LOT of good and interesting priest card ideas, but no - we want purify. ._.
Yea great and you know what Brode, while we are at it shouldn't appear in constructed either. You know what should be printed instead for that slot? A real fucking card.
Sorry, but this video is again pure bullshit. If they really want to do something, removing this card from Arena is a good step, but what would have been better: Remove and replace this card and creating another one and adding this card in an later expansion. They could twist the rewards a bit, and implement it even after the release of karazhan; they have 5 weeks to create 1 card. Since it takes 1 month to implement the game to all platforms, they would have at least 1 week time; and i think that creating 1 card in 1 week should be possible.
Instead they screwed up really hard and they knew it that priest was at the bottom of the barrel; giving priest more shit does not help them; but they have done it anyway because ben brode still belive in the non-existent unicorn priest.
Purify is the saddest excuse of an card but they still implement it. And now they do damage control because they knew they heavily screwed up.
And they give us absolute NO SOLUTION. They sit on their hands hand pray that priest might come up somehow the meta. Will not happen naturally.
Sorry, but you're being WAY too entitled dude. Removed and replace the card? Do you have any idea how hard it would be to implement a card in its place? They have to code the card and its interactions; they have to generate artwork for it, which means card art AND spell effects; if it's a minion they have to do voice recording; they have to implement it into the adventure both as a reward and as part of any class challenge decks that it would be featured in, and so much freaking more that we could probably never assume outright. All this stuff that, mind you, they have ALREADY DONE with Purify. It's not just a matter of "Here's a week. Make a new card." They HAVE a card, fully functional, everything lined up now. And you're saying they should scrap all that just because it's a shitty card?
Why the hell should they do something so freaking drastic anyway? Blizzard has always printed bad cards. The Majordomos, the Duskboars, the Magma Ragers. They make these cards because not every player is ALWAYS focused on ALWAYS winning ALWAYS. Sometimes they just wanna have fun using a combo of cards. The only reason why this card is taking so much crap is because of the timing of it. If it were alongside a bunch of other cards in expansion, people wouldn't be pitching as nearly a fit about it. And they FREAKING ACKNOWLEDGED THIS. They straight up said, "We screwed up. If we gauged the commodity's opinion of Priest better, we would have put together a different card instead. That is our fault." And you're saying that's bullshit? Whatever man. You call it damage control, but I'll take an admittance of a mistake over people's whiny entitlement any day.
Yeah, Purify sucks. But it's here, to stay, and at the very least Blizz is trying to minimize the damage it would do to arena priests.
Suck it up.
It's good that the devs actually feel they have to do damage control for purify. Even if they do not completely fix priest in the next expansion, they have at least publicly acknowledged that they are aware the community is unsatisfied with the class. Baby steps are all you can really hope for with this clueless dev team.
"We don't want more silence effects because we think the game might be better off without it" -Ben Brode
Then why the hell did you make a new silence card? These guys are really that lazy that they'd rather intentionally sabotage a silence card than have to come up with a legitimate new card with a different effect. Unreal.
