Ben Brode on Druid Basic Cards, Balancing, New Heroes
Shacknews and PC Gamer had a chance to speak with Ben Brode about the new formats, balance, and new heroes. Check out our recap below.
Quote from Ben Brode
- No plans on buffing any cards during the balance pass.
- The number of card changes will be more than 2 cards but less than 20.
- They're looking at Druid basic cards as Druids use more basic cards than any other class.
- Ideally they will change as little as possible with the nerfs so old cards stay recognizable.
- The bulk of balance efforts will be dedicated to Standard.
- Wild balance will likely be reactive.
- They will still take a conservative approach to balance.
- Wild will "have interesting new combinations of cards that should be pretty fun and more powerful than baseline Hearthstone feels right now".
- New heroes have not been given up on - they just haven't made any new ones yet.
- Ben thinks we'll "hear about new heroes in the not-too-distant future".
- They're aware of what tools we'll lose when sets drop from standard and can plan accordingly to give us new tools that we want.
- They were "very wrong" about Undertaker back in the day.
- They've been talking internally about how they can make dailies better - it's been a while since they've touched it.
Top 10 Regret Cards from Naxx & GvG
Noxious posted a video on his favourite cards that never really saw the light of day from Naxxramas and Goblins vs Gnomes.
What lesser played cards will you be missing from these expansions?

Druids got a big hit with the nef bat...still playable nontheless
Keep up the good work, Hearthpwn!
LOL! How were they very wrong about Undertaker? That was a needed change, hell I even used it excessively because it was great card for rush hunter decks.
They mean they were wrong about its initial version. That's why they nerfed it.
Yup, and 1 year later:
I find it odd that they said "less than 20" because I was expecting like 5 card changes at most but they appear to be implying that there will be more than 10...We'll see, this is Blizzard after all, I wouldn't be surprised if it was only 3 cards.
Good thing that cards like Dalaran Mage, Totemic Might and Silverback Patriarch stay the same useless cards they always were Kappa
Hey! They fixed a powercreep of Gnomeregan Infantry at least... by remowing a whole set.
Boy I can't wait til the next year when same will happen to everpresent Evil Heckler and Ice Rager!
Yes! New Heroes! Shut up and take my money!
New heroes? Does that mean Death knight, monk, and Demon Hunter?
Fuck that shit then.
Unless they nerf some aggro cards, which is perfectly possible.
As if they'd do that. They don't want to upset the aggro players i.e 80% of the playerbase.
A few days before Half-Life 3 is announced
Doesn't not buffing classic and basic cards cards kind of make sense if they're trying to avoid power creep?
No, it doesn't. Cards that are currently bad (like Magma Rager) should be made less bad, and not merely replaced with strictly better paid cards. Making Magma Rager a 5/2 is not power creep, it's correcting a stupid design decision to make a card incredibly underpowered.
I greatly appreciate Ben Brode and Team 5 doing so much to help the playerbase! Thanks, guys!
