Ben Brode Dev Interview - RNG, ESports, Secretadin
Ben Brode sat down with Tim Clark of PC Gamer for an interview to talk about TGT, RNG, Esports, and more. We've recapped the important parts of the interview below, if you'd like to read the entire transcript head on over to PC Gamer.
Quote from Ben Brode
- Deck slots are officially on the to-do list. They want to do the best implementation possible - not the first thing that comes to mind.
- Not all Inspire cards were targeted for tier 1 decks.
- Had they of buffed some of the "bad" Paladin secrets, Mysterious Challenger may not have been able to be what it is today.
- Secret paladin isn't very concerning as it doesn't kill you in one turn - you see it coming.
- They aren't in love with Grim Patron gameplay but not only is it not being played much on the ladder, but it is a difficult deck to play correctly and the win rates aren't at the point of cards they've nerfed in the past.
- Power level reasons aren't why they nerf things, it's all about how fun cards are to play against.
- Poisoned Blade's intention was to bring back the original Rogue hero power in a more balanced form. It does seem less good if you didn't get to play with it during Hearthstone's beta.
- Dragons are in an awesome place right now.
Internal Stats
Ben talked about some of the internal stats they keep track of.
- Class breakdowns of grouping of cards.
- Individual card win rates.
- Groups of cards win rates.
- Individual players and their win rates of individual decks.
Strength in Numbers - Weekly Card Design Competition
This week's card design competition, Strength in Numbers, is now live! The entry theme this week is to design a card which has an effect that depends on the number of minions on the battlefield, such as Sea Giant or Frostwolf Warlord. It gets a little bit more complicated though, more details on which can be found in the submission thread.
So what are you waiting for? Winners get bragging rights and a fancy avatar border, so go submit your entry today! If you'd like to discuss this week's entries, you can do so as always in the discussion thread. Good luck!
Hearthstone Probability Guide
TheAnimaker has put together quite the thread which discusses probability in Hearthstone over on the forums. The thread details card reliability by turn, odds of getting that mulligan you wanted, individual card outcomes, and more! Go check it out, and leave a comment!
Yes, the game definitely needed more casual/arena/brawl-related stuff for people who just want to play some games for "fun".
And current ladder system is not so good. I feel it resets too much, high level players forced to start every month for low ranks, which comes to not-challenging matches for them and unfair matches for their opponents. Other words, more separation by player level would be nice.
It exists in some form of hidden MMR in game. If you concede 10-15 games in your casual mode, I believe, you will find some opponents with custom-made fun decks (ofc, these decks are terrible and non-competitive, but you can't have everything, right?).
But nerfing cards has no sense (except it's game breaking or produce one dominant play strategy, which is wrong for current state), because with nerf one decks other decks will became stronger and OP, and people will start to whine again about new decks, and so on, and so on.
So after a year and a half they're finally listening to the community and working on deck slots.
Hey, maybe we should all complain about Brode and in a year and a half they will can him and there might be a chance of saving this game.
if you hate secret paladins that much then put cards in your deck to counter them. there are many!
you know what they are going to do. like he said, you know what's coming. it's not like you can't plan for it just as much as you can for any deck.
Adding a bunch of tech cards to strengthen your odds against one deck and weakening your other matchups isn't the solution at all lol.
If they still think it's confusing to new players to have too many deckslots, then here's what you do: player progression unlocks more. Say, getting to level 25 with a class unlocks one extra slot; for a total of 9 more slots.
Agree, Dr.Boom boombots, Warsong Commanders and Mysterious Challenger must be nerfed!
Is it me or does he give pointless excuses about Poisoned Blade and nerfing cards?
Well, at least he said that they will implement more card slots (finally)!
Hope additional deck slots will be implemented soon!
sure they will.
only 9.99$ per slot
Hey now.... a bundle of three slots is $25.
I think he actually said they take both into consideration.
The way this is written makes it hard to believe that Ben Brode actually plays Hearthstone Ladder =/
So they nerfed based on how fun it is to play against but they wont nerf patron cause its not that popular or powerful even tho they know its not fun to play against?
so which one is it then? Brode once again has no idea what he is talking about?
so its my fault now that Poisoned Blade is bad cause i didnt get to play early beta? thats nice to know. wondering how many more cards are bad cause of me and not cause there are better replacements.
So basically, they know patron warrior is frustrating and not fun to play against, but they aren't gonna nerf it 'cause it's not that powerful, and the very next line they say that they don't nerf cards because they are too powerful but because they are not fun to play against.. Did i miss a line somewhere?
Deck slots *_* CDC entries are good too.
Q: Why Poisoned Blade suck?
A:Because you didn't play Hearthstone from beta.
RNG = skill Kappa
