Ben Brode Dev Interview - RNG, ESports, Secretadin
Ben Brode sat down with Tim Clark of PC Gamer for an interview to talk about TGT, RNG, Esports, and more. We've recapped the important parts of the interview below, if you'd like to read the entire transcript head on over to PC Gamer.
Quote from Ben Brode
- Deck slots are officially on the to-do list. They want to do the best implementation possible - not the first thing that comes to mind.
- Not all Inspire cards were targeted for tier 1 decks.
- Had they of buffed some of the "bad" Paladin secrets, Mysterious Challenger may not have been able to be what it is today.
- Secret paladin isn't very concerning as it doesn't kill you in one turn - you see it coming.
- They aren't in love with Grim Patron gameplay but not only is it not being played much on the ladder, but it is a difficult deck to play correctly and the win rates aren't at the point of cards they've nerfed in the past.
- Power level reasons aren't why they nerf things, it's all about how fun cards are to play against.
- Poisoned Blade's intention was to bring back the original Rogue hero power in a more balanced form. It does seem less good if you didn't get to play with it during Hearthstone's beta.
- Dragons are in an awesome place right now.
Internal Stats
Ben talked about some of the internal stats they keep track of.
- Class breakdowns of grouping of cards.
- Individual card win rates.
- Groups of cards win rates.
- Individual players and their win rates of individual decks.
Strength in Numbers - Weekly Card Design Competition
This week's card design competition, Strength in Numbers, is now live! The entry theme this week is to design a card which has an effect that depends on the number of minions on the battlefield, such as Sea Giant or Frostwolf Warlord. It gets a little bit more complicated though, more details on which can be found in the submission thread.
So what are you waiting for? Winners get bragging rights and a fancy avatar border, so go submit your entry today! If you'd like to discuss this week's entries, you can do so as always in the discussion thread. Good luck!
Hearthstone Probability Guide
TheAnimaker has put together quite the thread which discusses probability in Hearthstone over on the forums. The thread details card reliability by turn, odds of getting that mulligan you wanted, individual card outcomes, and more! Go check it out, and leave a comment!
Power level reasons aren't why they nerf things, it's all about how fun cards are to play against.
Grim Patron isn't fun to play against they OTK you
Ben Brode is funny sometimes, but from what I'm reading in this article he's not very bright when it comes to balancing Hearthstone.
rofl, just ROFL!
He's kind of right about dragons, but he is still my favorite comedian.
brode is quickly losing the faith and respect of the community with all this double talk.
expecting deck slots for 1000 gold each, or 19.99 for 9 more slots.
They will be golden deck slots as well.
These quotes disgust me
"Power level reasons aren't why they nerf things, it's all about how fun cards are to play against"
Gets me every time.
MORE DECK SLOTS YAY!
DECK SLOTS FOR 10$ EACH! Ya... y... Well...
Yes, yes he can. It is called RNG and good cards. You might find that whining about something unrelated to the topic will illicit similar responses from people also sick of your moaning about something that is a non-issue for the vast majority of players. Or are you one of these players who is convinced that if Dr. Boom was never made life would be fine in Hearthstone and you would be Legend every season?
Okay the first one is hilarious! I'm laughing now even without seeing it (e.g. Knife juggler kills savjz in a board full of patrons)
The second is actually annoying...
Either way, I can see BB laughing from his chair when this kind of RNG happens :P
More like just plain lying and backtracking...
per deck :D
Poisoned Blade.
No matter what you said or will say, I'll never get the point of this card.
Ikr? I think it could actually work if it said "Your hero power gives this weapon +1/+1 instead of replacing it", then it would be a viable card... I suppose. I can see it working on "4fun" decks, but on ladder, would still be a mystery
Apparently this card is "Balanced"....
I always thought that balance as a definition of a middle ground between overpowered and crap. This card is nothing more then plain crap and is an insult to logical card costing.
Heck it is an insult to the game designers intelligence.
4 mana for a weapon not worthy or being worth more then 1 mana HOW??? It literally blows my mind how they take a card then add 3 extra mana then what it should cost and then call it balanced.
Balanced is a bad word in this game. You don't want to be balanced. You want to be overpowered. It's the only way to compete with Mysterious Challenger, Patrons, and that efficient aggression.
:Power level reasons aren't why they nerf things, it's all about how fun cards are to play against.""
So the Boom Bots are super fun to play against, right Ben?
Just admit your mistake and stop keeping the card around so people may buy a few more GvG packs...
Sigh... Ben Brode is either stupid so he doesn't have any idea about the game, or is in denial of the problems within the game, especially RNG. He doesn't look stupid, so one has to guess he is deliberately refusing to confront and address the problems properly. Enough of those petty excuses. He really should stop being so lazy/cocky and face the reality.
Making changes to a huge program isnt that easy you know, your way of thinking is what causes broken games and bugs =P
Especially when any change has to go trough many levels of acceptance inside the company...
